FREIBURG, Germany (AP) — Second-place Borussia Moenchengladbach missed the chance to move level on points with Bundesliga leader Borussia Dortmund after losing 3-1 at Freiburg on Friday.
Moenchengladbach's night started badly when forward Nils Petersen put Freiburg ahead with a penalty in the first minute. But the visitors equalized from the penalty spot after 20 minutes through Thorgan Hazard, the younger brother of Belgium and Chelsea star Eden Hazard.
Germany calls up Emre Can after Havertz, Ruediger drop out
BERLIN (AP) — Germany coach Joachim Loew called up midfielder Emre Can for the upcoming UEFA Nations League games in the Netherlands and France after Kai Havertz and Antonio Ruediger dropped out on Monday.
Havertz has a bruised knee and needs to sit out training for the next few days, while Ruediger has groin problems, the German soccer federation said.
EPPAN, Italy (AP) — In a sign of Germany's depth of talent, Leroy Sane was left out of the defending champion's final World Cup squad on Monday.
The 22-year-old winger, who won the Premier League title with Manchester City and was voted young player of the year by the Professional Footballers' Association, didn't make the cut when Joachim Loew reduced his squad to 23 players.
MUNICH (AP) — Germany striker Sandro Wagner has announced his international retirement following his failure to be nominated in the preliminary World Cup squad.
Wagner tells Thursday's edition of the Bild daily, "For me it's clear that I do not seem to fit in with the coaching team due to my way of always being open, honest and direct."

Winless Cologne wastes 3-goal lead to lose 4-3 to Freiburg
BERLIN (AP) — Nils Petersen scored with two late penalties — one in the 90th minute and another in injury time — as Freiburg came from three goals down to beat Cologne 4-3 in the Bundesliga on Sunday.
"We were patient to the end. Football writes such stories," said Petersen, who also scored in the first half to start Freiburg's comeback. "It's bitter for Cologne. I'm sorry for the club, too."
Hamburger SV draws 0-0 at Freiburg in Bundesliga
FREIBURG, Germany (AP) — Freiburg and Hamburger SV drew 0-0 in the Bundesliga on Friday leaving both sides in or just above the relegation zone.
Freiburg striker Nils Petersen went closest for the home side when he hit the post with a header from a corner in the first half, while he also forced a good save from Christian Mathenia.
Yoric Ravet thought he'd scored for Freiburg early in the second half but the goal was ruled out for offside.
BERLIN (AP) — Borussia Dortmund will begin its German Cup defense at sixth-tier side FC Rielasingen-Arlen, while Bayern Munich starts at third-division Chemnitzer FC.
Bundesliga runner-up Leipzig was drawn in the first round Sunday against seventh-tier side Sportfreunde Dorfmerkingen from Baden-Wuerttemberg, in the southwest of the country, while Hertha Berlin faces third-division Hansa Rostock.
