DALLAS (AP) — A renowned opera singer and University of Michigan professor is in police custody on allegations that he and his husband in 2010 sexually assaulted a singer in Houston.
Countertenor David Daniels and his spouse, William A. Scott Walters, were arrested Tuesday in Ann Arbor, Michigan, on Texas warrants charging each of them with sexual assault of an adult. A Houston police spokesman declined to comment on the charges Wednesday.

Met Opera offers free tickets to federal employees
NEW YORK (AP) — Federal government employees affected by the government shutdown can get some free entertainment in New York.
The Metropolitan Opera says it is offering free tickets to people with government IDs from Saturday through the end of the month. A pair of tickets per performance can be reserved in advance by telephone or in person at the Met box office.

German opera singer Theo Adam dies at 92
BERLIN (AP) — Theo Adam, a German opera singer renowned for his Wagner roles, has died. He was 92.
German news agency dpa quoted Adam's family Friday confirming that the bass-baritone died Thursday at a care home in his hometown of Dresden.
Adam made his debut at the Staatsoper Dresden in 1949 before joining East Germany's Berlin State Opera in 1952.

ROME (AP) — Rome's opera house on Friday defended hiring conductor Daniele Gatti, who was fired by an Amsterdam-based orchestra last summer over sexual misconduct allegations.
Teatro dell'Opera di Roma spokesman Renato Bossa said that the theater signed Gatti this week to a contract running through December 2021 as musical director because, in a country with "rule of law, one is innocent until a trial proves otherwise." Still, Bossa termed the allegations "certainly very grave."

San Francisco Opera removes singer accused of sex assault
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The San Francisco Opera says it has removed countertenor David Daniels from an upcoming production of Handel's "Orlando" due to sexual assault allegations against the singer.
Daniels was sued last month by a student at the University of Michigan, where the singer is a professor, for sexual assault.
The San Francisco Opera on Thursday cited the lawsuit and allegations against Daniels as the reason for his removal from the June 2019 production. No replacement has been named.
Nico Muhly scores with second commission from Met
NEW YORK (AP) — Ten years ago at age 27, Nico Muhly became the youngest composer ever to have a piece commissioned by the Metropolitan Opera.

David Daniels released a statement Wednesday saying the accusations "are both false and malicious," and that he and the "individual mentioned" in the complaint never had a physical relationship.

DETROIT (AP) — A lawsuit alleging sexual assault has been filed against opera singer David Daniels, who is also a University of Michigan professor.
A student at the university claims in the lawsuit in U.S. District Court that Daniels groped him, sent sexual photos and videos of himself, and requested sexual photos and videos of the student in return.
The lawsuit also alleges that Daniels served the student alcohol, gave him sleep medication and touched him sexually.

CHICAGO (AP) — The Lyric Opera of Chicago says striking musicians have approved a multiyear labor deal and the season will resume Wednesday.
A statement released by the music company Sunday night says members of the Chicago Federation of Musicians Local 10-208 ratified the agreement with Lyric Opera extending through the 2020-21 season. A tentative deal was reached Saturday.
The Lyric Opera's 64th season was disrupted Tuesday when musicians walked off the job.
Kathleen Turner to make Metropolitan Opera debut
NEW YORK (AP) — One of acting's most distinctive voices will make an unexpected Metropolitan Opera debut.
Kathleen Turner, known for words that smoke rather than shimmer, is joining the cast of Gaetano Donizetti's "The Daughter of the Regiment" in the non-singing role of the Duchess of Krakenthorp, the Met said Thursday.
