Krajinovic, Khachanov reach 2nd round of Open 13
MARSEILLE, France (AP) — Eighth-seeded Serb Filip Krajinovic and ninth-seeded Russian Karen Khachanov advanced to the second round of the Open 13 on Tuesday.
Krajinovic rallied to beat Joao Sousa of Portugal 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 — with both players hitting six aces and dropping serve three times— while Khachanov had 15 aces in a 6-3, 7-6 (2) win against Ruben Bemelmans of Belgium.
Qualifier De Schepper upsets Paire at Croatia Open
UMAG, Croatia (AP) — Qualifier Kenny De Schepper upset another Frenchman, seventh-seeded Benoit Paire, to advance to the second round of the Croatia Open on Tuesday with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 win.
Paire struggled with his serve, producing a total of 11 double faults, and was broken eight times by his 148th-ranked opponent.
Eighth-seeded Jiri Vesely of the Czech Republic made the second round after a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Norbert Gombos of Slovakia.
Defending champion Kyrgios into semifinals in Marseille
MARSEILLE, France (AP) — Defending champion Nick Kyrgios made light work of Norbert Gombos to reach the Open 13 semifinals on Friday, beating the Slovakian qualifier 6-3, 6-3 in less than an hour.
The third-seeded Australian hit 15 aces and lost just six points on his serve to set up a first career meeting against second-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
Mahut beats 5th-seeded Zverev, while 6th-seeded Gasquet wins
MARSEILLE, France (AP) — French veteran Nicolas Mahut beat German teen Alexander Zverev 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5) to reach the second round of the Open 13 on Tuesday.
The 35-year-old Mahut withstood 10 aces from the 19-year-old Zverev, seeded fifth and considered one of the rising stars of tennis. Both players dropped serve once in the second set. Mahut next plays Slovakian qualifier Norbert Gombos.
