OSWEGO, N.Y. (AP) — An upstate New York man who stabbed another man in the head with a screwdriver has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.
The Post-Standard of Syracuse reports 34-year-old Steven Haynes, of Oswego, was sentenced this week in Oswego County Court after pleading guilty to attempted second-degree murder.

Trump approves disaster aid for Lake Ontario flooding
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Federal recovery aid will be coming to Lake Ontario shoreline communities after President Donald Trump issued a major disaster declaration for spring and summer flooding.
The declaration issued Tuesday includes Niagara, Orleans, Wayne, Oswego, Jefferson and St. Lawrence counties. It omits two lakefront counties, Monroe and Cayuga, but says additional designations could be added later if warranted.
Leaky fuel rods shut down nuclear plant for several days
OSWEGO, N.Y. (AP) — Federal regulators say operators of the FitzPatrick Nuclear Power Plant along Lake Ontario are trying to figure out why several fuel rods are leaking radiation.

21 properties tabbed for state, national historic registers
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — The upstate cemetery where human rights pioneers Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony are buried is among the New York properties recommended for inclusion on the State and National Registers of Historic Places.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Friday that the state Board for Historic Preservation recommended adding 21 properties, resources and districts to the registers. The Democrat says the list reflects the state's diverse culture and rich heritage.
Family says woman, 55, beaten in central NY home has died
OSWEGO, N.Y. (AP) — The family of a central New York woman allegedly beaten by a homeless man says she has died from her injuries.
Police in Oswego say they were called to a home on the morning of Oct. 1 for a report of an unresponsive 55-year-old woman. Officials say she had suffered life-threatening injuries after being struck multiple times.
Police say she was taken to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse and placed on life support.
Central NY pet cat shot in eye with BB, reward offered
OSWEGO, N.Y. (AP) — The Oswego County Humane Society is offering a $1,000 reward to help catch the person who shot a cat with a BB gun.
Owner Robert Alexander tells The Post-Standard of Syracuse that his 8-year-old cat, named Waldo, was blinded in one eye by the attack and has limited sight in the other.
Body of Pennsylvania fisherman recovered from Lake Ontario
SCRIBA, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities say they've recovered the body of a Pennsylvania man who died when his boat sank on Lake Ontario last weekend.
The Oswego County Sheriff's Office says 56-year-old Mark Deiter, of Walnutport in eastern Pennsylvania, was fishing with two other people when their 23-foot motor vessel began taking on water around 5:30 p.m. Saturday about a mile off the town of Scriba (SKREYE'-buh) shore.
10-year-old girl beaten, dragged by car in NY; 4 charged
ALBION, N.Y. (AP) — A 10-year-old girl who was beaten repeatedly, forced to run with heavy packs and dragged behind a car escaped her tormentors as they slept to ask a neighbor for help, police in central New York said Friday.
OSWEGO — Dora Sue Rodgers, 75, of Oswego passed away Aug. 15, 2017 at Seasons Hospice in Naperville.
Sue was born Aug. 28, 1941 in West Salem, to Thomas Eugene (Gene) and Dorothy Bratton Rodgers of Allendale.
She was a graduate of Vincennes University and Southern Illinois University. Sue taught three years at Allendale High School and at Beecher High School for 31 years.
Lawsuit: Santa’s Workshop owner demanded sex for lower rents
OSWEGO, N.Y. (AP) — The owner of an amusement park named Santa's Workshop is being sued by six women who claim he demanded sex in exchange for lower rents at his central New York properties.
The lawsuit filed earlier this month in federal court in Syracuse accuses Douglas Waterbury, of Oswego, of sexually harassing the women starting in 2012. They claim he demanded sex in return for lower rents and maintenance work at their apartments.

PHELPS, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities say a 69-year-old man is recovering from burns suffered when fuel spilled inside his car at an upstate New York racetrack.
The Ontario County Sheriff's Office says 69-year-old Michael Humphrey, of Oswego, had just completed a practice session at Paradise Speedway in the town of Phelps on Saturday when his micro-sprint car stalled, then burst into flames.
Other racers and fans ran to the car, put out the fire and pulled Humphrey out of the vehicle.
NEWBURGH, N.Y. (AP) — Replicas of two of Christopher Columbus' ships are sailing up New York's Hudson River and will be open to public tours this month.

Troopers say a 47-year-old woman from Red Creek was driving east on state Route 3 in the Oswego County town of Hannibal around 9 p.m. Saturday when she hit a person who was crossing the road a half mile west of county Route 7.
The pedestrian, identified as Patrick J. Boyzuck II, of Oswego, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Sports Notebook: Honkers’ play-by-play man returns
Play-by-play radio broadcaster Michael Keeley is returning to call Rochester Honkers games again for the 2017 season.
Keeley will be entering his second season with the Honkers. He did the broadcasts for all 72 games of the 2016 season.

OSWEGO, N.Y. (AP) — A former judge for a central New York town has been sentenced to prison time for an alcohol-related crash that killed one person and injured three others.
The Post-Standard of Syracuse reports (http://bit.ly/2ijlLIY ) 52-year-old Douglas Horton of the Oswego County town of Mexico was sentenced earlier this week to two to six years in state prison.
Horton pleaded guilty in October to first degree vehicle-manslaughter.
Two-car crash kills central New York teenager
SCHROEPPEL, N.Y. (AP) — New York State Police say an 18-year-old woman has been killed in a two-car collision in central New York.
Troopers say a northbound vehicle crossed the center line on a two-lane highway in rural Oswego County and hit another vehicle around 9:30 a.m. Thursday. The crash killed Morgan Stoutenger of Phoenix, New York. She was a front-seat passenger in the northbound car driven by 18-year-old Jakob Robinson, also of Phoenix.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — The National Weather Service has issued lake effect snow warnings for parts of western and central New York where up to 3 feet of snow could fall by the weekend.
The warnings are in effect for a 48-hour period starting 6 a.m. Thursday for Jefferson, Oswego and Lewis counties near the eastern end of Lake Ontario and for Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, southern Erie and Wyoming counties in western New York.

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — The 144-year-old shipwreck of a rare sailing vessel that typically wasn't used for long voyages on the Great Lakes has been found in deep water off Lake Ontario's New York shore, according to two underwater explorers.
Western New York-based explorers Jim Kennard and Roger Pawlowski announced Friday that they identified the wreck as the Black Duck in September, three years after initially coming across it while using side-scan sonar in 350 feet of water off Oswego, New York.
