49ers, Cardinals match ugly 1-6 records in NFC West game
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — One thing for certain about Sunday's game between the San Francisco 49ers and Arizona Cardinals: No team in the NFL will have a worse record than the team that loses this one.
The 49ers and Cardinals stagger into the game at 1-6. San Francisco has lost five in a row since its lone win of the season, a victory over Detroit on Sept. 16, back before quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo went down with a season-ending knee injury.
Arizona's lone win came at San Francisco on Oct. 7.
Patrick Peterson vows to help Cardinals for ‘years to come’
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Three-time All-Pro cornerback Patrick Peterson backed off his request to be traded from the Arizona Cardinals, saying "it came at a bad time and I was just frustrated" about how badly the season has gone when he made it.
"Honestly I don't really want to dwell on the situation on what happened. I said what I said," Peterson said after practice Wednesday. "The news came out Monday. It is what it is. It's business. We're moving forward."
Coach says Cardinals will not trade Peterson, despite report
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Embattled first-year coach Steve Wilks emphatically said the Arizona Cardinals are not going to trade star cornerback Patrick Peterson, who at 28 years old should be in the prime of his career.
Wilks' comment Monday came moments after a report via Twitter that said Peterson had asked the Cardinals to trade him by the Oct. 30 deadline.
"We're not trading Patrick," Wilks said. "That's out of the question."
Big-talking Jalen Ramsey tops AP’s list of NFL cornerbacks
Jalen Ramsey backs up his big talk with big plays.
Now the Jacksonville cornerback can crow about something else.
Ramsey was the overwhelming choice as the NFL's top cornerback by a panel of 10 football writers for The Associated Press. The All-Pro received eight first-place votes in balloting released Friday.
Gurley gets top RB spot in AP rankings with Bell still out
The role and value of the running back in the NFL has evolved as much as any position over the past decade, with a league-wide trend favoring versatile players who can contribute equally to the passing attack as to the ground game.
Todd Gurley embodies the postmodern ball carrier as well as anyone.
Peterson, Cards take 27-3 preseason win as Cowboys stars sit
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Patrick Peterson hasn't faced a starting quarterback in the preseason.
The three-time All-Pro cornerback for the Arizona Cardinals is getting himself in regular-season form anyway.
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — For now anyway, Jamar Taylor seems the odds-on favorite to win the cornerback job opposite Patrick Peterson, a chore that's loaded with action since that's the direction most opponents decide to throw.
Last week, the Arizona Cardinals sent a 2020 sixth-round draft pick to Cleveland in exchange for Taylor, who started 29 games for the Browns the past two seasons.
Cardinals release cornerback Marcus Williams
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — The Cardinals have released cornerback Marcus Williams.
Monday's move comes after the team acquired cornerback Jamar Taylor in a trade with the Cleveland Browns.
Taylor enters summer workouts as the favorite to win the starting cornerback spot opposite Patrick Peterson.
CLEVELAND (AP) — Jamar Taylor's trade to Arizona is official.
Cleveland traded another of their starting quarterbacks to the Cardinals on Saturday for a sixth-round draft pick in 2020. The teams agreed to the swap on Friday and had to work out final details before it was announced.
The Browns previously shopped Taylor and finally worked out a deal with the Cardinals, who will likely start him opposite star Patrick Peterson.
PHOENIX (AP) — The Arizona Cardinals are finalizing a trade that would bring cornerback Jamar Taylor from the Cleveland Browns, two people with knowledge of the situation said Friday.
The people, who sought anonymity because the trade had not been officially announced, said the deal was expected to be completed Friday.
The trade would help fill a significant need for the Cardinals — a cornerback to play opposite Patrick Peterson. The Browns would receive a sixth-round draft pick.
Coach: Fitzgerald says he’ll be back for 2018 season
PHOENIX (AP) — No. 11 is coming back for the Arizona Cardinals.
New Arizona coach Steve Wilks says wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald — arguably the most popular and certainly the most prolific player to don a Cardinals uniform — has told him he'll return for a 15th NFL season.
Wilks made the comment Thursday in an interview on the "Doug & Wolf" sports talk radio show. Wilks says Fitzgerald told him of his decision in a conversation Wednesday night.
LAKE FOREST, Ill. — Wednesday at Halas Hall was a day for Chicago Bears coaches and players to talk about Pro Bowl snubs and once again . . . injuries.
There was nothing stunning about the NFC and AFC Pro Bowl teams announced Tuesday night but it had to be disappointing for Akiem Hicks, Jordan Howard and Kyle Fuller.
The Lions will be represented by cornerback Darius Slay in the 2018 Pro Bowl. He was the team's lone player selected for the annual all-star game, which takes place Jan. 28 in Orlando, Fla.
Slay, who leads the NFL with seven interceptions, will be a reserve for the NFC squad. Minnesota's Xavier Rhodes and Arizona's Patrick Peterson have been named the conference's starting cornerbacks.
Several Lions players have been named alternates at their positions, including quarterback Matthew Stafford.

Rolling Rams face Arizona, look to solidify NFC West lead
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Five weeks ago in London, the Los Angeles Rams beat the Arizona Cardinals 33-0 , the biggest Rams winning margin in the history of the long series.
Now the Rams (8-3) roll into the desert looking to solidify their spot atop the NFC West against the Cardinals (5-6), who are coming off their best win of the season, 27-24 over Jacksonville in Glendale.
Cardinals expected defense to be a strength; it hasn’t been
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — The Arizona Cardinals expected their defense to be a strength this season. It hasn't been.
That's been particularly apparent lately. In their last six quarters, the Cardinals have allowed 66 points (and scored seven).
Jets’ Claiborne relishes challenge of facing Julio Jones
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Morris Claiborne came to the New York Jets intent on being their No. 1 cornerback — and an elite player at his position.
He's got that first goal locked down. Being mentioned in the same breath as the likes of Richard Sherman, Patrick Peterson and Chris Harris? Well, he's still got work to do.
Cardinals’ Patrick Peterson wraps up ‘by far my best camp’
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Patrick Peterson wrapped up what he called "by far" his best NFL training camp on Thursday.
And that's saying something since the Arizona Cardinals cornerback was an All-Pro selection three times and a Pro Bowl player in each of his previous six professional seasons.
His motivation for continuing to work hard on his craft is simple, and a bid audacious. He wants to be the best of all time.
CANTON, Ohio (AP) — Don't look for too many stars on the field Thursday night when the Dallas Cowboys and Arizona Cardinals kick off the NFL preseason in the Pro Football Hall of Fame game.
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — The Arizona Cardinals bolstered arguably their weakest position by signing ex-Cleveland cornerback Tramon Williams.
Finding a cornerback to play opposite Patrick Peterson has been a problem for Arizona. Coach Bruce Arians recently declared it open between Justin Bethel and Brandon Williams, although Ronald Zamort, an undrafted rookie, had looked good at the position before tearing an ACL in Saturday's Red and Blue practice.
A list of 55 of the top incoming senior high school football players in the state of Texas received nominations to play in the 2018 U.S. Army All-American Bowl, scheduled for Jan. 6 at the Alamodome.
The athletes were nominated by the U.S. Army All-American Bowl Selection Committee, which consists of All American Games, its national network of coaches and scouts, and 247Sports. Of 400 nominees from across the nation, a group of 100 players will be selected for the bowl.
Skins blame flat effort, Cardinals finally find their game
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — The Arizona Cardinals finally looked like the team they expected to be, even if it took a dozen games to get there.
But Washington Redskins coach Jay Gruden didn't like the way his team looked from Sunday's opening kickoff.
"I feel like we underachieved today," he said after the Cardinals' 31-23 victory, "and that's very frustrating."
NFL HALFWAY: Surprises and disappointments in NFC
It's not difficult to pinpoint the teams that have unexpectedly prospered or just as stunningly plummeted halfway through the 2016 season.
Yep, we're looking at you, Carolina Panthers and Arizona Cardinals. Last January, you played for a spot in the Super Bowl. Right now, you're hanging with the mediocrities (or worse) of the NFL.
Nor is it hard to spot the surprisingly successful teams putting themselves in the championship mix, from the Dallas Cowboys to the Oakland Raiders.
Revis Island has become a popular destination
Revis Island has become a popular destination.
Ignoring Richard Sherman, Josh Norman, Patrick Peterson and Aqib Talib and Chris Harris Jr. is a thing of the past.
Opposing quarterbacks and offensive coordinators no longer are sacrificing the portion of the field patrolled by star cornerbacks. And we're not only talking about teams with outstanding receivers such as the Falcons (Julio Jones), Bengals (A.J. Green) and Giants (Odell Beckham Jr.).
Cardinals look to end home skid vs Seattle in NFC West
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Coach Bruce Arians has accomplished a lot in his three seasons with the Cardinals.
Beating Seattle in Arizona isn't one of them.
That 0-3 record at home against the Seahawks was a major topic as the Cardinals prepared for the Sunday night matchup of two teams that have dominated the NFC West in recent years.
Cornerback Patrick Peterson brought it up in the locker room moments after Arizona's 28-3 victory over the New York Jets on Monday night.
Johnson, Cardinals roll past listless Jets 28-3
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Stopping the run was one of the few things the New York Jets had done well this season.
Until they faced David Johnson and the Arizona Cardinals.
Johnson rushed for 111 yards and three touchdowns, and the Cardinals shut down the listless Jets 28-3 on Monday night.
Johnson scored on runs of 58, 2 and 2 yards while becoming the first player to rush for three scores against the Jets since LeSean McCoy did it five years ago.
Cardinals, Niners look to bounce back from slow starts
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — The preseason expectations for the Arizona Cardinals and San Francisco 49ers were at opposite ends of the spectrum.
A year after making it to the NFC title game, the Cardinals believed they had the ingredients to take that next step and possibly win the Super Bowl. The Niners were more in a rebuild situation with first-year coach Chip Kelly and an unsettled quarterback situation.
Cardinals claim ex-Seahawks CB Simon on waivers
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — The Arizona Cardinals have been awarded their waiver claim on cornerback Tharold Simon from the Seattle Seahawks.
To make room on the roster, the Cardinals waived/injured linebacker Lamar Luis (quad).
Simon was a fifth-round draft pick of the Seahawks out of LSU in 2013. He missed his rookie season with a foot injury and played in 11 games the past two seasons, five as a starter. He had 11 tackles, one interception and two passes defensed.
Pick Six CBs: Peterson, Sherman, Harris, Norman, Revis, Slay
ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) — Darius Slay took a look at six names written on a notebook, an unofficial ranking of the NFL's top six shutdown corners: Patrick Peterson, Richard Sherman, Chris Harris, Josh Norman, Darrelle Revis and Slay.
"Oh, that's a good list," the Detroit Lions cornerback said Wednesday.
Tyrann Mathieu: ‘We’ll see’ if knee is 100 percent healthy
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Nearly nine months after he tore an ACL and underwent knee surgery for the second time in three seasons, Tyrann Mathieu is back and ready to go in the Arizona Cardinals' season opener against New England on Sunday night.
Coach Bruce Arians said Mathieu will play every down. Defensive coordinator James Boettcher said his do-everything All-Pro defensive back is "where he left off last year."
Ready or not, rookie Williams to start for Cardinals
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Rookie Brandon Williams is the starting cornerback for the Arizona Cardinals.
Playing opposite All-Pro Patrick Peterson, there will be a barrage of passes coming Williams' way.
Is he ready?
"He's the best we've got," coach Bruce Arians said after practice Wednesday, "so he better be."
It's almost Williams' job by default. Mike Jenkins tore an ACL and is out for the season. Justin Bethel has a bad foot. Marcus Cooper just got here.
Chiefs send CB Marcus Cooper to Cardinals for draft pick
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs sent cornerback Marcus Cooper to the Arizona Cardinals for an undisclosed draft pick on Friday as they began the process of trimming their roster.
The Cardinals have been trying to find a cornerback to start across from Patrick Peterson.
Cardinals CB questions amplified by loss of Mike Jenkins
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — The Arizona Cardinals lost another preseason game, but more significantly, lost one of the three players who were vying to start at cornerback opposite All-Pro Patrick Peterson.
That position is the only one on either the Arizona offense or defense to be unsettled, and on Monday it was down to rookie Brandon Williams against rusty Justin Bethel.
Cardinals wrap up “business-like” training camp
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — The Arizona Cardinals ended one of the NFL's longer training camps on Friday, shutting it down amid talk around the league that this could be a Super Bowl team.
"I thought it was very business-like," coach Bruce Arians said. "I thought our guys came to work every day. We had maybe two lull practices, mostly young guys."
Keenan Allen draws cornerback Jason Verrett in coverage every practice.
What that does to prepare Allen becomes apparent whenever he, well, draws someone else.
While the Chargers wide receiver does claim some success against his teammate, that outcome seemed in larger supply the past two days. Allen had a productive pair of joint practices against the Cardinals. He is scheduled to see them again Friday in a 6 p.m. exhibition game at Qualcomm Stadium.
