Visitors evacuated, animals moved after fire at British zoo
LONDON (AP) — A fire broke out Saturday in an enclosure at one of Britain's largest zoos, forcing keepers to evacuate visitors and move animals away from the flames.
Witnesses said the blaze broke out about 11:30 a.m. in the Monsoon Forest habitat area, with winds fanning flames in the building's inflatable roof. The zoo, which is near Chester, south of the English city of Liverpool, did not give a cause for the fire.
Storm-damaged Talking Stick Resort to reopen Monday
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — After a month-long delay, a Scottsdale-area resort closed because of monsoon storm flooding is at last reopening.
The Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community announced the Talking Stick Resort and Casino will reopen at noon Monday.
Flooding and damaged forced hundreds of guests and employees to evacuate the resort and the property closed Aug. 11.
28 people missing after boat capsizes in India’s northeast
GAUHATI, India (AP) — Police in India say 28 people are missing after a motorized boat capsized in the flooded Brahmputra River in the remote northeast.
Police officer Mihirjit Dayan says the boat was bringing 40 people to Gauhati, the capital of Assam state, from a village across the river.
He says 12 people have been rescued and a search is ongoing for the 28 missing.
Hundreds in NE India flee homes to escape river flooding
GAUHATI, India (AP) — Indian authorities have issued an alert about flooding from a rain-swollen river that flows from China and have rescued some from an island in the river in the remote northeast.
Tamiyo Tatak, a district magistrate, said Friday that hundreds of people from about a dozen villages have moved to higher ground in Arunachal Pradesh state on the Indian side.
Phoenix is above average for rainfall in monsoon season
PHOENIX (AP) — National Weather Service meteorologists say Phoenix is about 22 percent above average for rainfall in this year's monsoon season.
They say Phoenix has received 2.2 inches of rain so far in the annual monsoon season, which runs from mid-June to the end of September.
The 30-year average of monsoon rainfall to date is about 1.8 inches.
Monsoon storm dumps heavy rain, hail over Phoenix metro area
PHOENIX (AP) — A monsoon storm has dumped heavy rain and some hail over many sections of the Phoenix metro area.
The National Weather Service issued a flash-flood warning for parts of Maricopa County until 9 p.m. Thursday.
Cave Creek and Carefree received more than an inch of rain in an hour late Thursday afternoon and that caused some washes to flood.
Indian military scales down flood rescue operations
KOCHI, India (AP) — The Indian military is scaling down rescue operations in the southern state of Kerala, a tropical tourist haven where intense floods killed more than 200 people and drove hundreds of thousands from their homes.
Decreasing rains and floodwaters means the navy can cut back on its rescue teams in Kerala, navy spokesman Capt. D.K. Sharma said in a statement Monday. The navy has rescued nearly 16,000 people in the state.

TRIVANDRUM, India (AP) — Thousands of stranded people were waiting to be rescued and officials pleaded for more help from relentless monsoon floods that have partially submerged the southern Indian state of Kerala, where more than 190 have died in a little over a week.
Heavy rains hit parts of the state again Saturday morning, slowing attempts to deploy rescuers and get relief supplies to isolated areas. Many have seen no help for days and can only be reached by boat or helicopter.

State of emergency declared for Mammoth after storm damage
PHOENIX (AP) — Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey has declared a state of emergency for Mammoth after monsoon rains damaged roadways and affected the small town's potable water system.
The emergency declaration Monday directs $200,000 in emergency funds for immediate emergency protective measures and permanent repairs to protect the more than 1,200 residents in the Pinal County town.
Mammoth received more than three inches of rain during a series of storms from July 26-29.

The Durango Herald reports that while Arizona and New Mexico have received above average rainfall this summer, a high pressure system is keeping the stream of moisture from hitting southwestern Colorado.

Rains leave river covered in ash, wildfire debris
SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — Recent rains have sent ashes and debris to a northeastern New Mexico river that supplies water to about 1,000 people, making it unfeasible for residents to draw water from it.
Monsoon rains swept up remnants from the burn scar left by a spring wildfire at Ute Park and sent it into the Cimarron River's currents.
"Every time it rains, it just turns to black," Damian Casias, the Village of Cimarron's public works supervisor, said of the Cimarron River.

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) — The National Weather Service says the storm that swept across northern Arizona over the weekend amounted to a 100-year event.
The Arizona Daily Sun reports that those types of storms have a 1 percent chance of happening every year and that Flagstaff saw an average of 2 inches of rain per hour Sunday afternoon.
Monsoons Threaten Rohingya Refugees
GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK, Ariz. (AP) — With monsoon storms significantly lowering the fire danger risk, fire restrictions are being lifted at the entire Grand Canyon National Park.
Park officials say the stage 2 restrictions are scheduled to be lifted at 8 a.m. Friday.
Grand Canyon remains in stage 1 restrictions year-round, which require that a campfire always be in a designated fire ring within maintained campground.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — The Cibola National Forest and National Grasslands is lifting fire restrictions because widespread precipitation from the monsoon has substantially reduced the fire danger.
Cibola's announcement Thursday say the restrictions will be lifted at 8 a.m. Friday and that the decision resulted from consideration of moisture levels, recent and predict rainfall and other weather conditions.

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — Recent monsoon rains and increased humidity are leading forestry officials to lift fire restrictions across southeastern Arizona.
Officials representing various agencies including the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management will lift all fire restrictions Friday in parks and forest land in the region.
They say all the rain and other precipitation have lessened the chances that a wildfire will break out.
GAUHATI, India (AP) — A mudslide triggered by monsoon rains demolished tin-roofed homes on a hillside in northeastern India, killing at least eight children and one woman while they were sleeping, a government official said Wednesday.

MARANA, Ariz. (AP) — Authorities say heavy rain from a monsoon storm in southern Arizona has caused a train derailment in Marana.
Northwest Fire District officials say about 20 cars went off the rails around 3 p.m. Tuesday as a strong storm was going through the Marana area near Interstate 10.
They say there's no indication any hazardous material spilled from the derailment, but debris is scattered across train tracks and a frontage road.
