PARIS (AP) — Cesc Fabregas almost had a dream debut for Monaco in the French league only for teammate Youri Tielemans to waste a late golden chance in a 1-1 draw at Marseille on Sunday.
Despite only signing from Premier League Chelsea on Friday, Fabregas went straight into the team and added poise and assurance to Monaco's midfield.
In the first minute of injury time, Fabregas cleverly chipped the ball over the Marseille defense, only for Tielemans to drag his shot wide.
Respite for struggling Monaco with win in French League Cup
PARIS (AP) — Giulian Biancone's goal gave Thierry Henry's struggling Monaco side a 1-0 win over second-division side Lorient in the French League Cup on Wednesday.
Monaco is second from the bottom in the French league and desperately needed a boost after eight defeats and just two wins in 12 games since Henry took over in mid-October.
The former Arsenal star has had to deal with a huge injury crisis, forcing him to pick teenagers with little experience, including the 18-year-old Biancone.

The win lifted Monaco out of the relegation zone and dropped Amiens into 19th place. Both teams have 13 points but Monaco has the better goal difference.

PARIS (AP) — Patrick Vieira's Nice extended its match-winning streak to five games with a 2-0 win against Lille in the French league on Sunday.
From 15th place in September after three losses in his first six games as Nice manager, the former Arsenal great has now steered the Mediterranean team to seventh, with Saint-Etienne, Marseille, Lille and Montpellier just ahead, all within three points.
Giovinco back in Italy squad after 3-year absence
GENOA, Italy (AP) — Sebastian Giovinco is back in the Italy squad after an absence of nearly three years, but Mario Balotelli has been left out.
Italy coach Roberto Mancini included the 31-year-old Toronto FC forward in the 28-man squad he named Friday for upcoming matches against Ukraine and Poland.
Giovinco, who has scored one goal in 23 appearances for Italy, last played for his country on Oct. 15, 2015.
Balotelli’s return helps Vieira’s Nice to win 1-0 at Lyon
PARIS (AP) — Mario Balotelli helped coach Patrick Vieira to his first success in the French league as Nice won at Lyon 1-0 on Friday.
Although Balotelli did not score the Italy striker was a constant threat having missed the first three games of the season through suspension. Nice did not win any of those, picking up only a draw as Vieira — a dominant midfielder with Arsenal, Juventus and France during his playing career — got off to a difficult start.
NICE, France (AP) — Patrick Vieira's coaching career at Nice got off to a rocky start after strikers Mario Balotelli and Alassane Plea failed to show up for the first day of pre-season training Monday.
Balotelli top-scored last season with 18 goals, while Plea netted 16. Both have been linked with moves this summer, with Premier League West Ham reportedly keen on Plea and Balotelli a target for French rival Marseille.
Torrent wins in NYCFC debut, 2-1 over Toronto FC
NEW YORK (AP) — Jo Inge Berget scored twice and coach Domenec Torrent celebrated his New York City FC debut with a 2-1 victory over Toronto FC on Sunday.
Berget made it 2-1 in the 68th minute, following Maximiliano Moralez's direct pass up the right channel and slotting it home.
NYCFC (9-3-4) tied it at 1 in the 51st minute on Berget's back heel from the top of the 6-yard box.
NICE, France (AP) — Former Arsenal captain Patrick Vieira was hired as manager of the French club Nice on Monday after leaving as coach of New York City FC.
Vieira replaces Lucien Favre at Nice. New York City FC said Domenec Torrent will succeed Vieira at the Major League Soccer club. Torrent will begin in New York once his U.S. work permit is approved.

Toronto FC beats NYCFC 2-0 in Game 1 of Eastern semis
TORONTO (AP) — Jozy Altidore scored in the 84th minute to break a feisty stalemate and substitute Tosaint Ricketts added a stoppage-time goal to give Toronto FC a 2-0 victory over New York City FC on Sunday night in Game 1 of the MLS Eastern Conference semifinal series.
The second game in the two-leg series is next Sunday at Yankee Stadium.
"It wasn't an easy game at all," New York coach Patrick Vieira said. "The atmosphere in the stadium was electric. And I think the fans were incredible."
