Moses Lake man gets minimum of 10 years for child rape
EPHRATA, Wash. (AP) — A Moses Lake man has been sentenced to a minimum of 10 years and up to life in prison for first-degree child rape and molestation.
The Columbia Basin Herald reports 58-year-old Isabel Rocha Jr. was sentenced Wednesday in Grant County Superior Court.
Officials ID truckers killed after icy interstate crashes

3 people killed in a two-car collision near Madras
MADRAS, Ore. (AP) — Three people were killed in a two-car collision near on U.S. Highway 97 near Madras.
Two of the victims were girls under the age of 18.
A car driven by 33-year-old Sarah Marie Steffler, of Moses Lake, Washington, crossed the centerline early Friday morning and crashed into a guardrail before colliding with a car driven by Miguel Galvan Sanchez of Manson, Washington.
MOSES LAKE, Wash. (AP) — Authorities say a well-known Moses Lake man who called plays for high school sporting events has died in a bicycle collision.
The Grant County Sheriff's Office says 89-year-old Robert "Mel" Olson, of Moses Lake, was struck by a pickup truck while riding his bicycle inside a trailer park Tuesday afternoon. Olson was taken to a local hospital where he died of his injuries.
Spokane man convicted in 2015 deadly shooting

WARDEN, Wash. (AP) — The Grant County Sheriff's Office says a 53-year-old substitute teacher has been arrested in a voyeurism investigation.
Authorities say the investigation began last October when a 9-year-old girl in Warden, southeast of Moses Lake, reported that teacher Michael S. Leavitt had used his phone to record under her dress in her classroom. Warden police seized the phone, which showed evidence of files having been recently deleted.

MOSES LAKE, Wash. (AP) — It turns out, Moses Lake is the perfect place to launch a weather balloon.
"It's flat," said Avidan Baral, a Seattle Academy senior. "Most of the surrounding area is flat, except for the river, which shouldn't be a big deal."

Woman burned as gas is pumped into garbage can in backseat
MOSES LAKE, Wash. (AP) — Authorities say a Washington woman suffered severe burns after gasoline fumes ignited when gas was being pumped into a garbage can in a car's backseat.
KOMO-TV reports the Grant County Sheriff's Office says the woman, who was a passenger early Saturday morning at a Cascade Valley Grocery convenience store, was smoking a cigarette, which ignited the flames.

Beekeeper keeps the hives thriving in Moses Lake
MOSES LAKE, Wash. (AP) — With winter now upon us and temperatures dipping into the mid- to low 20s, the honey bees at Grigg Apiaries, Inc. have been tucked away for the season. About 8,000 hives keep alive and warm while residing in Travis and Brandy Grigg's shop, awaiting the day when they will be released once more.
"We are always checking health and feed supply," said Travis.

State fines landowners $618K for illegal pumping of water
SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — The state of Washington is fining some landowners near Moses Lake $618,000 for illegally pumping more than 500 million gallons from the declining Odessa aquifer.
The state Department of Ecology in June issued cease and desist orders requiring the landowners to stop pumping groundwater on more than 500 acres of crops. But the landowners continued to pump water for 3½ months.
Health care worker in Grant County has mumps
MOSES LAKE, Wash. (AP) — The Grant County Health District has issued an alert about a confirmed case of mumps in a Grant County resident.
The health district says a vaccinated health care worker has been confirmed with the mumps.
KXLY-TV of Spokane reports the worker developed symptoms on December 2, which means their contagious period was from November 30 through December 7.
Drugs worth more than $1 million seized in Grant County this month

Traffic stop leads officials to $1.5 million worth of drugs
MOSES LAKE, Wash. (AP) — A traffic stop and drug bust led Moses Lake police to serve seven warrants that netted $1.2 million in meth, heroin and marijuana.
Grant County Sheriff Tom Jones says it was the largest drug seizure in the history of the Interagency Narcotics Enforcement Team.
Police stopped José Miranda on October 5 and allegedly found nearly eight pounds of methamphetamine and heroin. He was charged in federal court and had his initial appearance last week.
Big drug busts in Grant, Franklin and Adams counties
EPHRATA, Wash. (AP) — A series of drug busts in central Washington saw officers seize more than 41,000 pounds of illegal marijuana and 56 illegal guns.
The Grant County Sheriff's Office says 24 people were arrested and $55,000 in cash was seized.
The drug busts occurred in Grant, Franklin and Adams counties in August and September.
Woman receives head injury in late-night shooting near Moses Lake
The Grant County Sheriff’s Office says a woman received “a grazing injury to her scalp” Sunday night when she was shot while driving through a residential neighborhood just outside Moses Lake.
The sheriff’s office said several people called 911 around 11 p.m. to report shots being fired from a white Mercedes or Lexus SUV that appeared to be chasing another car through the neighborhood.
Police: 41,000 pounds of pot, guns seized at illegal grows
EPHRATA, Wash. (AP) — Authorities say a multi-agency effort has netted over 41,000 pounds of marijuana, more than 50 firearms, ammunition, cash and hazardous chemicals used in illegal growing operations in central Washington.
The Grant County Sheriff's Office says authorities in Grant, Franklin and Adams counties participated in serving warrants and making arrests from early August through late September.
Moses Lake man gets 9 years in prison for child pornography
SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — Officials say a 53-year-old Moses Lake man has been sentenced to nine years in federal prison for receiving child pornography.
The U.S. Justice Department said Wednesday that Daniel Vadnais was also sentenced to 20 years of court supervision after his prison sentence is served and that he will have to register as a sex offender.
Vadnais pleaded guilty in May to receipt of child pornography.
New Grant County buses running between Ellensburg, Moses Lake
The Grant Transit Authority began running buses between Ellensburg and Moses Lake earlier this month.
Routes 320 and 321 will run from Moses Lake to Ellensburg and back multiple times per day Monday through Friday.
The new routes were made possible by a grant to help fund travel expenses for rural education. Many students in Moses Lake and the surrounding areas attend Central Washington University because of its proximity.
1 injured in reported accidental shooting at deputy’s home
MOSES LAKE, Wash. (AP) — Moses Lake Police say one person was injured in a reported accidental shooting at the home a Grant County sheriff's deputy.
The person was taken to a local hospital with a gunshot wound following the Wednesday night shooting.
Moses Lake Capt. Mike Williams tells KXLY-TV that it happened around 8 p.m. in a home owned by a deputy, whose identity was not released.

Moses Lake woman who died in house fire identified
An individual who died in a Moses Lake house fire Thursday morning has been identified as 84-year-old Lora Smart.
Smart died of smoke inhalation, according to Grant County Coroner Craig Morrison. Assessor records indicate that Smart had lived in the home at 1581 Fairway Drive Northeast since 1993.
The fire department was called to Smart’s home just after 7:30 a.m. Thursday and found the house fully engulfed in fire. Smart was discovered by firefighters.
MOSES LAKE, Wash. (AP) — A paraglider who was trapped on a cliff face in Grant County had to be rescued by a military helicopter.
The Grant County Sheriff's Office says a helicopter from the nearby Yakima Firing Range rescued the paraglider from the cliff on Sunday afternoon.
KREM-TV says the paraglider's name and hometown have not been released. The sheriff's office says she was flown to a Yakima hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries.
RICHLAND, Wash. (AP) — Authorities say two people died in a vehicle crash in southeastern Washington on Monday.
The Tri-City Herald reports (https://goo.gl/L9s1eK ) 17-year-old German Negrete of Moses Lake was driving north on Highway 17 about north of Mesa when he pulled into the southbound lane to pass.
The Washington State Patrol says Negrete's Ford Focus hit a pickup truck driven by 50-year-old Joseph Richard of Boise, Idaho.
MOSES LAKE, Wash. (AP) — A group of Moses Lake residents have appealed a judge's ruling that upheld the narrow passage of a $135 million school district construction bond.
