Miguel Angel Jimenez wins Chubb Classic
NAPLES, Fla. (AP) — Miguel Angel Jimenez won the Chubb Classic on Sunday for his seventh PGA Tour Champions title, beating Bernhard Langer and Olin Browne with a 5-foot par putt on the first hole of a playoff.
Jimenez closed with a 5-under 66 at The Classics at Lely Resort to match Langer and Browne at 13-under 200.
Langer birdies 18th for share of lead in playoff opener
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Bernhard Langer birdied the par-5 18th for a 5-under 67 and a share of the first-round lead Friday in the Dominion Energy Charity Classic, the first event in the PGA Tour Champions' Charles Schwab Cup Playoffs.
Seeking an unprecedented fifth Schwab Cup and fourth in a row, the 60-year-old Langer leads the season standings and has a tour-high five victories this season.
McCarron takes first-round lead at PGA Tour Champions
PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Scott McCarron shot an 8-under 63 to take a one-stroke lead Friday after the first round of the PGA Tour Champions' Pure Insurance Championship.
McCarron had seven birdies and an eagle to go along with a bogey to set a new record on the par-71 Poppy Hills course. He broke the previous mark set by Jonathan De Los Reyes in 2015 and matched later that year by Olin Browne at this event.
Kirk Triplett’s 62 paces big scoring day at U.S. Senior Open
PEABODY — Salem Country Club is easing the competitors of the 38th U.S. Senior Open into the tournament.
The contours of the greens were as tricky as advertised but also soft as sponges following Tuesday’s rain and, combined with the lack of a breeze, allowed the players to take dead aim at the flagstick yesterday.
The result was 40 of the 156 players in the field in red numbers.
‘Spooky’ in Salem: Triplett’s 62 ties US Senior Open record
PEABODY, Mass. (AP) — The witch on her broomstick that graces the Salem Country Club logo could hardly concoct a spell so scary as the blood-red scoreboard from the first round of the U.S. Senior Open.
On a day that saw 40 players break par, Kirk Triplett matched the PGA Champions Tour major record with an 8-under 62 on Thursday to take a one-stroke leader over Olin Browne. The last time the Senior Open was played at the Donald Ross course, in 2011, winner Bruce Fleischer finished at even par.
A new cast of characters at top of US Open
ERIN, Wis. (AP) — Don't be alarmed to see a few names atop the leaderboard at the U.S. Open that are familiar only to hard-core golf fans.
It was only last year at Oakmont that Andrew Landry, who had to make it through two stages of qualifying to get into his first U.S. Open, shared the 36-hole lead with Dustin Johnson. Billy Horschel was tied for the 36-hole lead at Merion. Olin Browne and Jason Gore were part of a 36-hole tie at Pinehurst No. 2.
Fred Couples stroke back in PGA Champions Tour event
BOCA RATON, Fla. (AP) — Fred Couples birdied the final two holes Saturday to pull within a stroke of the leaders in the PGA Champions Tour's Allianz Championship.
The 57-year-old Couples shot a 7-under 65 to reach 11-under 133 on The Old Course at Broken Sound.
Doug Garwood, Joe Durant, Scott McCarron and first-round leader Olin Browne shared the top spot, all birdieing the par-5 18th. Garwood shot 64, Durant 65, McCarron 66, and Browne 69. Tom Pernice Jr. had a 64 to match Couples at 11 under.
Olin Browne shoots 63 to take PGA Champions Tour lead
BOCA RATON, Fla. (AP) — Olin Browne had eight birdies in a nine-hole stretch and shot a 9-under 63 on Friday to take the first-round lead in the PGA Champions Tour's Allianz Championship.
John Mallinger leads Pebble Beach Invitational
PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (AP) — John Mallinger shot a 4-under 68 on Friday at Spanish Bay to take a four-stroke lead in the Pebble Beach Invitational.
The Wen.com Tour player had a 9-under 135 total after opening with a 67 on Thursday at Pebble Beach. He will play Spyglass Hill in Saturday and finish at Pebble Beach on Sunday.
