MLS veteran Paulo Nagamura announces his retirement
KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — Sporting Kansas City midfielder Paulo Nagamura is retiring from professional soccer and will join the club's developmental team as an assistant coach for next season.
The 33-year-old Nagamura spent 12 years in Major League Soccer, winning two MLS Cup championships and three U.S. Open Cup titles. He started 240 of the 269 games he played in MLS with 15 goals and 21 assists.
Sporting KC picks up 5 club options, reshapes its roster
KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — Sporting Kansas City has exercised club options on midfielders Benji Joya and Lawrence Olum and defenders Saad Abdul-Salaam, Jimmy Medranda and Seth Sinovic for next season.
The club also announced Wednesday that Nuno Andre Coelho, Kevin Ellis, Alec Kann, Chance Myers, Jacob Peterson and Paulo Nagamura were no longer under contract, though Ellis and Kann have been extended offers and contract negotiations are ongoing.
Sporting beats Quakes 2-1, 1st win in San Jose since 2000
SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Kevin Ellis scored his first goal of the season in the 81st minute and Sporting Kansas City beat the Earthquakes 2-1 on Saturday night for their first victory in San Jose since Aug. 16, 2000.
Benny Feilhaber's corner slipped through a group of leaping players and connected with Ellis,, who deflected it in off his back heel. Kansas City (12-12-7) was 0-10-5 in Northern California since its last victory.
