Romania upsets Czechs in Fed Cup, Australia beats US
Romania upset defending champion Czech Republic 3-2 to advance to the semifinals of the Fed Cup on Sunday, along with France, Belarus and Australia.
Romania reached the semifinals for the first time after its first victory against the Czechs, who won six titles in the last eight years.
Irina-Camelia Begu and Monica Niculescu teamed up to clinch the best-of-five contest with a 6-7 (2), 6-4, 6-4 win over Czech pair Katerina Siniakova and Barbora Krejcikova in the doubles.
Zhang retires dizzy in steamy Thailand; Wang, Linette go on
HUA HIN, Thailand (AP) — Australian Open doubles champion Zhang Shuai retired from her second-round singles against Chinese countrywoman Wang Yafan citing dizziness at the Thailand Open on Thursday.
The fifth-seeded Zhang was trailing 4-1 when she retired against Wang in hot and humid conditions.
"I'm not feeling well. I feel so tired since the Australian Open," Zhang said.
"I still felt OK in the first round (on Tuesday). But on Wednesday my body really felt bad. I'm sorry that I have to retire."
Sharapova retires with injury, Sabalenka reaches semifinals
SHENZHEN, China (AP) — Maria Sharapova retired from her match at the Shenzhen Open with an injury on Friday, giving top-seeded Aryna Sabalenka a spot in the tournament's semifinals.
The fifth-seeded Sharapova was trailing 6-1, 4-2 when she stopped because of a left thigh injury.
Sharapova received off-court medical treatment between the two sets.
"I think we both played well and then she got injured," Sabalenka said. "Hopefully she will get well soon."
Rain disrupts quarterfinals at Shenzhen Open
SHENZHEN, China (AP) — Rain disrupted play at the Shenzhen Open on Thursday with two quarterfinal matches suspended.
Qualifier Veronika Kudermetova was leading Vera Zvonareva 6-4 and Sorana Cirstea was leading Alison Riske 2-0 when play was stopped. The matches will resume on Friday.
In the other quarterfinal matches, top-seeded Aryna Sabalenka will take on fifth-seeded Maria Sharapova and Romanian qualifier Monica Niculescu will meet Wang Yafan.
Niculescu upsets Ostapenko in 1st round of Shenzhen Open
SHENZHEN, China (AP) — Qualifier Monica Niculescu upset fourth-seeded Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia 6-0, 6-2 in the first round of the Shenzhen Open on Tuesday.
The 99th-ranked Niculescu swept past the 2017 French Open champion in 51 minutes with Ostapenko winning only four points in the first set.
"I came here early, and actually I didn't spend Christmas at home, I spent it on the plane," Niculescu said.
"But that suits (me) well ... I thought I really played well on Center Court."
Top-seeded Svitolina reached Hong Kong Open quarterfinals
HONG KONG (AP) — Top-seeded Elina Svitolina reached the Hong Kong Open quarterfinals by beating Japanese qualifier Nao Hibino 6-0, 6-3 on Thursday.
Svitolina, who is in the hunt to earn one of the three remaining spots for the upcoming WTA Finals in Singapore, will next play sixth-seeded Wang Qiang. The Chinese player defeated Christina McHale 7-5, 6-4.
Seventh-seeded Daria Gavrilova also advanced, beating Monica Niculescu 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (3).
Wang overpowers Bouchard to reach Taiwan Open semifinals
TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — Yafan Wang defeated Eugenie Bouchard 6-4, 6-0 to advance to the semifinals of the Taiwan Open on Friday.
Wang took advantage of six double-faults by the 2014 Wimbledon finalist and will next face fourth-seeded Timea Babos, who beat Magda Linette 6-1, 6-3.

HOBART, Australia (AP) — British qualifier Heather Watson won the first 11 games of the match in defeating Donna Vekic 6-0, 6-4 and advancing to the Hobart International semifinals on Thursday.
Leading 5-0 in the second set, Vekic won four games in a row before Watson clinched it.
"I knew she'd change something and swing freely because you've got nothing to lose at that point," Watson said. "I just had to stick with her."
2nd-seeded Mertens advances to Hobart quarterfinals
HOBART, Australia (AP) — Defending champion Elise Mertens beat Beatriz Haddad Maia 6-4, 6-4 on Tuesday to advance the Hobart International quarterfinals.
Mertens came from qualifying and No. 127 in the world in the 2017 Hobart event to win the title. She'll next meet last year's runner-up Monica Niculescu or American Varvara Lepchenko for a semifinal berth.

HOBART, Australia (AP) — Belgian qualifier Elise Mertens' decision to forego singles qualifying for the Australian Open paid big dividends Saturday when she beat Monica Niculescu 6-3, 6-1 in the Hobart International final.
As the 21-year-old Mertens advanced through the Hobart field, including a win over top-seeded Kiki Bertens, she had a difficult decision to make: withdraw from the tournament and head to Melbourne for Open qualifying, or stay in the Tasmanian state capital and keep playing.
Agnieszka Radwanska reaches quarterfinals at Shenzhen Open
SHENZHEN, China (AP) — Defending champion Agnieszka Radwanska reached the quarterfinals of the Shenzhen Open on Tuesday with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Sorana Cirstea.

Arruabarrena beats Niculescu in 3 sets to win Korea Open
SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Lara Arruabarrena of Spain beat Monica Niculescu of Romania 6-0, 2-6, 6-0 on Sunday to win the Korea Open and claim her second WTA singles title.
After racing through the opening set, Arruabarrena double faulted twice to surrender her serve in the fourth game of the second and Niculescu seized the opportunity to level the match.
Arruabarrena broke with a superb lob early in the third set and the match swung decisively in her favor.
Niculescu advances to final of Korea Open
SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Fifth-seeded Monica Niculescu of Romania defeated Zhang Shuai of China 6-0, 6-4 on Saturday to advance to the final of the Korea Open.
The 28-year-old Niculescu, playing in her first event since reaching the third round of the U.S. Open, won seven of 12 break points on her way to a 74-minute win over third-seeded Zhang.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Yanina Wickmayer beat Lauren Davis 6-4, 6-2 in the Citi Open final Sunday to win the fifth WTA title of her career.
Wickmayer, a 26-year-old Belgian who was seeded No. 7 at the hard-court tournament, is the third woman to win both the singles and doubles championships at the same event this season.
She teamed with Monica Niculescu to win the doubles at the Citi Open on Saturday.
