Favored Russians ooze confidence, feel like ‘red machine’
GANGNEUNG, South Korea (AP) — The Russians are here, and they look every bit like the gold-medal favorites everyone thinks they are.
They're stocked with NHL talent from Ilya Kovalchuk, Pavel Datsyuk and Slava Voynov to Kontinental Hockey League star Nikita Gusev and are fresh off an 8-1 drubbing of the Korean team in exhibition play. Asked to describe the Russian team, Nikita Nesterov said it is a "red machine."
Mikhail Grigorenko returns to Russia with CSKA
MOSCOW (AP) — Former Colorado Avalanche center Mikhail Grigorenko returned to Russia on Friday, signing a three-year contract with Kontinental Hockey League club CSKA Moscow.
Grigorenko had been an unrestricted free agent in the NHL after his contract with Colorado expired.
Grigorenko came to the NHL in 2012 as a first-round draft pick but struggled to live up to expectations during three seasons with the Buffalo Sabres and two with the Avalanche.
Canadiens acquire D Nesterov from Lightning
NEW YORK (AP) — The Montreal Canadiens have acquired defenseman Nikita Nesterov from the Tampa Bay Lightning in a deal for defenseman Jonathan Racine and a sixth-round pick in the June draft.
Nesterov had three goals and nine assists in 35 games for the Lightning this season. The 23-year-old Russian, selected by Tampa Bay in the fifth round of the 2011 draft, has eight goals and 20 assists in 119 games.
Johnson rallies Lightning in 3rd for 5-2 win over Blackhawks
CHICAGO (AP) — Tyler Johnson scored two goals 30 seconds apart early in the third period, rallying the Tampa Bay Lightning past the Chicago Blackhawks 5-2 on Tuesday night to end a three-game slide.
Brian Boyle had a goal and an assist, and Nikita Nesterov and Nikita Kucherov also scored for the Lightning, who broke loose for three goals in a 3:57 span of the third to erase a 2-1 deficit.
Red Wings’ Helm out at least 6 weeks, replaced by Bertuzzi
DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Red Wings have lost forward Darren Helm for at least six weeks because of a dislocated shoulder.
Detroit recalled winger Tyler Bertuzzi from the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins on Thursday and put Helm on long-term injured reserve.
