Iowa looking for offense to help banged-up defense
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa has let its defense carry the load nearly all season.
The Hawkeyes might need some more help from their offense on Saturday at Indiana — like they got in last weekend's 48-point explosion at Minnesota — to bolster a unit that sudden looks a lot thinner.
Iowa to promote LB Wade, keep bringing Epenesa off bench
Iowa will likely keep bringing sophomore defensive end A.J. Epenesa off the bench and move Barrington Wade into the starting lineup to replace the injured Nick Niemann at linebacker.
Defensive coordinator Phil Parker said Wednesday the goal is to keep the explosive Epenesa as fresh as possible. Epenesa leads the Hawkeyes (3-1, 0-1 Big Ten) and is tied for the Big Ten lead with four sacks, and he also has four quarterback hurries and two forced fumbles.
Iowa seeking clarity at linebacker heading into the fall
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — The biggest hole Iowa will have to fill by September is at linebacker, where three multi-year starters have graduated and are preparing for their shot in the NFL.
The Hawkeyes appear to have gotten some clarity in the middle of their defense this spring.
IOWA CITY – Ben Niemann doesn’t expect his mother to show up for Iowa’s football game Saturday decked out in black and gold.
He’d also be a little surprised if there is any scarlet in the wardrobe that Lou Ann Niemann picks out to wear to the Iowa-Rutgers football game.
“She’ll be the person sitting in the stands wearing neutral colors, cheering for both teams,’’ the Hawkeye linebacker said.
