Isner gets another shot at Opelka in New York Open semis
UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) — John Isner advanced to the semifinals of the New York Open, where he will face the player who knocked him out of the Australian Open.
The top-seeded Isner beat No. 7 seed Jordan Thompson of Australia, 6-4, 6-1 on Friday night. He will play fellow American Reilly Opelka, a 6-3, 6-4 winner over Spain's Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.
Isner wins at New York Open for 1st victory of 2019
UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) — John Isner snapped a six-match losing streak, beating Bernard Tomic 7-6 (7), 6-4 on Wednesday in the second round of the New York Open.
The top-seeded American needed six match points to finish off Tomic for his first victory since last year's Paris Masters. He followed that tournament by dropping all three matches in his first appearance at the season-ending ATP Finals and was 0-2 to start 2019, including a first-round loss at the Australian Open.
Lorenzi beats Sandgren in 1st round of New York Open
UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) — Paolo Lorenzi of Italy outlasted eighth-seeded American Tennys Sandgren 7-6 (4), 6-7 (4), 6-4 on Monday in the first round of the New York Open.
Sandgren was playing for the first time since the Australian Open. He has lost both matches since winning the ASB Classic in January for his first ATP title.
Also, Australian Bernard Tomic beat Lukas Lacko of Slovakia, 6-4, 6-2. He will next face top-seeded John Isner of the U.S.
GENOA, Italy (AP) — Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut beat Fabio Fognini and Simone Bolelli 6-4, 6-3, 6-1 for France to lead Italy 2-1 in the Davis Cup quarterfinals on Saturday.
Herbert's and Mahut's constant net rushing proved too much to handle for the Italian pair, which fell apart late in the opening set.
Fognini missed an easy overhead smash and Bolelli served consecutive double faults when Herbert and Mahut broke to take the first set.
GENOA, Italy (AP) — Without the injured Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Lucas Pouille will face Andreas Seppi to open France's visit to Italy in the Davis Cup quarterfinals.
The 11th-ranked Pouille has a 4-3 record in the Davis Cup and won the decisive match over Belgium's Steve Darcis in last season's final.
It will be the first meeting between Pouille and Seppi.
Japan and Italy even at 1-1 in Davis Cup
MORIOKA, Japan (AP) — Yuichi Sugita evened the score for Japan to 1-1 by beating Andreas Seppi of Italy 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (1) Friday in the first round of the Davis Cup.
Fabio Fognini beat Taro Daniel 6-4, 3-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the first match.
In Saturday's doubles, Japan will send Yasutaka Uchiyama and Ben McLachlan to face Simone Bolelli and Paolo Lorenzi. Last week, McLachlan reached the men's doubles semifinals at the Australian Open.

Third-seeded Lorenzi won the opening set and led 4-2 in the second before going down 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-1 against Joao Sousa of Portugal.
Last year at the clay-court event in the Austrian Alps, the Italian became the oldest first-time winner of an ATP event at 34 years, seven months.
KITZBUEHEL, Austria (AP) — Austrian qualifier Sebastian Ofner advanced to the second round of the Generali Open after 2016 finalist Nikoloz Basilashvili pulled out in the second set of their match on Monday.
The Georgian lost the first set 7-5 and trailed 3-0 in the second. The reason for his withdrawal wasn't immediately clear.
Last year Basilashvili became the first male player from Georgia to reach a tour final, which he lost to Paolo Lorenzi of Italy.
Lorenzi, Rublev advance to final at Croatia Open
UMAG, Croatia (AP) — Fourth-seeded Paolo Lorenzi of Italy and lucky loser Andrey Rublev of Russia reached the final of the Croatia Open on Saturday.
In an all-Italian semifinal, Lorenzi knocked out Alessandro Giannessi 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. Lorenzi seeks his second ATP title.
After winning the first set, Lorenzi wasted a 4-2 lead in the second. He enjoyed a more commanding lead in the decisive set at 5-2 and waltzed in.
HALLE, Germany (AP) — Robin Haase upset second-seeded Dominic Thiem 6-3, 7-6 (7) in the second round of the Gerry Weber Open on Wednesday.
The 42nd-ranked Haase saved four of five break points as he advanced to the quarterfinals at the grass-court tournament. The Dutchman next faces Richard Gasquet of France, who defeated Australia's Bernard Tomic 6-3, 6-3.
Fourth-seeded Alexander Zverev maintained his good form with a 6-3, 6-4 defeat of German compatriot and 2011 champion Philipp Kohlschreiber.
Coric downs No. 2 seed to reach semis in Morocco
MARRAKECH, Morocco (AP) — Borna Coric of Croatia rallied past second-seeded Albert Ramos-Vinolas of Spain 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 to reach the semifinals of the Grand Prix Hassan II on Friday.
Coric, advancing to his first ATP semifinal since this clay event last year, broke Ramos-Vinolas three times to prevail in 2 1/2 hours.
To reach the final again, the 20-year-old Coric will have to get past Jiri Vesely, who defeated No. 5 seed Paolo Lorenzi 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5).
Top-seeded Dimitrov loses opening match in Morocco
MARRAKECH, Morocco (AP) — Top-seeded Grigor Dimitrov lost his opening match at the Grand Prix Hassan II, bowing out against veteran Tommy Robredo 6-4, 1-6, 6-1 on Thursday.
The 34-year-old Robredo, now ranked 385th, saved seven of nine break points and converted all three chances he got to win on Dimitrov's serve.
Robredo will face Benoit Paire in his first tour-level quarterfinal match since he reached the semifinals at Shenzhen Open in 2015. Paire beat Radu Albot 6-2, 6-2.
Coric into quarterfinals after scare in Morocco
MARRAKECH, Morocco (AP) — Last year's finalist Borna Coric saved eight break points to beat local wild card Reda El Amrani and reach the quarterfinals at the Grand Prix Hassan II on Wednesday.
Ranked 667th in the world, El Amrani hit six aces and broke Coric three times but struggled with his own serve and eventually lost 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (5) in more than 2 ½ hours.
CHARLEROI, Belgium (AP) — Italy staved off losing to Belgium in the Davis Cup quarterfinals by winning the doubles on Saturday.
Simone Bolelli and Andreas Seppi defeated Ruben Bemelmans and Jons De Loore 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (6) in nearly four hours.
Belgium won both singles on Friday, and can clinch the tie on Sunday in the first reverse singles, when David Goffin plays Paolo Lorenzi. Goffin won their only previous match in 2014.
Darcis faces Lorenzi in opening singles in Davis Cup
CHARLEROI, Belgium (AP) — Steve Darcis will face Paolo Lorenzi in Friday's opening singles match when Belgium hosts Italy in the Davis Cup quarterfinals.
Darcis will be going for his 21st win in Davis Cup singles when play gets underway on indoor hard courts at the Spiroudome de Charleroi. But Lorenzi beat him in their only previous meeting, on a similar surface two years ago in Metz.
Estrella Burgos wins again at Ecuador Open
QUITO, Ecuador (AP) — Victor Estrella Burgos won his third straight title at the Ecuador Open, defeating Paolo Lorenzi 6-7 (2), 7-5, 7-6 (6) Sunday.
Sunday's title was the third in ATP singles for the unseeded Dominican, and they've all come on clay in Quito.
The third-seeded Lorenzi was trying for his second ATP singles title after winning last year on clay in Kitzbuehl, Austria.
Nishikori, Del Potro advance easily at Swiss Indoors
BASEL, Switzerland (AP) — Kei Nishikori and Juan Martin del Potro won in straight sets at the Swiss Indoors on Wednesday to stay on course for a quarterfinals meeting.
Third-seeded Nishikori of Japan eased past Paolo Lorenzi of Italy 7-6 (3), 6-2 in a second round match.
Nishikori did not take any of his six break point chances in an error-strewn first set, and then upped his play in the second against the 38th-ranked Lorenzi.
Murray, Nadal advance to 2nd round at China Open
BEIJING (AP) — Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray advanced to the second round of the China Open with straight-set wins Tuesday in back-to-back matches on center court.
Nadal needed little more than an hour to beat Paolo Lorenzi 6-1, 6-1, fending off two break points as he took time to get his serve under control in the first set.
The 2005 China Open champion, seeded second in Beijing, improved his first-service percentage from 42 to 85 in the second set.
