Coast Guard rescues 6 in Louisiana from disabled bass boat
MORGAN CITY, La. (AP) — The Coast Guard says a helicopter crew rescued two adults and four children early Christmas Eve from a disabled bass boat in Louisiana.
A Coast Guard news release says the 16-foot (5-meter) bass boat was in water too shallow for a St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office rescue boat to reach.
The sheriff's office reported at 12:50 a.m. Monday that the boat was in trouble in the Atchafalaya Bay near Morgan City, about 70 miles (112 kilometers) from New Orleans.
Man arrested in death of retired Louisiana principal
MORGAN CITY, La. (AP) — A south Louisiana man has been arrested in connection with the death of a retired principal.
Morgan City police say they arrested 50-year-old Michael Guidry on Saturday, booking him with first-degree murder, bank fraud and violating his parole.
Guidry, a Morgan city resident, is accused of killing 70-year-old Patricia Lyn Russo. Her body was found Monday inside her home.
FRANKLIN, La. (AP) — Authorities say four inmates who escaped from a Louisiana jail have been captured, and three deputies have been fired.
St. Mary Parish Sheriff Scott Anslum tells news outlets the inmates escaped Sunday and were found Monday.
Anslum says an internal investigation of the escapes determined the deputies "failed to follow proper security protocol," and they are no longer employed by his office.
Louisiana man pleads guilty in tax fraud case
LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) — A Louisiana man has pleaded guilty to failing to report more than $250,000 in income on his 2012 tax return.
U.S. Attorney David C. Joseph, in a news release Friday, said 39-year-old Victory Nam Ho, of Morgan City, entered the plea last week before U.S. Magistrate Judge Carol Whitehurst to one count of filing a false tax return. The plea will become final when accepted by U.S. District Judge Elizabeth E. Foote.
MORGAN CITY, La. (AP) — A Louisiana company has an $18 million contract to design and build a naval landing craft, and the Pentagon says likely options would add another $411 million.

At the confluence of the Mississippi, Atchafalaya and Red rivers, the Corps has erected towering gates that bend the flow of the water. Without human intervention, the current channel of the Mississippi River would slow to a trickle while the Atchafalaya would swell.

Search for missing fisherman ends
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The U.S. Coast Guard has suspended a search for a man reported missing near Morgan City, Louisiana.
Coast Guard Sector New Orleans says it suspended the search at 1:17 p.m. Wednesday after searching for about 61 hours for a Vietnamese man reported missing Sunday evening. The man was last seen aboard a boat 37 miles southwest of Morgan City.
Authorities say the search covered about 2,050 square nautical miles (3,796 kilometers).

FRANKLIN, La. (AP) — A Louisiana judge has convicted a 63-year-old man on 221 counts of theft, for his role in taking $1.8 million from an investment holdings company over 15 years.
Judge Keith Comeaux also found Armond Duhon guilty Friday of two counts of money laundering and one of racketeering for his part in a scheme that prosecutors said siphoned off the money from a Morgan City-based company from 1999 through 2014.
Morgan City woman sentenced in tax fraud case
ALEXANDRIA, La. (AP) — A 40-year-old Morgan City woman has been sentenced to 25 months in prison for her role in a scheme to use stolen identities to file false tax returns and pocket refunds.
U.S. Attorney Stephanie Finley said in a news release Laphrida Watts was sentenced Monday U.S. District Judge Dee Drell on one count of conspiracy to defraud the United States and one count of aggravated identity theft.
Young girl dies from injuries suffered in boat accident
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — A 7-year-old girl has died from severe head trauma suffered in a two-boat collision in Bayou Cheramie.
The state Department of Wildlife and Fisheries said Monday that Jaidyn Montet, of Bayou L'Ourse, was pronounced dead at a Morgan City hospital after a bass boat collided Sunday with the 20-foot aluminum boat carrying her and three other people.
The driver of the aluminum boat was treated for minor injuries. No other injuries were reported.
LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) — The former executive director of the Morgan City Housing Authority and three former employees have been sentenced for a conspiracy related to theft of half a million dollars.

Greyhound expands south Louisiana service
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Greyhound says it is expanding its service in south Louisiana to include stops in more cities and towns between Baton Rouge and Lafayette.
Greyhound says stops in Raceland, Thibodaux, Morgan City and New Iberia will be added along with the two daily roundtrips between Baton Rouge and Lafayette.
