The team placed Maatta on the injured list on Tuesday. The 24-year-old played just 4:57 in Monday night's 4-1 win over Philadelphia before leaving the game. He did not return.
Maatta has one goal and 12 assists in 55 games this season for Pittsburgh. The Penguins begin a three-game homestand on Wednesday night when they face Edmonton.

Anyone who has played with Marc-Andre Fleury can tell he's dialed in by watching his mannerisms.
Last year, he rubbed the shaft of his stick after making a save with it on Alex Ovechkin. This year, he continued a career-long tradition of rubbing the post as a sign of appreciation for keeping a puck out.
"That's when you know he's in the zone," Pittsburgh defenseman Olli Maatta said.
Breakfast with Benz: Hyped up yet? Here’s what you need to get ready for Penguins-Flyers
It's the day we've been waiting for since Olli Maatta and Justin Schultz stopped pounding beers on the parade route.

There can be no three-peat without a spot in the tournament. The Penguins have attained that first achievement.
After a Florida Panthers loss at the Boston Bruins earlier in the day set the table, the Penguins clinched a playoff berth for a franchise-record 12th consecutive season with a 5-2 win against the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday night. It is the longest active streak in the NHL.

Maatta’s third-period goal leads Penguins past Maple Leafs
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Olli Maatta has played five seasons with Evgeni Malkin and he's not sure he's ever seen his teammate play as well as he is right now.
Maatta scored the tiebreaking goal in the third period and Malkin had three points to lead the Pittsburgh Penguins to a 5-3 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday night.
It's as basic as any Pittsburgh holiday tradition.
The Penguins released their annual holiday card/video/movie before Thursday's game against the Columbus Blue Jackets at PPG Paints Arena.
This year's version featured Sidney Crosby starring as Ralphie in "A Christmas Story."

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Ron Hainsey arrived in Pittsburgh from Carolina a month ago on the verge of reaching the playoffs for the first time in his 14-year career.
The durable defenseman found an odd but perhaps apt way to fit in with his new team: He got hurt. Ten games into his tenure with the Penguins, Hainsey went down with an upper-body injury to join an increasingly long line of familiar faces watching in suits from the press box rather than wearing sweaters on the bench.
