Former Oregon State Police spokesman convicted of harassment
BEND, Ore. (AP) — A former public information officer for the Oregon State Police has pleaded guilty to one count of harassment involving his estranged wife.
The Deschutes County District Attorney's Office said Tuesday that a second count of harassment against Capt. Bill Fugate was dismissed as a result of the plea deal.
He was sentenced to two days in jail, two years of probation and he must take a counseling course.
Fiery crash kills 2 in Oregon, closes highway
SALEM, Ore. (AP) — Two trucks collided on an icy highway in western Oregon before dawn, killing both drivers and triggering a fire.
The Oregon State Police said the collision happened about 5:20 a.m. Monday on Highway 18 on a recently opened Newberg-Dundee bypass. Photos sent by the state police showed flames across the highway and firefighters on the scene.
Almost five hours later, the stretch of highway remained closed as workers cleaned up spilled diesel fuel.

ROSEBURG, Ore. (AP) — Oregon State Police Fish and Wildlife officers are seeking information on the person or people who shot and killed an adult bald eagle in Douglas County.

OSP said Thursday the eagle was found shot in the neck with a small caliber rifle from Lower Cow Creek Road approximately 2 miles south of Doe Creek Road. The shooting happened sometime in November.

Increased highway speeds in rural Oregon mean more deaths
PENDLETON, Ore. (AP) — It started almost as soon as the Oregon Department of Transportation began posting the new signs on March 1, 2016.
For the first time in decades, the state was raising speed limits on some of eastern and central Oregon's most traveled highways. The Eastern Oregon section of Interstate 84 and Interstate 82 were now 70 miles per hour. Nearly the entire length of Highway 97 and several other segments of highway in the region were bumped up to 65 miles per hour.

Man found guilty in 1996 rape due to DNA testing
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — An Oregon man has been convicted of raping a woman in a park more than two decades ago because of a statewide push to conduct DNA tests on a backlog of thousands of rape kits, authorities said.
Jihad Eldeen Moore Jr., 67, was found guilty of first-degree rape and sodomy by a Portland judge on Thursday, the same day the Oregon State Police announced it had eliminated its backlog of untested kits.

3 killed, 1 injured in head-on collision in McMinnville
MCMINNVILLE, Ore. (AP) — Oregon State Police say three people were killed and another person was seriously hurt in a head-on collision on a highway southwest of Portland.
State Police says an 18-year-old Joseph Hawkins, of Salem, was killed in the crash along Highway 18 near McMinnville Saturday afternoon.
Police said Sunday that the preliminary investigation shows Hawkins was driving alone, heading eastbound, when he crossed into westbound lanes and hit a Subaru Legacy.

Man eludes police by running into cornfield
HERMISTON, Ore. (AP) — A man fleeing from police after a high-speed car chase ran into a 150-acre (61-hectare) cornfield and managed to escape after eluding authorities for five hours.
The Oregon State Police said Thursday that officers from several agencies formed a perimeter around the field near Hermiston and spotted the man several times in the corn.
They did not capture him despite using a drone and a police tracking dog.

8 dead in two-car collision in rural Oregon
BURNS, Ore. (AP) — A collision in rural Oregon that killed eight people happened when the driver of one SUV crossed the centerline and crashed into another SUV carrying seven people.
The Oregon State Police said Tuesday that both cars were Toyota 4 Runners and all the victims died at the scene Monday morning.
The 1999 Toyota was occupied only by the driver and veered into the eastbound lane of Oregon Route 78 southeast of the small town of Burns.

Oregon State Police Sgt. Jeff Proulx said Monday that 28-year-old Matthew Cortez and 28-year-old Jesse Swift were both from Cave Junction.
Troopers from the Grants Pass office responded early Thursday to a report of two deceased men who were thought to have been killed in a traffic crash. The troopers determined the men had been shot.
Seaside police fatally shoot suspect near RV park
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Authorities say a police officer fatally shot a suspect at an RV park in the coastal town of Seaside, Oregon.
City spokesman say Jon Rahl says officers were dispatched Tuesday afternoon on a report of a person with a gun. The shots were fired during an ensuing confrontation.
