Rose swerves political controversy over Saudi golf event
KING ABDULLAH ECONOMIC CITY, Saudi Arabia (AP) — Top-ranked golfer Justin Rose opted against delving into the political ramifications of the decision to stage a European Tour event in Saudi Arabia, saying Wednesday he was happy to play in the tournament to "support growing the game."
The Saudi International starts Thursday amid scrutiny of the kingdom's human-rights record and condemnation following the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in October.
Spieth, Reed reunite with a hug and a laugh
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Jordan Spieth ended any speculation about his relationship with Patrick Reed with a hug.
Spieth and Reed played together Saturday in the Farmers Insurance Open. It was the most time they have spent with each other since sitting on opposite sides of a table in a closing Ryder Cup press conference amid questions why they weren't partners in France.
Uneasy twosome: Golf and politics at Saudi Arabia tournament
Golf usually isn't all that complicated for Dustin Johnson. He decides where he's going to play and tries to post the lowest score.
The newest addition to his schedule involved a little more than that. Johnson is among several of golf's biggest stars who are scheduled to play the Saudi International at the end of the month.
Major shots by major champions include overlooked ones
HONOLULU (AP) — Brooks Koepka still smiles at the memory of the 9-irons he hit in the final round of his second straight U.S. Open victory.
Yes, that's plural. They were on consecutive holes on the back nine at Shinnecock Hills.
The one that led to birdie was memorable. The one that led to par was "by far the best shot."
Patrick Reed moving on from Ryder Cup, shares Bahamas lead
NASSAU, Bahamas (AP) — Patrick Reed and Tiger Woods are about as far apart as can be on the leaderboard after one round of the Hero World Challenge.
Only they know how close they are after the Ryder Cup fallout.
Reed showed no sign of fatigue in his travels from Dubai to Hong Kong to the Bahamas in successive weeks, making birdie on three of his last five holes Thursday for a 7-under 65 and a share of the lead with late-entry Patrick Cantlay.
3 in lead in Hong Kong as 2019 European Tour begins
HONG KONG (AP) — The 2019 European Tour got underway on Thursday with Aaron Rai, Jason Scrivener and Yusaku Miyazato shooting 5-under 65s to share the lead after the first round of the Hong Kong Open.
They were already 10 strokes ahead of Masters champion Patrick Reed, who made four bogeys and a double bogey in a 75 — a week after contending at the World Tour Championship in Dubai.
Co-leaders Reed, Willett eye World Tour Championship title
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Patrick Reed and Danny Willett each put on a green jacket the last time they won a tournament. Now they have their eyes set on another significant prize.

Late rally lets Tony Finau keep 3-shot lead in HSBC
SHANGHAI (AP) — Tony Finau struggled for so much of Saturday in the HSBC Champions that he was hopeful of a strong finish to carry some momentum into the final round.
He got much more than he imagined.
Finau closed with three straight birdies for a 2-under 70 and kept his three-shot lead because of a late collapse by Justin Rose, who played the final two holes in five more shots than Finau required.
Tony Finau overcomes wild break to lead HSBC
SHANGHAI (AP) — Tony Finau has enjoyed such a good year that he wasn't about to let one bad break get him down Friday in the HSBC Champions.
Reed opens with 64 to take lead at HSBC Champions
SHANGHAI (AP) — Patrick Reed had a Ryder Cup he'd like to forget and spent three weeks at home in Texas preparing to finish the year strong.
He was at his best Thursday in the HSBC Champions.
Even in blustery conditions, Reed putted for birdie on every hole at Sheshan International and closed out his bogey-free round with a 25-foot birdie putt for an 8-under 64, giving him a two-shot lead over Tony Finau and Xander Schauffele.
Thomas wins successive money titles, 1st since Tiger Woods
Tiger Woods finished off the PGA Tour season by tapping in for par to win the Tour Championship, a moment that ended any doubts that he could win again after four surgeries on his lower back. And then the moment was gone.
Hours later, Woods and 17 other players were headed to France for the all-consuming Ryder Cup. And with barely enough time to digest Europe winning and Patrick Reed pouting, the PGA Tour started up a new season in California.
Column: Reed’s passion for Ryder Cup turns poisonous
SAINT-QUENTIN-EN-YVELINES, France (AP) — What the Americans need is a Ryder Cup team filled with guys like Patrick Reed.
As long as Patrick Reed isn't one of them.
Three days on Le Golf National went bad enough for a powerful U.S. team that lost its way off the tee and on the scoreboard. Europe won eight consecutive matches, built a four-point lead going into Sunday's singles session and never gave the Americans much hope on its way to another victory on home soil.
Report: Patrick Reed vents over Spieth, Furyk in Ryder Cup
NEW YORK (AP) — Patrick Reed blames Jordan Spieth for them not playing together at the Ryder Cup and told The New York Times that U.S. captain Jim Furyk was not smart to sit him out twice.
Europe won the Ryder Cup 17½-10½ at Le Golf National outside Paris. Europe now has won nine of the last 12 times, and it was the third time in its last five victories that it won by seven points or more.
Column: Ryder Cup’s ‘Captain America’ loses his superpowers
SAINT-QUENTIN-EN-YVELINES, France (AP) — Forget Captain America. Because, as wits on social media were quick to point out, Patrick Reed spent so much time in the water on Day 2 of the Ryder Cup that a better nickname for him would be Aquaman.
The lesson brutally delivered to the Masters champion by Le Golf National's unforgiving Albatross course is that Reed needs to drop the superhero nickname, at least until he grows superpowers to go with it.
Europe sweeps afternoon to build 5-3 lead in Ryder Cup
SAINT-QUENTIN-EN-YVELINES, France (AP) — Three matches in the books, three red points on the board, and Tiger Woods was still on the golf course.
This was exactly the start the Americans wanted in the Ryder Cup.
And then Europe finished even better.
Four hours later, the cheers at Le Golf National ramped up to a feverish pitch as Europe swept all four matches Friday afternoon for a 5-3. It was the first time Europe swept a session since 1989, and the first time ever at the Ryder Cup in foursomes.
The Latest: Spectator hit on head, hospitalized at Ryder Cup
SAINT-QUENTIN-EN-YVELINES, France (AP) — The Latest on the Ryder Cup at Le Golf National (all times local):
A spectator was hospitalized after being hit on the head by a golf ball following an errant drive by Brooks Koepka on the opening day at the Ryder Cup.
The incident took place at the sixth hole at Le Golf National, during the morning fourballs. The spectator was assessed by the medical team at the course and taken to the hospital as a precaution.
As good as it gets: Fleetwood is rocking in Ryder Cup debut
SAINT-QUENTIN-EN-YVELINES, France (AP) — Tommy Fleetwood has the long, flowing hair of a rock star, and he was treated like one as he strode through the massed ranks of spectators at the back of the 14th green on a day he'll never forget at the Ryder Cup.

Reed relishes being Captain America _ or Public Enemy No. 1
SAINT-QUENTIN-EN-YVELINES, France (AP) — Patrick Reed relishes the role of Captain America.
He's just as comfortable being Public Enemy No. 1 at the Ryder Cup.
"I'm supposed to be the villain, just like when Ian Poulter comes to the States, he's the villain," Reed smirked. "You expect to hear the fans kind of go back and forth with you. If it's not happening, it probably means you're not playing very well."
DeChambeau, McEvoy lead European Open by 1
HAMBURG, Germany (AP) — Bryson DeChambeau shared a one-shot lead with Richard McEvoy heading to the final round of the European Open on Saturday.
Both golfers seek their first European Tour title.
DeChambeau started the third round ahead by a shot.
But McEvoy carded a 3-under 69 for the Englishman to lead the tournament at 12 under. DeChambeau had to birdie the last hole to tie him with a 70 at Green Eagle Golf Courses.
HAMBURG, Germany (AP) — Bryson DeChambeau reeled off four birdies in the last seven holes to shoot a 4-under 68 and remain top of the leaderboard after the second round of the European Open on Friday.
The 24-year-old American, who led overnight, finished with a 10-under total of 134. He is one stroke ahead of Richard McEvoy of England (65) and Matthias Schwab (67) of Austria.
CARNOUSTIE, Scotland (AP) — Justin Rose made his only birdie of the day when he needed it the most, sinking an 18-footer on the final hole to make the cut Friday in the British Open.
CARNOUSTIE, Scotland (AP) — Patrick Reed would figure to be a player British fans love to hate, largely due to his passionate play for the other side in the Ryder Cup.
But at least one Scot found something to like Tuesday as the Masters champion tried a variety of shots in a British Open practice round on the links of Carnoustie before hitting a Scottish-like punch 6-iron that ran some 100 yards on the ground before ending up next to the pin on the 16th green.
Woods says British Open becomes best shot at a major
CARNOUSTIE, Scotland (AP) — Tiger Woods doesn't feel as old at the oldest championship in golf.
Back at the British Open for the first time in three years, Woods broke from his tradition on Tuesday morning. Instead of being among the first on the tee for practice, he didn't show up at Carnoustie until his news conference just before lunch. Then, he played nine holes with Masters champion Patrick Reed and Bryson DeChambeau.
This was not a case of a 42-year-old needing his rest.

Winner: Brooks Koepka, who shot a final-round 68 to finish at 1-over 281.

SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. (AP) — The Latest on the U.S. Open, golf's second major championship of the year (all times local):
This year's U.S. Open will be a chance to celebrate the state of golf in the country.
Americans hold all four of golf's major trophies for the first time since 2004. Patrick Reed won the Masters this year, joining PGA Championship winner Justin Thomas, British Open champ Jordan Spieth and last year's U.S. Open winner, Brooks Koepka.
SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. (AP) — Rickie Fowler knows he can win major championships. He says everyone in golf knows that. So, Rickie, how about this week in the U.S. Open?
Majors have not been kind to Fowler, who either gets teased or slammed by them. In April, he came up one shot short of Patrick Reed at the Masters. Fowler also was runner-up at both the U.S. and British Opens in 2014. In all, he has eight top-five finishes in Grand Slam events.
