LONDON (AP) — The Latest on the British Academy Film Awards (all times local):
Alfonso Cuaron's lyrical "Roma" has been named best picture at the British Academy Film Awards.
It bested "The Favourite," which bookies had favored to win the top prize at Britain's equivalent of the Oscars.
Cuaron thanked Netflix for backing "a black and white film about a domestic worker" that is not in English.

‘The Favourite’ leads race for British Academy Film Awards
LONDON (AP) — Wickedly funny royal comedy-drama "The Favourite" lived up to its name Wednesday, leading the race for the British Academy Film Awards.
Yorgos Lanthimos' film received 12 nominations for the U.K. equivalent of the Oscars, including best film, best director and best actress, for Olivia Colman. Colman won a Golden Globe on Sunday for her performance as Britain's 18th-century Queen Anne.

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) — Glenn Close couldn't help but think of her mother at Sunday's Golden Globes when she won best actress in a film drama for playing a woman forced into the shadows by her husband's success in "The Wife."
Through tears, Close noted her mother's similarities with her character in the film, who sets aside her own writing career to help her husband win a Nobel Prize in literature.
Film critics choose ‘The Rider’ as best picture of 2018
NEW YORK (AP) — The National Society of Film Critics on Saturday chose Chloe Zhao's low-budget debut feature, "The Rider," as best picture of 2018.
Director Alfonso Cuaron's black-and-white "Roma" period piece set in modern Mexico won the most awards — as best picture runner-up, best foreign-language film and for best cinematography. Cuaron also got the award for best director.
Hollywood kicks off 2019 awards season in Palm Springs
PALM SPRINGS, California (AP) — Bradley Cooper, Spike Lee, Olivia Colman and other Oscar contenders kicked off Hollywood's 2019 awards season with an emotional trip to the desert city of Palm Springs.
The Palm Springs International Film Festival gala was a familiar setting for Cooper, who received director of the year honors on Thursday. He had presented the same trophy to his "Silver Linings Playbook" director David O. Russell six years ago, and filmed key "A Star is Born" scenes in the area.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — "The Favourite" leads the field of films with 14 nominations for the 24th annual Critics' Choice Awards.
"Black Panther" was close behind with 12 nominations. Three TV series are tied with five nominations each.
The Broadcast Film Critics Association and the Broadcast Television Journalists Association announced the nominees Monday.

The Independent Filmmaker Project announced nominations for the 28th annual IFP Gotham Awards on Thursday.
The period drama "The Favourite" snagged two nominations and its actresses, Olivia Colman, Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz, will receive a special jury prize for their performances.

ROME (AP) — "Roma," Alfonso Cuaron's intimate, black-and-white portrait of the women who raised him in Mexico City's turbulent 1970s, has won the top prize at the 75th Venice Film Festival.
Cuaron accepted the Leone d'Oro on Saturday, which he said was the birthday of the woman who inspired the lead character Cleo, a young domestic worker with her own troubles amid political strife in the city's Roma neighborhood.

New ruler: Olivia Colman to take the throne in ‘The Crown’
LONDON (AP) — A new royal head is about to wear "The Crown."
Actress Olivia Colman will play Queen Elizabeth II for the third and fourth seasons of the award-winning Netflix series about the British monarch's long reign.
Publicists for the show confirmed Friday that Colman will star, taking over from Claire Foy.
