Clemson WR Renfrow wins Burslworth Trophy, honoring walk-ons
SPRINGDALE, Ark. (AP) — Clemson wide receiver Hunter Renfrow has won the Burlsworth Trophy, which goes to the top college football who began his career as a walk-on.
Renfrow was chosen over finalists California running back Patrick Laird and Wyoming safety Marcus Epps.

The Golden Bears were still searching for their first conference win and had slumped with three straight losses.
Seniors talked about how much the season meant to them, said defensive end Tevin Paul. The players took the talk to heart.
Defense keys California’s 24-17 win over North Carolina
BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) — Rotating three quarterbacks had mixed results for California in its season-opening win over North Carolina.
The Golden Bears defense that forced four interceptions and only allowed a field goal through three quarters more than made up for it.
Patrick Laird rushed for one touchdown and caught another, Cal's defense took advantage of a rocky outing from North Carolina quarterback Nathan Elliott, and the Bears held off the Tar Heels 24-17 on Saturday.

BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) — Patrick Laird has come a long way since arriving at California four years ago as a walk-on running back at the bottom of the depth chart for the Golden Bears.
"I was seventh," he said. "It was a list of running backs and I was at the bottom. It wasn't in alphabetical order."

BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) — The busiest afternoon of Patrick Laird's season also turned out to be the best of his career and the most productive by any California running back in nearly a decade.
On a day when the Golden Bears needed it to inch closer to bowl eligibility, too.
Laird rushed for 214 yards on 33 carries — both career-highs — and quarterback Ross Bowers passed for two touchdowns, helping California hold off Oregon State 37-23 on Saturday.
Defensive end Nnamdi Oguayo returns to Washington State for game against Cal; Isaac Dotson, Nate DeRider out
BERKELEY, Calif. – Defensive end Nnamdi Oguayo is back in the fold for Washington State, but inside linebackers Isaac Dotson and Nate DeRider didn’t make the trip to the Bay Area for tonight’s game against Cal.
Oguayo, who’s been dealing with an unspecified injury, didn’t travel with the Cougars to Oregon last week and missed WSU’s game against USC. Sophomore Derek Moore started in his place both games.
