Nembhard scores 21, Florida handles Alabama 71-53
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — Andrew Nembhard couldn't miss and for a while Alabama couldn't hit.
Florida's freshman star Nembhard scored a career-high 21 points without missing a shot and the Gators pounded the Crimson Tide 71-53 on Saturday in easily their most lopsided road win of the year.
The Gators (14-11, 6-6 Southeastern Conference) held the Tide (15-10, 6-6) without a field goal for nearly eight minutes to start the game.
Johnson has 15 points as Florida beats Vanderbilt 66-57
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Through an inconsistent season, Florida coach Mike White has been searching for his team to make winning plays down the stretch.
Freshman guard Keyontae Johnson and the rest of the Gators delivered against reeling Vanderbilt.
Johnson had 15 points, nine rebounds and came up with a big steal in the closing minutes, lifting Florida to a 66-57 win over Vanderbilt on Wednesday night.
Allen steps up late, helps Florida beat Ole Miss 90-86 in OT
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Despite missing his first six 3-pointers, KeVaughn Allen remained confident.
He even wanted the ball in crunch time.
Allen hit a 3-pointer to send the game into overtime and added two huge baskets in the extra frame to help Florida beat Mississippi 90-86 on Wednesday night.
Allen, Locke carry Florida to 81-72 win against Texas A&M
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — With the shot clock winding down and the lead dwindling, KeVaughn Allen took his longest 3-pointer of the night.
And he banked it in, a big shot that gave Florida a seven-point lead with 2:59 to play and left Allen with a huge grin as he backpedaled toward midcourt.
It was that kind of night for Allen and the Gators.
Florida forward Stone out for season with torn knee ligament
GAINESVILE, Fla. (AP) — Florida forward Keith Stone will have season-ending surgery after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee at Georgia.
The Gators announced the news Sunday, one day after their 62-52 victory in Athens and after Stone underwent further testing.
Florida hopes to avoid more clock-watching in crunch time
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Florida coach Mike White said he has a team of "clock-watchers," guys seemingly content to coast through the final minutes of games and hope to win.
It's the only way he can explain how the Gators have struggled down the stretch in Southeastern Conference play.
Florida (9-7, 1-3) has done little right in the closing minutes of league play, leading to the program's worst conference start since 1996.
Florida’s Mike White searches for answers amid slow start
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Florida coach Mike White has three guys he can count on to bring energy and effort every day. Problem is two of them are freshmen.
Although that might bode well for the future of the program, it's not how the Gators were expected to play in White's fourth season. So the coach is scratching his head and searching for answers as Florida (8-5, 0-1 Southeastern Conference) prepares to play at Arkansas (10-3, 1-0) on Wednesday night.
Silva’s late dunk lifts South Carolina over Florida 71-69
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — A precision pass the length of the court. A grown-man seal against two defenders. A dunk that stunned the home crowd and sent the South Carolina bench into a frenzy.
It was a final play executed to perfection.
Chris Silva's slam following a full-court pass from Felipe Haase with 2.5 seconds remaining gave South Carolina a 71-69 victory over Florida in the Southeastern Conference opener for both teams Saturday night.
Florida opens with 21-0 run, thumps Butler 77-43 in rematch
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Not even Florida coach Mike White, who tends to be negative and nit-picky after victories, had anything bad to say about this one.
The Gators scored the first 21 points, delivering one of the most complete stretches of basketball in White's four seasons, and handled Butler 77-43 Saturday.
It was Butler's worst loss since a 40-point setback (104-64) at North Carolina on Jan. 24, 1994.
Locke ties career high with 18, Florida beats Mercer 71-63
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Florida coach Mike White admittedly wore his guys out during a 10-day break for final exams.
It nearly cost the Gators against Mercer.
Noah Locke scored 18 points, tying his career high, and Florida staved off a late rally to beat the Bears 71-63 on Tuesday night.
Florida outlasts West Virginia in Jimmy V Classic, 66-56
NEW YORK (AP) — After earning what coach Mike White called the "biggest win thus far in a very early season," Florida is reveling.
The Gators knocked off West Virginia, 66-56, in the second game of the Jimmy V Classic Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden.
KeVaughn Allen scored a game-high 19 points to lead Florida, and while he was the only Gator to reach double-figure scoring, it was enough. Florida won its third game in its last five starts and improved to 5-3.
Locke scores career-high 18, Florida beats UNF 98-66
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Florida is finding points and energy from a couple unexpected sources.
Noah Locke scored a career-high 18 points, Deaundrae Ballard added 15 and the Gators handled North Florida 98-66 Tuesday night.
Locke, a freshman from Maryland, has worked his way into the starting lineup in place of senior Jalen Hudson and emerged as a reliable scorer for the Gators (4-3).
"No one on our team plays any harder than Noah," Florida coach Mike White said.
Gators earn their 2nd straight win, stop La Salle 82-69
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Florida showed it could make up for an off shooting night with some inside scoring production on Wednesday night against La Salle.
Kevarrius Hayes scored seven of his 12 points during a key 11-0 second half run as the Gators pulled away to beat La Salle 82-69.
Florida (2-1) shot just 23.1 percent (3-13) from 3-point range, but made up for it by outscoring La Salle 46-32 in the paint. Hayes went 5 for 5 from the floor, while Isaiah Stokes added nine points off the bench.
Eagles right tackle Lane Johnson out with knee injury
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Right tackle Lane Johnson is inactive for the Eagles against Dallas on Sunday night.
Johnson, an All-Pro last season, has a strained medial collateral ligament in his left knee. Halapoulivaati Vaitai will take his place in the lineup.
Starting cornerback Jalen Mills has a foot injury and was already ruled out.
Linebacker Sean Lee is among several injured players sitting out for the Cowboys. Lee has a hamstring injury and is expected to miss several games.
Savoy helps No. 17 Florida State beat Florida 81-60
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Florida State reached the Elite Eight in March with a tenacious defense. The Seminoles opened the season with more of the same, frustrating their in-state rival from the opening tip.
P.J. Savoy scored 20 points with five 3-pointers, Trent Forrest added 13 points and five assists, and No. 17 Florida State opened with an 81-60 win over Florida on Tuesday night.
Florida turns to freshman guard Nembhard to replace Chiozza
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Florida coach Mike White already considers Andrew Nembhard one of the best passers in college basketball, extremely high praise for a freshman.
It might be warranted.
The 6-foot-5 point guard led his high school team, Montverde Academy in nearby Orlando, to a national championship and carried Canada to a silver medal at the FIBA U18 Americas.
Last season: 21-13, losing in second round of NCAA Tournament.
Coach: Mike White.
Who's gone: Point guard Chris Chiozza, swingman Egor Koulechov, center John Egbunu.
Houston RB Miller, WRs Fuller, Coutee active against Cowboys
HOUSTON (AP) — Houston Texans running back Lamar Miller and receivers Will Fuller and Keke Coutee are all active against the Dallas Cowboys despite dealing with injuries.
Miller dealt with a chest injury this week and Fuller and Coutee had hamstring injuries. Cornerback Aaron Colvin and linebacker Brian Peters are out on Sunday night with ankle injuries.
Texas hires Oregon softball coach Mike White
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — The University of Texas hired Oregon softball coach Mike White on Monday to lead a program that has been a steady presence in the postseason without becoming a powerhouse.
In White, the Longhorns get a coach who led the Ducks to five Women's College World Series in nine seasons, and earned the overall No. 1 seed this past season before being eliminated by eventual national champion Florida State. White's Oregon teams won at least 50 games five times.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Florida guard Jalen Hudson, the team's leading scorer last season, will return to school for his senior year.
Coach Mike White says the 22-year-old Hudson delivered the news Tuesday after talking with his family.
Hudson declared for the NBA draft in late March, but didn't hire an agent and left open the possibility of staying in school. Hudson wasn't invited to the NBA Combine and was told he wouldn't get drafted.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — If there are constructive losses, perhaps Oregon's came in the opener of its NCAA Super Regional series against Kentucky.
The top-seeded Ducks dropped Game 1 of the series against the No. 16 Wildcats but rebounded to win the next two to secure a trip to Oklahoma City for this week's Women's College World Series.
Oregon coach Mike White called the loss a "gut check." It certainly put the Ducks on notice.
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Less than a month after being named associate head coach at Florida, Armon Gates was introduced Monday as an assistant on Tim Miles' staff at Nebraska.
"It was a big-time whirlwind for me," Gates said at a news conference.
EUGENE — If Thursday’s top-five battle between Oregon and Oklahoma was any indication of how the Ducks stack up nationally this season, it’s about to a very entertaining, and lengthy, spring.
Softball fans will be treated to dessert before the main course this weekend at Jane Sanders Stadium.
No. 4 Oregon, coming off series wins over then-No. 9 Arizona and then-No. 7 Arizona State, hosts No. 2 Oklahoma in a marquee nonconference matchup on Thursday (4 p.m., Pac-12 Networks).
After playing the two-time defending NCAA champion Sooners (39-2, 12-0 Big 12), the Ducks (34-7, 9-3 Pac-12) will host Stanford for a three-game series beginning Friday.
Florida’s rebuild would get tougher without Jalen Hudson
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Florida coach Mike White has a rebuilding project ahead, and he's not quite sure how significant an undertaking it will be.
White is waiting to see what happens with leading scorer Jalen Hudson, who declared for the NBA draft late last month but left open the possibility of returning to school for his senior season.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Florida has hired Northwestern assistant Armon Gates as associate men's basketball head coach.
Gates fills the position created when Dusty May left Gainesville to become Florida Atlantic's head coach.
Gators coach Mike White calls Gates "my ultimate target," adding that he's a proven recruiter who brings an "infectious energy" and a winning pedigree.
CORVALLIS — Megan Kleist didn’t see the most critical swing in recent Civil War softball history.
“I wasn’t watching, to be honest,” Oregon’s ace admitted. “I was closing my eyes, I was scared. But I heard the sound, and I had to open them and run. It was a great feeling.”
FAU hires Dusty May as its new men’s basketball coach
BOCA RATON, Fla. (AP) — Florida Atlantic has hired Dusty May as its new basketball coach, signing him to a five-year contract.
The school announced the move Thursday. May will be introduced to the FAU community on Friday.
May has spent the last three years as an assistant at Florida under coach Mike White — the brother of new FAU athletic director Brian White.
The Ducks don’t get to ease into Pac-12 play.
No. 6 Oregon hosts No. 3 UCLA for a three-game series starting Friday at Jane Sanders Stadium (5 p.m., Pac-12 Networks).
The Ducks (23-4), who matched UCLA’s NCAA record for consecutive wins to start a season (35) last year, were the preseason favorites in the Pac-12 coaches poll.
The Bruins (24-0) are one of the nation’s two remaining unbeaten teams, along with No. 1 Washington (28-0).
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — At least Florida coach Mike White could joke about his team's predicament: Getting stranded about 900 miles from home after the Southeastern Conference Tournament because the team's chartered airplane was on a military mission.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Florida coach Mike White has a forbidden phrase for his staff, a rule implemented just a few weeks ago.
No one is allowed to say "PK80" in front of the team. Florida played well in the late-November tournament in Portland, Oregon, the Phil Knight Invitational, a 16-team tourney that celebrated the Nike co-founder's 80th birthday. The Gators vaulted to No. 5 in the AP poll.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Kentucky and Florida seem to be peaking at the perfect time.
The 23rd-ranked Wildcats are the hottest team in the Southeastern Conference, having won four in a row while averaging 87.7 points a game. The Gators, meanwhile, have consecutive victories for the first time in nearly a month thanks to the kind of effort and defensive intensity coach Mike White has been looking for all season.
The No. 6 Oregon softball team has packed its bags for its final nonconference road trip of the season.
The Ducks (12-3) — after playing in tournaments in Tempe, Ariz., Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, and Cathedral City, Calif. — are headed to Florida to play seven games in four days.
Oregon went 3-2 last week against the stacked field at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic, which included wins over No. 7 LSU and No. 18 Oklahoma State and losses to No. 6 Texas A&M and No. 11 Tennessee.
Hudson scores 27, Florida throttles Alabama 73-52
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — The Florida Gators didn't have to put on a flashy offensive performance to swat down a team that went more than 14 minutes without making a basket.
Jalen Hudson scored 27 points and Florida throttled Alabama's offense in a 73-52 victory on Tuesday night, especially during a frigid stretch of the first half.
The Gators (19-11, 10-7 Southeastern Conference) held the slumping Crimson Tide (17-13, 8-9) to 30 percent shooting.
Allen bounces back, Florida beats No. 12 Auburn 72-66
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — KeVaughn Allen finally got the message. It took a scoreless game and long chats with coach Mike White and two teammates to sink in.
Allen bounced back from his worst game in more than three years with 24 points, including a 60-footer before the halftime buzzer and two huge 3-pointers in the closing minutes as Florida beat No. 12 Auburn 72-66 on Saturday night.
Allen missed his first five shots against the Tigers before hitting six in a row.
Florida running out of time to improve NCAA tourney resume
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Florida's postseason resume is about as shaky as the team's shooting right now.
The Gators (17-11, 8-7 Southeastern Conference) have lost three in a row and six of eight in league play. Little has gone right since early January, leaving coach Mike White's team in danger of missing the NCAA Tournament for the second time in three seasons.
So what did coach Mike White have planned for the No. 3 Oregon softball team to work on during Tuesday’s practice at Jane Sanders Stadium?
“It may sound kind of ridiculous, but actually the short game,” White said. “After hitting all those bombs … we didn’t really get those bunts down when we needed some early runs. We had some base running snafus here and there.”
Hudson scores 18, Florida beats LSU 73-64 to end SEC skid
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Florida coach Mike White couldn't recall ever seeing guard Jalen Hudson play as hard.
Not in practice. Not in a game. Maybe not in his Virginia Tech days.
Hudson scored 18 points, highlighted by a crucial, three-point play with 1:15 remaining, and the Gators beat LSU 73-64 to end a three-game losing streak in Southeastern Conference play Wednesday night.
