MAINZ, Germany (AP) — Midfielder Julian Brandt scored twice and laid on two goals as Bayer Leverkusen shrugged off its German Cup exit by winning 5-1 at Mainz in the Bundesliga on Friday.
Leverkusen, knocked out 2-1 by second division Heidenheim on Tuesday, racked up a third successive league victory and is firmly in the hunt for European qualification.

BERLIN (AP) — Peter Bosz did all he could for his former side.
Bosz's Bayer Leverkusen came from behind to defeat Bayern Munich 3-1 and end the visitors' seven-game winning run in the Bundesliga on Saturday.
But Borussia Dortmund, which started the 20th round six points clear of Bayern, was unable to take full advantage as it was held at Eintracht Frankfurt to 1-1.
Bayern goalkeeper Neuer injures hand, out of Leverkusen game
MUNICH (AP) — Bayern Munich captain Manuel Neuer has been ruled out of the Bundesliga game at Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday.
Bayern says its 32-year-old goalkeeper injured his right hand in training on Friday and is remaining in Munich rather than traveling with the squad.
Bayern, the six-time defending champion, did not give the extent of Neuer's injury, nor an indication of how many games he will miss. Reserve goalkeeper Sven Ulreich will play in his place.
Leverkusen fires Heiko Herrlich, signs Peter Bosz as coach
LEVERKUSEN, Germany (AP) — Bayer Leverkusen has fired coach Heiko Herrlich despite two Bundesliga wins in a row.
The German club, which is ninth in the standings, says former Borussia Dortmund coach Peter Bosz is taking over and will start preparations for the second half of the season on Jan. 4.
Bosz, who led Ajax to the Europa League final in 2017, agreed a deal through June 2020.
SINSHEIM, Germany (AP) — Borussia Dortmund coach Peter Stoeger says losing at Hoffenheim 3-1 in the Bundesliga's final round on Saturday was his last game in charge.
Stoeger says, "That was my last competitive game for Dortmund. We decided that a while back together. A new impetus, with a new coach, will do the club good."

Dortmund CEO Watzke hints Peter Stoeger may stay as coach
DORTMUND, Germany (AP) — Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke has suggested the club may keep Peter Stoeger as coach beyond the end of the season.
Watzke tells Sky Sport TV, "He hasn't lost a game yet. If he still doesn't lose any, we'd be stupid if we didn't keep it going."
Stoeger was appointed Dec. 10 after the firing of Peter Bosz. The Austrian coach has since overseen four wins and three draws in the league, after eight games without a win under Bosz.

DORTMUND, Germany (AP) — Borussia Dortmund sacked Peter Bosz as coach after managing just one win in 13 games across all competitions and named former Cologne coach Peter Stoeger as his replacement on Sunday.
Stoeger was sacked as Cologne coach the previous Sunday after his side failed to win any of its opening 14 Bundesliga games of the season.
The club said the 51-year-old Stoeger and his assistant coach Manfred Schmidt, who was also let go by Cologne, were signed until June 30, 2018.
Dortmund slumps to another loss; Bayern ‘winter champion’

Goetze hasn't played since January and was diagnosed in February with "metabolic disturbances" following months of recurring muscular problems.

AMSTERDAM (AP) — Ajax has appointed Marcel Keizer as its new head coach to replace Peter Bosz, who left the Amsterdam club after one season to join Borussia Dortmund.
The club announced Saturday that Keizer, who trained Ajax's second team last season, is being promoted and will shortly sign a two-year contract. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Director Edwin van der Sar says it was not a difficult decision because Keizer "knows the players, the organization and supports the club philosophy."

STOCKHOLM (AP) — The "glow" has been taken off the Europa League final because of the deadly bomb attack in Manchester that killed at least 22 people, Ajax coach Peter Bosz said on Tuesday.
"Tomorrow evening should be a football feast," Bosz said of Wednesday's game in Stockholm, "but because of events in Manchester, we're all affected, particularly as we're playing against Manchester."
The attack took place at the end of an Ariana Grande concert in central Manchester late Monday.
