PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The jersey had already been thrown around Gabe Kapler's shoulders. The hat, however, was still sitting on the table. And the new manager of the Philadelphia Phillies couldn't wait to throw it on his head.
"Give me that 'P' and put this thing on," the 42-year-old said as he tugged on the brim during his introductory press conference on Thursday at Citizens Bank Park. "Feels so good."
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Philadelphia Phillies went outside the organization and perhaps outside the box to get a new manager.
Former major league outfielder Gabe Kapler was hired Monday, completing a search that lasted one month.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Former major league outfielder Gabe Kapler will be hired to manage the Philadelphia Phillies, according to a person familiar with the decision.
The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because an official announcement hasn't been made.
Kapler has served as director of player development for the Los Angeles Dodgers since 2014. The Dodgers trail the Houston Astros 3-2 in the World Series. Game 6 is Tuesday night in Los Angeles.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Phillies have named Larry Bowa a senior adviser to general manager Matt Klentak.
Bowa was the team's bench coach and infield instructor the previous four seasons. The 71-year-old Bowa has spent 33 of his 52 seasons in baseball with the Phillies. He was the starting shortstop for the 1980 World Series champions.
Bowa also managed the Phillies for four years (2001-04), including the final game at Veterans Stadium and the first at Citizens Bank Park.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Pete Mackanin ended his tenure as manager of the Philadelphia Phillies with a win, Terry Collins exited the New York Mets with a loss.
Maikel Franco hit a three-run homer in a six-run fourth inning Sunday in Philadelphia's season-ending 11-0 rout.
"A great day for the Phillies, a great day for me," said Mackanin, who found out this week that he would not return as manager after 2 1/2 seasons. "It was really special, probably one of the best days of my career."
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Philadelphia Phillies are doing their best to make sure that Pete Mackanin's managerial tenure ends on a high note.
Maikel Franco, Jorge Alfaro and Cesar Hernandez all homered to support six strong innings from starter Ben Lively as the Phillies defeated the New York Mets 6-2 on Friday night.
Earlier in the day, the Phillies (65-95) announced that Mackanin would not return to the dugout in 2018. Mackanin was given a role as a senior advisor to general manager Matt Klentak.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Pete Mackanin got a contract extension when the Philadelphia Phillies were scuffling and lost his job after they turned it around.
Mackanin is out as manager after 2½ seasons but will remain in the dugout for the final three games this weekend and return as a special assistant to general manager Matt Klentak in 2018.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Phillies manager Pete Mackanin had said he didn't care about the difference between 99 losses and 100 for his rebuilding club.
Now that Philadelphia can't get to triple digits, he's changed his tune.
"I lied," he said. "I admit it."
Jake Thompson and four relievers combined to hold the Washington Nationals in check as the Phillies spoiled Bryce Harper's return with a 4-1 win Tuesday night.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Jorge Alfaro is trying to remain stress free as he auditions to become Philadelphia's starting catcher in 2018.
Alfaro homered and Philadelphia's relievers pitched six strong innings after a rain delay to lead the Phillies over the Oakland Athletics 5-2 on Saturday night.
"I'm just trying not to put too much pressure on myself, just have fun, compete and help the team," Alfaro said.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Old-school Daniel Mengden pitched like an old-time ace.
Mengden was dominant in a two-hitter, Matt Olson and Matt Joyce each hit two-run homers and the Oakland Athletics beat the Philadelphia Phillies 4-0 on Friday night.
"It felt great," Mengden said. "We dream about doing it since we're little and coming all the way up and doing it is a great feeling."
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Rhys Hoskins is putting on such an amazing power display that he is getting autograph requests from his own team. Well, sort of.
A night after manager Pete Mackanin jokingly said he was going to get Hoskins' autograph following another home run by the power-hitting rookie, Hoskins went deep yet again. This time, it was teammate Cameron Perkins requesting a signature.
WASHINGTON (AP) — After watching Rhys Hoskins hit yet another home run, Philadelphia Phillies manager Pete Mackanin wanted to talk about an at-bat where the rookie didn't even swing.
Hoskins went deep and drew three walks, Maikel Franco hit his 20th home run and the Phillies beat the Washington Nationals 5-4 on Saturday night.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Rhys Hoskins is no ordinary rookie.
Since his debut with the Philadelphia Phillies last month, the 24-year-old slugger has shown prodigious power, remarkable plate discipline and the poise of a veteran.
"He looks like a professional hitter," manager Pete Mackanin said. "He just gives you quality at-bats. He knows the strike zone. He's not afraid to get behind in the count. He's not afraid to go the other way. He wants to drive in the run."
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Phillies manager Pete Mackanin picks between two pairs of red sneakers based on which ones have been on his feet during hard-to-come-by wins. Brewers catcher Stephen Vogt gets dressed in a specific sequence each day, down to how he pulls on his socks and in what order. Sometimes, Kansas City's Brandon Moss pretends to be superstitious by going with a good-luck bat.
MIAMI (AP) — Giancarlo Stanton's amazing August ended with his worst game of the month.
The major league home run leader flied out in the ninth with two on to punctuate an 0-for-5 night, and the Philadelphia Phillies sent the Miami Marlins below .500 by winning 3-2 Thursday.
Stanton failed to get the ball out of the infield in three plate appearances against Ben Lively. Facing Phillies closer Hector Neris, Stanton squandered a chance to put the Marlins ahead.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Rhys Hoskins took a rain check on going deep.
Hoskins' thunderous bat got the day off at a cold and damp Citizens Bank Park when Tuesday night's game between the Atlanta Braves and the Philadelphia Phillies was postponed.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Ty Kelly doesn't play much, but he's learned to make the most of his opportunities.
"He's my secret weapon," Phillies manager Pete Mackanin said.
Mackanin summoned him at the most opportune of times on Saturday night, and Kelly delivered.
Kelly had a pinch-hit grand slam, Rhys Hoskins hit a three-run homer and Philadelphia snapped a six-game losing streak, beating the San Francisco Giants 12-9.
"I take anything positive, but that was pretty amazing," Kelly said.
ATLANTA (AP) — Odubel Herrera and the Philadelphia Phillies won't relinquish their dominant hold on the Atlanta Braves.
Herrera again feasted on Atlanta pitching by driving in a run with two triples in the Phillies' 3-2 victory on Wednesday night that completed their third series sweep of the Braves this season.
ATLANTA (AP) — Don't ask the Atlanta Braves to explain how the Philadelphia Phillies have the worst record in the National League.
Against Atlanta, the Phillies look like a powerhouse.
Odubel Herrera hit a two-run homer, Zach Eflin pitched seven strong innings following his recall from the minors, and the Phillies beat Atlanta 5-2 on Tuesday night to continue their season-long mastery of the Braves.
DENVER (AP) — The Philadelphia Phillies were running out of chances after having two runners cut down at home plate. Cameron Rupp made sure there wasn't a third time with a clutch hit against one of the best closers in the majors.
Rupp hit a two-run double in the ninth inning off Greg Holland, and Philadelphia rallied to beat the Rockies 3-2 on Sunday.
The unlikely comeback against a Rockies team that was 59-0 when leading after eight innings gave the Phillies a happy plane trip to Atlanta.
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Andrelton Simmons could see clearly from third base that reliever Luis Garcia's eighth-inning pitch was sailing high, and then higher still.
"It froze me for a second the way it came out of the pitcher's hand," Simmons said, "I thought, OK, it's over (catcher Cameron Rupp's) head, I've got to go. Then you see how quick the catcher kind of got to it."
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — The Los Angeles Angels are finally getting the offensive production they've craved all season.
Mike Trout, C.J. Cron and Kaleb Cowart all homered in a seven-run third inning, JC Ramirez pitched eight strong innings and the Angels defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 7-0 Wednesday night.
It was the fifth consecutive game the Angels scored at least six runs.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Phillies manager Pete Mackanin has a new nickname for Ty Kelly. Just call him "Ty-breaker" Kelly.
Kelly singled home the winning run with two outs in the 11th inning to lift Philadelphia to a 4-3 comeback victory over the Atlanta Braves on Saturday night.
"That was fun," Mackanin said. "A tiebreaker by Ty Kelly. I had to use that."
Kelly doesn't mind the moniker.
"I like it as long as I can keep on doing it," he said.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The surprise wasn't seeing a team pound out nine extra-base hits, just that it was the Phillies doing it.
Cameron Rupp hit two home runs and had four RBIs and Aaron Nola set a career high with 10 strikeouts over six innings to lead Philadelphia to a 9-0 victory over the Houston Astros on Wednesday night.
Maikel Franco homered and doubled and Tommy Joseph had two doubles for the Phillies, who had 14 hits while setting season highs for doubles (5) and extra-base hits.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Mastering a new pitch has turned Aaron Nola into an ace.
Nola tied a career-high with nine strikeouts in seven sharp innings, Freddy Galvis hit a two-run homer and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the reeling Milwaukee Brewers 6-1 on Friday night.
Nola (7-6) allowed one run and five hits. He has six straight quality starts, going 4-1 and lowering his ERA from 4.76 to 3.38 in that span.
MIAMI (AP) — Maikel Franco had a different approach during batting practice before the game and it paid off.
Franco had three hits, including a tie-breaking home run in the eighth inning, to help lift the Philadelphia Phillies to a 5-2 victory over the Miami Marlins on Tuesday night.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Phillies manager Pete Mackanin was pleasantly surprised by his team's power display on Sunday.
"I normally don't bring notes with me," Mackanin said at the podium after the game, "but I got to try to remember all those home runs we hit. That was really something."
Freddy Galvis hit two of his team's six home runs, Jerad Eickhoff threw five shutout innings, and the Phillies topped the San Diego Padres 7-1 to break their five-game slide.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Aaron Nola felt like himself again.
Nola pitched shutout ball into the eighth inning, Freddy Galvis and Tommy Joseph homered, and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the St. Louis Cardinals 5-1 Thursday to stop a five-game losing streak.
Nola (4-5) allowed one run, four hits and two walks in 7 1/3 innings and struck out eight.
"I know what I'm capable of and know what I can do," Nola said. "Today was me. I felt confident in all of my pitches."
If the Cubs and Astros are examples of rebuilding done right, the Philadelphia Phillies are proof that it isn't so easy.
Philadelphia has dropped 11 of 12 and is on pace to lose 110 games. There's still time for the Phillies to show some progress in 2017, but after four straight years with at least 89 losses, this is shaping up to be another step back — and a reminder that young players don't always develop as teams might hope.
ATLANTA (AP) — Hector Neris is out as the Philadelphia Phillies' closer.
Manager Pete Mackanin says Neris needs to work on his splitter and Pat Neshek will take over in the ninth inning, at least on an interim basis.
Neris was pulled after giving up two hits in the ninth inning of Tuesday night's 3-1 win over the Braves. Neshek recorded the final two outs for his first save of the season.
ATLANTA (AP) — Aaron Nola wasn't satisfied with becoming the first Phillies pitcher to last eight innings this season.
Nola tried to convince manager Pete Mackanin to leave him in the game for the ninth. That goal for a complete game will have to wait.
Nola allowed a run over eight innings, Odubel Herrera doubled in the go-ahead run in the sixth and Philadelphia survived a ninth-inning scare to beat the Atlanta Braves 3-1 on Tuesday night.
ATLANTA (AP) — Odubel Herrera extended his hitting tear and had so much offensive support in Philadelphia's lopsided win over Atlanta that the Braves couldn't commit to Bartolo Colon's next scheduled start.
Herrera continued his power surge with a two-run homer and two doubles, Tommy Joseph homered and drove in three runs, and the Phillies beat the Braves 11-4 on Monday night.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — After watching one of his starting pitchers win for the first time in more than a month, Phillies manager Pete Mackanin has a new favorite hurler.
Ben Lively pitched seven strong innings in his major league debut, Odubel Herrera drove in three runs in Philadelphia's four-run seventh and the Phillies held on for a 5-3 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Saturday.
MIAMI (AP) — Philadelphia Phillies right-hander Vince Velasquez left Tuesday night's game at Miami in the second inning because of a right elbow flexor strain, and he'll go on the disabled list, manager Pete Mackanin said.
Velasquez said he had a similar injury in the minors, and he's optimistic he's not seriously hurt.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Tim Adleman worked methodically through a lineup full of aggressive, struggling hitters.
Adleman tossed eight innings of one-hit ball, Adam Duvall and Scott Schebler homered and the Cincinnati Reds beat the Philadelphia Phillies 5-2 on Friday night.
Adleman (3-2) entered with a 6.19 ERA and hadn't pitched more than seven innings in 19 career starts. But he looked like Greg Maddux against Philadelphia.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Phillies' hottest hitter came through twice Thursday.
Tommy Joseph hit a tying home run in the seventh inning and a winning single in the 11th, lifting Philadelphia over Colorado 2-1 and stopping the Rockies from a four-game sweep.
PITTSBURGH (AP) — His club mired in a miserable funk that's drained all the momentum from a promising April, Philadelphia Phillies manager Pete Mackanin called a team meeting before a weekend series in Pittsburgh.
While Mackanin declined to go into the "recipe" of what was said, for one night Jeremy Hellickson provided the most important ingredient for winning baseball: good pitching.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Phillies have extending manager Pete Mackanin's contract through next season with a club option for 2019.
Mackanin is 121-160 since replacing Ryne Sandberg on June 26, 2015. He was in the final year of a contract before signing a new, two-year deal on Thursday.
The move comes after the Phillies have lost 10 of 12 games to fall to 13-19.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Freddy Galvis elevated the ball at just the right time.
Galvis hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift the Philadelphia Phillies to a 6-5 comeback win over the Washington Nationals on Sunday.
CHICAGO (AP) — No sooner did his manager talk about the urgency to produce than Tommy Joseph did just that.
Joseph hit an early three-run homer, Aaron Altherr had three RBIs and the Philadelphia Phillies routed the Chicago Cubs 10-2 on Monday night.
Prior to the game, Philadelphia skipper Pete Mackanin said he liked to give a struggling player such as Joseph about 100 at-bats to come around.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Maikel Franco rounded first base after his game-winning hit and kept running to right field, trying to avoid a celebratory beatdown from his teammates.
Andres Blanco caught him.
"Whitey got me this time," Franco said of the playful punches he endured. "My body is killing me."
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Jeremy Hellickson confounds hitters with a soft-tossing strategy that is as much necessity as preference.
Hellickson pitched seven strong innings and Cesar Hernandez had three hits and scored two runs to lead the Philadelphia Phillies to a 4-3 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Friday night.
NEW YORK (AP) — Maikel Franco and the Philadelphia Phillies ended a couple of aggravating streaks. For the New York Mets, the frustration might just be starting.
Franco homered and doubled while breaking the longest hitless streak of his big league career, and the Phillies capitalized on an error by untested first baseman Jay Bruce to beat the short-handed Mets 6-4 Thursday night.
Philadelphia took two of three at Citi Field after losing six straight series to the Mets.
NEW YORK (AP) — The rebuilding Philadelphia Phillies haven't had much luck at Citi Field the past few years. They caught a break Tuesday night courtesy of Mets third baseman Jose Reyes.
Cameron Rupp drove in the tiebreaking run with a sacrifice fly and Philadelphia scored four times in the 10th inning for a 6-2 victory over New York.
NEW YORK (AP) — Phillies right-hander Clay Buchholz had surgery to repair a torn flexor tendon in his right forearm Tuesday, and could miss the rest of the season.
The 32-year-old was placed on the 10-day disabled list retroactive to April 15 prior to the club's series opener against the New York Mets. The surgery was performed by Dr. James Andrews, and Buchholz now faces an estimated recovery time of four to six months.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Cesar Hernandez became Philadelphia's first baserunner against Tanner Roark with a soft bunt single in the fourth inning. Hernandez had a much longer hit in the eighth that propelled the Phillies to a win.
Hernandez's tiebreaking, two-run homer off Joe Blanton lifted Philadelphia over the Washington Nationals 4-2 Saturday to stop a four-game losing streak.
"He didn't bunt for a hit that time," Phillies manager Pete Mackanin said.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Phillies manager Pete Mackanin had to appreciate his team's record start to Saturday's game.
For Nationals skipper Dusty Baker, it was just a bad dream that wouldn't end.
Howie Kendrick hit a bases-loaded triple while Philadelphia scored 12 runs for the biggest first inning in team history, and Philadelphia routed Washington 17-3.
CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) — While the future Philadelphia Phillies in the minors get all the hype, the big leaguers have plenty to prove.
Manager Pete Mackanin and the front office have modest goals for the rebuilding Phillies this season, but the players have loftier expectations. They won't be content holding down a spot until a prospect is ready to take their job.
