Police: Woman drove drunk on vanilla extract
NEW CANAAN, Conn. (AP) — Police say a Connecticut woman charged with driving under the influence was drunk on vanilla extract, which contains a significant amount of alcohol.
Hearst Connecticut Media reports that New Canaan police found 50-year-old Stefanie Warner-Grise sitting in a car at an intersection with her eyes closed at about 4:45 p.m. Wednesday.
Debate over building crosswalks continues in Norwalk
NORWALK, Conn. (AP) — In November 2004, 79-year-old Bernard Wood was struck and killed by a car while trying to cross the road near the intersection of Silvermine and New Canaan avenues.
For years, the Broad River Neighborhood Association had pushed to have crosswalks painted at what neighbors described as one of the most "dangerous and unsafe" intersections in Norwalk. The tragedy finally brought the effort to fruition.
NWS: 2 tornados confirmed in Connecticut
NEW CANAAN, Conn. (AP) — The National Weather Service says two tornados touched down in Connecticut earlier this week as a series of severe thunderstorms made their way across the state.
The EF1 tornado with maximum wind speeds of 100 mph touched down in New Canaan at 5:29 p.m. Tuesday and lasted about 12 minutes, cutting a nearly four-mile path to Norwalk. It was about 100 yards wide.
The weather service says no fatalities or injuries were reported but there was damage to trees and cars.
Police: Teen driver leads officers on chase, hits cruiser
NEW CANAAN, Conn. (AP) — A 15-year-old Connecticut boy is facing charges for allegedly leading police on a high speed and crashing into a cruiser.
The Stamford teen was charged with reckless driving, operating without a license and attempted assault on a police officer.
Police say the chase started around 5 p.m. Friday after an officer tried to stop a vehicle in New Canaan for a defective brake light.
Sister lunch ladies accused of stealing nearly $500K
NEW CANAAN, Conn. (AP) — Two sisters who were former cafeteria workers are charged with stealing nearly a half-million dollars from Connecticut schools over the last five years.
Police say 61-year-old Joanne Pascarelli, of Stratford, and her sister, 67-year-old Marie Wilson, of Wilton, turned themselves in to New Canaan police this weekend after warrants were issued for their arrest.
HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Mosquitoes in multiple Connecticut towns have tested positive for West Nile virus.
The Department of Public Health says Tuesday that mosquito pools in Bridgeport, Easton, New Canaan, Stratford and Waterbury have tested positive for the virus. The virus typically causes fever, headache, drowsiness, nausea and a rash.
The agency says no human or horse cases have been reported in the state this season, but 134 cases have been diagnosed since 2000 with three deaths.

EASTON, Conn. (AP) — Additional mosquitoes in Connecticut have tested positive for West Nile Virus.
The New Haven Register reports the virus was detected in a pool of mosquitoes collected June 18 in Easton. It is the second pool of the creatures to test positive for West Nile this season, the other being in New Canaan.
NEW CANAAN, Conn. (AP) — Real estate agents in a Connecticut town have agreed to a temporary ban on for sale signs outside homes in attempt to make the community more attractive.
The Advocate reports that the New Canaan Board of Realtors and the New Canaan Multiple Listing Service will start a six-month trial ban beginning July 1.

NEW CANAAN — St. Anthony’s boys lacrosse star Brennan O’Neill needed barely two minutes Saturday afternoon to start to take the game over at Dunning Stadium.
O’Neill’s first of five goals gave the visitors from Long Island a start. They scored the first four goals, never let New Canaan catch all the way up and beat the Rams 16-7.
It wasn’t all about O’Neill and his cohort of flashy offensive players, though, to New Canaan senior defender Chase Strupp, who wasn’t thrilled with his team’s effort.
College Lacrosse: Virginia 10, Vermont 9 New Canaan’s Kraus scores winner in homecoming
NEW CANAAN — The left side of the field opened up for Michael Kraus, and his homecoming had a storybook finish.
Kraus had a short-stick player defending him in transition at New Canaan High School’s Dunning Stadium, and the Rams alumnus scored the winning goal with 1:47 left in Virginia’s 10-9 victory over Vermont on Saturday in an NCAA men’s lacrosse game.

NEW CANAAN — The turf at Dunning Stadium on the New Canaan High School campus is used to hosting high-level matchups with elite-level talent.
That talent will take a step up Saturday afternoon at 1 when the No. 13 Virginia men’s lacrosse team faces off against Vermont.
The game will be preceded by a fan-fest at 9 a.m. and followed by a matchup between New Canaan and St. Anthony’s of New York.
Connecticut has not been considered a football recruiting hotbed, but in the last few years there have been a handful of high-level prospects at the top.
Michigan has had success in recruiting that talent the last few cycles.
Last Friday, the Wolverines received a verbal commitment from New Canaan offensive tackle Jack Stewart. Should he sign with Michigan in December or February, he would be the sixth Wolverine signee from Connecticut in the last three classes.

STMFORD, Conn. (AP) — A Connecticut high school basketball coach arrested on heroin possession charges last weekend is out of a job.
The Stamford Advocate reports that 30-year-old Jose Amor stepped down as an assistant coach at New Canaan High School on Monday. Amor previously served as an assistant coach at Westhill High School in Stamford.
For the first time in FCIAC history, someone other than Darien, New Canaan, Greenwich or Wilton played for a league championship in girls lacrosse last season. That team was Ridgefield, which went on to lose to the Blue Wave, 17-7.
New Canaan’s Marinelli to receive Gold Key Award from Connecticut Sports Writers’ Alliance
CHESHIRE — He has won more games than any high school football coach in Connecticut history, including an eye-popping 12 state championships.
And yet, when Lou Marinelli was asked to name his favorite highlight in his 37 seasons at the helm at New Canaan High School, his response came as a bit of a shock to the dozen or so reporters who had gathered at the CIAC headquarters for the Connecticut Sports Writers’ Alliance Gold Key press conference Wednesday afternoon.
The arrival of Heath Quartet to New Canaan this weekend marks the first time a European string quartet has performed with the Treetops Chamber Music Society since its creation in 2006. The quartet will offer works from classic and contemporary composers, including Haydn, Tchaikovsky and Widmann.
Select trains on the New Canaan branch of Metro-North Railroad will have substitute busing Saturday evening.
The service is being changed to accommodate track work, the train service said. Buses to Stamford will operate 15 to 20 minutes earlier than the scheduled trains.

Hundreds packed the University of Connecticut Stamford auditorium last week to let Department of Transportation Commissioner James Redeker and our representatives in Hartford know this is a critical issue for our community. More than 4,000 taxpayers signed a petition in the last few days.
I’ve been criss-crossing the state for weeks, talking to folks about our transportation crisis: The proposed fare hikes on trains and buses coupled with service cuts on the branch lines, and the state Department of Transportation’s multi-billion dollar spending cuts.
I call it the “winter of our discontent” magical misery tour.
