US. Kazakhstan advance to Davis Cup quarterfinals
The United States advanced to the Davis Cup quarterfinals after beating Serbia for the first time thanks to a four-set doubles win on Saturday.
The U.S. ran into Novak Djokovic in the previous losses, but without him Serbia was eliminated 3-0 and a day early in Nis.
Switzerland, without Roger Federer, suffered the same fate in Astana, where host Kazakhstan won 3-0 after a nearly 3 1/2-hour doubles.
US takes 2-0 lead over Serbia in 1st round of Davis Cup
Sam Querrey fought from a set down to defeat Laslo Djere and John Isner won a fifth-set tiebreaker over Dusan LaJovic to give the United States a 2-0 lead over Serbia in the first round of the Davis Cup World Group on Friday.
Querrey had 20 aces in a 6-7 (4), 6-2, 7-5, 6-4 win in the opening singles, and Isner followed with 24 aces in his 6-4, 6-7 (6), 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (4) victory.
Sock not on US Davis Cup roster to face no-Djokovic Serbia
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) — Sam Querrey, John Isner, Ryan Harrison and Steve Johnson are on the U.S. Davis Cup roster that will play at Serbia — minus Novak Djokovic — in the first round next month.
The highest-ranked American man, No. 9 Jack Sock, was not included in captain Jim Courier's team, which was announced Tuesday.
Sock, No. 16 Isner and No. 48 Steve Johnson lost in the first round at the Australian Open. No. 13 Querrey got beaten in the second round and No. 45 Harrison the third.
