Administrators say schools in Fargo and West Fargo will open at the usual time Thursday, but schools in Moorhead, Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton and Thief River Falls are among many starting two hours late. Temperatures dropped to minus 25 (minus 31 Celsius) Thursday morning with forecasters predicted a high of minus 2 (minus 16 Celsius).
5-year-old knocked unconscious after second-floor fall
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — Police say a 5-year-old girl was knocked unconscious after falling over a second-floor railing inside a Sioux Falls hotel.
Authorities say the girl, from Mitchell, was playing with a ball with other children in the hallway of the Ramada Inn Sunday when the ball went over the railing. Police spokesman Sam Clemens says that as the children were running after it, the girl was unable to slow down, flipped over the railing and fell to the first floor.

Manslaughter charged filed in deadly bar fight
MITCHELL, S.D. (AP) — A deadly bar fight has led to manslaughter charges against a Mitchell man.
Mitchell police say 26-year-old Dylan Thompson was involved in a fight that seriously injured a 59-year-old man on Jan. 3 at Thirsty's Bar. Thompson was originally arrested on an aggravated assault charge. That charge was amended to first-degree manslaughter after the man died on Tuesday. Police have not identified the victim.

The Highway Patrol says 52-year-old Lisa Shippy and 43-year-old Darcy Constant were killed in the crash that happened 4 miles east of Mitchell shortly after 10:30 p.m. Tuesday.
The patrol says Shippy was driving a sport utility vehicle that went in the median and rolled several times, coming to rest on its roof in a driving lane.

Police: Armed man threatens officers, woman in Mitchell
MITCHELL, S.D. (AP) — Police say they've arrested a man armed with a knife who threatened officers and a woman in Mitchell.
Authorities say the 40-year-old man entered the Department of Public Safety building Monday afternoon and threatened three police officers in the lobby and a woman who tried to calm him.
The Argus Leader says officers drew their guns, used a stun gun on the man and he was taken into custody and placed on a mental health hold in the Davison County Jail.
Dusty Johnson names congressional leadership team
MITCHELL, S.D. (AP) — Incoming U.S. Rep. Dusty Johnson has named his chief of staff and filled other leadership team roles ahead of taking office in January.
Johnson said Wednesday that his chief of staff will be Andrew Christianson, who served in that role for outgoing Rep. Kristi Noem. Johnson is replacing Noem as South Dakota's lone U.S. representative as she transitions into the governor's office.

Man accused in South Dakota of sending threatening texts
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — A California man is accused in South Dakota of sending texts to a woman threatening to hurt her and kill her family.
Twenty-two-year-old Zackary Mitchell, of Sacramento, is charged in federal court with interstate communications of threat to injure. He faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison. He has pleaded not guilty.
Authorities say the texts were sent between Dec. 23, 2017, and Jan. 14, 2018.

2 sex trafficking suspects in Mitchell area plead not guilty
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — Two men accused of sex trafficking in the Mitchell area have pleaded not guilty in federal court.
The Argus Leader reports that 57-year-old Timothy Bingham and 35-year-old Walter Jandreau are accused of trafficking a juvenile girl through the use of force.

Huron man accused of defrauding prospective game hunters
MITCHELL, S.D. (AP) — A Huron man is accused of defrauding people out of thousands of dollars they paid for guided trophy game hunts.
Mitchell police say 50-year-old Roger King accepted cash from five local residents, telling them he would take them on guided trophy hunts on the Lower Brule Indian Reservation. The amount of cash paid was about $4,000 in total.

Body found in Mitchell parking lot; no foul play suspected
MITCHELL, S.D. (AP) — Authorities do not suspect foul play in the death of a man whose body was found in the parking lot of a Mitchell apartment complex.
The Daily Republic reports that police officers conducting a welfare check Tuesday found the body on the ground between two parked cars.

As winter looms, city leaders are seeking part-time help to finish the murals adorning the city's famous Corn Palace.
"We just need some manpower, more than anything else," Mayor Bob Everson said.
The attraction bills itself as the world's only palace dedicated to the commodity. It features murals made of hundreds of thousands of ears of corn and draws about 200,000 tourists each year.
Judge refuses to suppress statements in fatal stabbing case
MITCHELL, S.D. (AP) — A judge has denied a defense request to suppress statements made to police by a Mitchell man accused of fatally stabbing another man.
Forty-nine-year-old Anthony Lewis is charged with murder in the August 2017 death of 30-year-old Quinn Schleuning during a confrontation outside of an apartment complex. He has pleaded not guilty.
