According to the United States Geological Survey, the magnitude 7.1 quake hit Wednesday afternoon about 230 kilometers (143 miles) east of Tadine in New Caledonia's Loyalty Islands.
The quake was about 290 kilometers (181 miles) from Isangel in Vanuatu. The USGS says it was about 26 kilometers (16 miles) deep.

Nine wooden objects, including age-worn sculptures and large decorative arrows dating from the 16th century, are to go under the hammer on Tuesday.
A group linked to the Kanak people stopped a 2015 sale of the objects, suspecting they were stolen.

Australian man dies after shark attack in New Caledonia
WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — An Australian man has died after a large shark attacked him while he was kitesurfing in New Caledonia, a French island territory in the South Pacific, marine authorities said Wednesday.
The 50-year-old man had fallen from his board Tuesday in a large lagoon near the northwestern town of Koumac when the shark bit deep into his right thigh, said Nicolas Renaud, the director of the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center.
