BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Auston Matthews scored his second goal with three seconds on the clock in overtime, and the Toronto Maple Leafs matched their best start in 84 years with a 4-3 victory over the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday night.
The Maple Leafs won their fifth straight game and improved to 20-8. The only other time it took them just 28 games to reach 20 wins was when they opened the 1934-35 season at 20-6-2.
Matthews, Tavares score 2 each, Maple Leafs beat Stars 7-4
DALLAS (AP) — John Tavares and the Toronto Maple Leafs are just getting used to each other.
So far, so good.
Tavares and Auston Matthews each had two goals, and the high-scoring Maple Leafs beat the Dallas Stars 7-4 on Tuesday night.
Toronto defenseman Morgan Rielly had a career-high four assists after he scored the winning goal in Sunday night's 7-6 overtime win at Chicago. Mitchell Marner had a goal and three assists as the Maple Leafs improved to 2-0 on a four-game trip.
Matthews scores as Leafs down Predators 5-2
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Auston Matthews didn't look rusty in his return from a monthlong layoff.
Matthews had a goal in his first game back from a shoulder injury that sidelined him for 10 games and the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Nashville Predators 5-2 on Thursday night.
"I felt fine out there," Matthews said. "I got engaged early, got the puck, able to make a couple of plays and that kind of builds your confidence for the rest of the game."
Rask extends success streak, Bruins beat Maple Leafs 4-1
BOSTON (AP) — Tuukka Rask watched his own defenseman redirect a Toronto player's shot into the net behind him.
The way he's been playing, he could still joke about it afterward.
Rask made 23 stops and posted a point for a career-best 20th straight game, leading the surging Boston Bruins past the Maple Leafs 4-1 on Saturday night.
Marner, van Riemsdyk lead Maple Leafs past Bruins, 4-1
BOSTON (AP) — The Toronto Maple Leafs made this a lot easier for Curtis McElhinney with a quick lead. The backup goalie took care of things from there.
McElhinney stopped 38 shots, Mitchell Marner and James van Riemsdyk each had a goal and an assist and the Maple Leafs beat the Boston Bruins 4-1 Saturday night to complete a sweep of the home-and-home series.
Lehtonen, 5-goal 1st period carry Stars past Maple Leafs 6-3
DALLAS (AP) — Kari Lehtonen made 40 saves and five Dallas players scored in the first period to send the Stars past the Toronto Maple Leafs 6-3 on Tuesday night.
Dallas took a 3-0 lead on goals by Devin Shore, Radek Faksa and Lauri Korpikoski. After Korpikoski's goal at 11:18, Curtis McElhinney replaced Maple Leafs goalie Frederik Andersen.
Tyler Bozak scored on a power play at 13:50 of the first for Toronto, but Brett Ritchie and Jamie Benn answered to give the Stars a 5-1 lead after one.
Marner scores in shootout to lift Leafs over Panthers
SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) — The Toronto Maple Leafs won their third straight game on the road and are leaning on their young players to do it.
Mitchell Marner scored in the third round of the shootout to lift the Maple Leafs over the Florida Panthers 3-2 on Wednesday night. Marner's shot from the slot went between the pads of Roberto Luongo.
Couture, Sharks rally for 3-2 shootout win at Toronto
TORONTO (AP) — Logan Couture scored the only goal in a shootout, and the San Jose Sharks rallied for a 3-2 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday night.
San Jose trailed 2-0 before Justin Braun and Joe Pavelski scored in a quick burst in the third period. Martin Jones made 29 saves in the opener of a four-game road trip.
Zach Hyman and Auston Matthews scored for Toronto, which has dropped five of six. Frederik Andersen made 40 stops.
Marner scores twice in Leafs’ 2-1 win over Sabres
BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Mitchell Marner was the latest rookie to lead the Toronto Maple Leafs to victory.
Marner scored both goals in a 2-1 defeat of the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday night. It was the Maple Leafs' first road win of the season.
"He made the right plays at the right time," said Maple Leafs goaltender Frederick Andersen, who made 42 saves. "It was cool to see him bury a couple there. Some big goals on the road here."
