Meg Medina wins Newbery medal, Sophie Blackall the Caldecott
NEW YORK (AP) — Meg Medina, the latest recipient of the John Newbery Medal, wrote her prize-winning children's book with a special intensity.
"There are so many negative characterizations these days of Latino families and what it is to be an immigrant," said Medina, a Cuban-American author whose "Merci Suarez Changes Gears" tells of an 11-year-old's struggles as she navigates between the worlds of her elite private school and her extended Latino family.
NEW YORK (AP) — Prize-winning children's author Richard Peck, who drew upon his Illinois roots for such favorites as "A Long Way from Chicago" and "A Year Down Yonder," has died.
Peck died on Wednesday at his home in New York City at age 84. His publisher, Penguin Young Readers, told The Associated Press, that he died after a battle with cancer.

NEW YORK (AP) — For his next tale about the chaotic life of young Joey Pigza, Jack Gantos has a special pitch.
Gantos is releasing "The Dented Head of Joey Pigza" as an original audiobook. The audio distributor and producer Audible told The Associated Press on Monday that the book comes out Sept. 18. (Audible is owned by Amazon.com.)
‘Hello, Universe’ wins Newbery for best children’s book
NEW YORK (AP) — Erin Entrada Kelly's "Hello, Universe," a nuanced account of a diverse group of middle school students and their unexpected encounters, has won the John Newbery Medal for the outstanding children's book of 2017. The Randolph Caldecott Medal for best illustration went to Matthew Cordell and his near-wordless story of a girl and the wolf pup she saves, "Wolf in the Snow."
Minnesota author Kelly Barnhill wins Newbery Medal
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Before winning the most prestigious prize in children's literature, Kelly Barnhill took a little detour.
Barnhill, named Monday as this year's winner of the John Newbery Medal for her fantasy novel "The Girl Who Drank the Moon," started writing children's stories in her late 20s — after two kids and a yearslong hiatus from the craft she studied as an undergraduate.
