Authorities: 3 die in Iowa after van and car crash into semi
MOUNT PLEASANT, Iowa (AP) — Authorities say three people have been killed after a minivan and a car crashed into an overturned semitractor-trailer on a southeastern Iowa highway.
Central Michigan whips Western Michigan in 2nd half, 85-64
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (AP) — Larry Austin Jr. tossed in 22 points and pulled down 11 rebounds as Central Michigan pulled away from Western Michigan in the second half to post an 85-64 victory on Saturday.
Central Michigan now has won back-to-back games after snapping a three-game losing streak by beating Eastern Michigan Tuesday. Western Michigan's home game with Kent State was pushed back to later this month because of weather and travel concerns.
Central Michigan holds off Eastern Michigan 86-82

Judge: Man accused of killing parents at college wasn’t sane
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (AP) — An Illinois man charged with killing his parents in his Michigan university dorm room was committed to a psychiatric facility Friday after a judge found he was mentally ill at the time of the shootings.
The decision means there won't be a trial for 20-year-old James Davis Jr., who had pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity and could be held indefinitely.

Walton scores 24, leads Ball State down stretch to beat CMU
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (AP) — K.J. Walton scored 16 of his career-high 24 points in the second half to lead Ball State to an 83-72 victory over Central Michigan on Saturday.
The Chippewas had a five-point lead when Walton had a steal and dunk to spark an 18-3 run to give Ball State a 71-61 lead with five minutes left. Walton scored 10 points with three dunks during the stretch. CMU pulled within nine points but didn't get closer.
Searchers find body of missing snowmobiler in southeast Iowa
ROME, Iowa (AP) — Authorities say they have found the body of a missing snowmobiler in southeast Iowa.
The Henry County Sheriff's Office says searchers on Monday morning found the body of 25-year-old Spencer Adam, of Richland. He was reported missing just before 2 a.m. Monday.
His snowmobile was found about an hour later west of Mount Pleasant, just south of the village of Rome. His body was found in the Skunk River, about three-fourths of a mile from where the snowmobile was found.
Turner takes over, Bowling Green beats C. Michigan 97-87 OT
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (AP) — Justin Turner scored 12 straight points in overtime, finishing with 30 and securing Bowling Green's 97-87 win over Central Michigan in a clash of Mid-American Conference unbeatens on Saturday.
Antwon Lillard scored first in OT and, with the 80-78 lead, Bowling Green (11-5, 3-0) never trailed again. Kevin McKay forged an 84-84 tie with a 3-pointer and that's when Turner took over.
Austin hits winner, Central Michigan tops Akron 88-86 in OT
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (AP) — Larry Austin Jr. drove for a layup that kissed softly off the glass with 2.5 seconds left and Central Michigan battled past Akron in overtime on Tuesday night for its seventh straight win.
Jimond Ivey scored 24 points to lead Akron, including two free throws with 12.4 seconds remaining in overtime to knot the score 86-86. Ivey also grabbed 11 rebounds and made seven assists with just one turnover.
DiLeo leads stat-full CMU past Indiana South Bend 123-76
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (AP) — David DiLeo scored 24 points with six 3-pointers, Larry Austin Jr. scored 23 and Central Michigan filled the stat sheet with a 123-76 win over NAIA-member Indiana South Bend on Sunday.
The Chippewas tied a program record with their 11th nonconference victory of the season, extended their win streak to five and remained undefeated at home (7-0).
Roundtree, DiLeo lift C Michigan past Jackson St 81-72
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (AP) — Shawn Roundtree and David DiLeo both scored 21 points and Central Michigan beat Jackson State 81-72 on Saturday.

Durr helps No. 3 Louisville beat Central Michigan 72-68
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (AP) — Asia Durr has taught a lot of lessons to opponents during her decorated four years at Louisville.
The All-American also has learned a few things along the way, like the virtue of patience.
Durr scored 26 of her 31 points in the second half and No. 3 Louisville held off Central Michigan 72-68 on Thursday night to improve to 12-0 for the second straight season.

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (AP) — Larry Austin Jr. scored 20 points, Kevin McKay added 16 points and 13 rebounds and Central Michigan beat Southern Utah 95-86 on Saturday night.
Central Michigan (8-2) has won four of its last five games while Southern Utah (4-3) has lost three of four. The Chippewas avenged an 86-80 loss at Southern Utah last season that snapped a seven-game win streak.
Iowa residents happy IWU will continue operations
MOUNT PLEASANT, Iowa (AP) — The announcement made last month of Iowa Wesleyan University's possible closure spurred many into a frenzy of uncertainty, but now that the decision has been made to continue its operations, the town's residents are resting easier.
The private, four-year university supplies the Mount Pleasant area with about 150 jobs, and its about 700 students keep many local businesses, like the Coffee Depot, bustling.
Central Michigan University moves to improve campus housing
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (AP) — Central Michigan University is moving forward on the first part of a $76 million campus housing improvement project.
The Mount Pleasant school's Board of Trustees approved $13 million Thursday to improve the residence life experience for students. The planned work in 2019 includes modernizing the North Residence Hall Complex as well as improvements at the South and East residence hall complexes.
McElwain takes C. Michigan job after year as Wolverine aide
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (AP) — Michigan receivers coach Jim McElwain has been named head coach at Central Michigan.
Central Michigan announced McElwain's hiring Sunday. He replaces John Bonamego, who went 1-11 in his fourth season after taking the Chippewas to three straight bowls.
The 56-year-old McElwain was at Michigan for one season. He previously coached at Florida, where he was Southeastern Conference coach of the year in his first season (2015) and went 22-12 overall.
Trial set for Iowa mom in death of maggot-infested baby

Iowa college says new funding saving it from closure
MOUNT PLEASANT, Iowa (AP) — A private school in southeast Iowa that was on the verge of closure says it has secured new funding that will keep its doors open.
The board of Iowa Wesleyan University in Mount Pleasant voted Thursday to continue operations after securing funding from alumni and the community, as well as collaboration with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development.
Michigan man who posed as medic had history of lying
HOLLAND, Mich. (AP) — Court records show that a Michigan man who will soon finish a county jail sentence for impersonating an ambulance medic had a history of lying.
The Detroit News reports that 42-year-old Tony Fortuna is nearing the end of his nine months in Kent County Jail. He was sentenced in May for impersonating a Grand Rapids ambulance medic.
Bowling Green rallies to beat Central Michigan 24-13
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (AP) — Jarret Doege threw for a touchdown, Andrew Clair ran for a score and Bowling Green cashed in on an on-side kick and a turnover to beat Central Michigan 24-13 on Saturday.
Trailing 13-0 at halftime, the Falcons scored on Andrew Clair's 29-yard run, recovered the ensuing on-side kick and pulled ahead 14-13 six plays later when Doege hit Dorian Hendrix on a 2-yard pass.
CMU has no trouble with Chicago State in 101-60 victory
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (AP) — Larry Austin had 17 points and nine assists to help Central Michigan roll to a 101-60 rout of Chicago State on Friday night.
Austin, a graduate transfer from Vanderbilt, shot 7 of 13 from the field. Matt Beachler made four 3-pointers and finished with 16 points for the Chippewas (2-0). Kevin McKay had 11 points and eight rebounds. Shawn Roundtree, last season's leading scorer, made a pair of 3s and chipped in eight points in 16 minutes.
McKay leads Central Michigan over Concordia (Mich.) 98-67
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (AP) — Kevin McKay scored 18 of his 27 points in the second half on Tuesday night and Central Michigan beat Concordia (Michigan) 98-67.
McKay was 10 of 13 from the field and 7 of 10 from the foul line while making his first career start for the Chippewas. Shawn Roundtree added 18 points, Larry Austin scored 17 and David DiLeo had 11 points and nine rebounds.
The Chippewas scored the first 14 points and led by at least 10 points for the rest of the game.

Iowa father takes stand, blames mother for baby’s death

Zachary Paul Koehn, 29, said under questioning from his attorney that he had entrusted care of 4-month-old Sterling Koehn to the baby's mother, the Courier reported .
Parents seek public’s help in son’s 2015 hit-and-run death
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (AP) — The parents of a Detroit-area college student who was killed in a hit-and-run in 2015 again are pleading for help to solve the case.
Ryan Tsatsos of Macomb County was killed as he walked to his dorm at Central Michigan University on a rainy Halloween night. He was just a few weeks away from his 18th birthday.
His mother, Julie Tsatsos, made a public appeal to the driver this week, saying "Don't be fearful. ... Come forward. Relieve the pressure."

Davis Jr. was 19 when James Davis Sr. and Diva Davis, of Plainfield, Illinois, were slain March 2 on the Central Michigan University campus in Mount Pleasant.

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (AP) — Morgan Hagee kicked a 36-yard field goal with 47 seconds to go and the Ball State defense held on for a 24-23 win over Central Michigan on Saturday.
Riley Neal had a touchdown pass and touchdown run in the fourth quarter that rallied the Cardinals (3-4, 2-1 Mid-American Conference) to a 21-20 lead. He engineered the 12-play, 56-yard drive that set up the go-ahead kick in the final minute.
Neal passed for 183 yards and touchdown and ran for 55 yards and two more scores.
CMU drops fraternity after death, misconduct allegations
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (AP) — Central Michigan University says it has kicked a fraternity out of school after many allegations of sexual misconduct and hazing and the death of a member.
Vice President Steven Johnson says the allegations against Phi Sigma Phi show a "significant threat to the safety" of students. He says the university has been frustrated by witnesses who have been uncooperative or unwilling to discuss certain matters.
Freshmen runners lead Buffalo past Central Michigan 34-24
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (AP) — Tyree Jackson threw for a touchdown and ran for another and freshmen running backs Kevin Marks and Jaret Patterson had career days to lead Buffalo to a 34-24 win over Central Michigan on Saturday.
Jackson had a 6-yard scoring pass to Tyler Mabry in the first quarter and ran 5 yards for a touchdown in the second, helping the Bulls (5-1, 2-0 Mid-American Conference) take a 17-3 lead.
Doctor acquitted of pill mill charges will get assets back
CARO, Mich. (AP) — A judge says more than $6 million in assets must be returned to a Michigan doctor who was acquitted of running a pill mill at his clinics.
The Saginaw News says Dr. Joseph Oesterling last year was acquitted of running a criminal enterprise. He was accused of excessively prescribing medicine through his clinics in Caro, Saginaw and Mount Pleasant.
Central Michigan handles Maine 17-5 in Lazzaro’s first start
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (AP) — Tommy Lazzaro had a touchdown pass and ran for a score in his first career start to lead Central Michigan to a 17-5 victory over Maine on Saturday.
Lazzaro replaced sophomore starter Tony Poljan after the offense struggled in the Chippewas' 0-3 start. Lazzaro ran it in from 5 yards out in the first quarter and connected with JaCorey Sullivan for a 5-yard TD in the fourth that put Central Michigan (1-3) up two scores.
