Nishikori beats defending champ Gojowczyk at Moselle Open
METZ, France (AP) — Top-seeded Kei Nishikori reached the quarterfinals of the Moselle Open by beating defending champion Peter Gojowczyk of Germany, 7-6 (4), 6-3 on Wednesday.
Gojowczyk earned his maiden ATP title in Metz last year but couldn't save either of the two break points he faced against Nishikori, which was enough for the Japanese player to wrap up the win in 1 hour, 33 minutes.
Tsonga loses to defending champion at Moselle Open
METZ, France (AP) — Jo-Wilfried Tsonga made an unsuccessful return to competition on Tuesday, losing 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-4 to defending champion Peter Gojowczyk of Germany in the first round of the Moselle Open.
Tsonga, a three-time winner in Metz, played his first match since February after recovering from a knee injury.
Federer wins, Serena loses in Cincy tourney
MASON, Ohio (AP) — Roger Federer made a successful return to the Western & Southern Open on Tuesday.
The day wasn't so great for Serena Williams.
Federer advanced to the third round with a 6-4, 6-4 victory against Peter Gojowczyk, and Williams was eliminated by eighth-seeded Petra Kvitova in a 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 second-round loss.
Wawrinka still struggling following knee surgery
ROME (AP) — Stan Wawrinka is still struggling to regain his form following surgery on his left knee.
Playing his first match since February, the three-time Grand Slam champion lost to 55th-ranked Steve Johnson 6-4, 6-4 Sunday in the first round of the Italian Open.
Wawrinka committed 30 unforced errors to his American opponent's 17, was broken once in each set and failed to take advantage of his only two break opportunities.
Tiafoe wins first career ATP title at Delray Beach
DELRAY BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Frances Tiafoe won the Delray Beach Open, with father Frances Sr. watching, on Sunday for his first ATP Tour title.
The 91st-ranked Tiafoe, the first wild-card recipient to win the title in its 26-year history, had consecutive aces on the final two points for a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Peter Gojowczyk of Germany.
At 20, Tiafoe is the youngest American to win a title since Andy Roddick at 19 in 2002 in Houston.

DELRAY BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Peter Gojowczyk of Germany has beaten the last eight American opponents he's faced in ATP tour-level matches and will have a chance to defeat another Sunday when he faces Frances Tiafoe in the Delray Beach Open final.
The 91st-ranked Tiafoe, a wild-card recipient this week, journeyed to his first career ATP final by ousting Denis Shapovalov of Canada 7-5, 6-4 in his first career ATP semifinal Saturday night.
Canadian Shapovalov beats Fritz at the Delray Beach Open
DELRAY BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Denis Shapovalov of Canada beat American Taylor Fritz 7-5, 6-4 on Friday at the Delray Beach Open to earn the second semifinal berth of his career.
The 18-year-old Shapovalov lost only five points on his first serve and was never broken. His opponent Saturday is still to be determined as the late match Friday between No. 8-seeded Chung Hyeon of South Korea and American wild-card Frances Tiafoe was suspended because of rain. That match will be played on Saturday.
Top-ranked Sock loses to fellow American Opelka at Delray
DELRAY BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Top-ranked Jack Sock lost Wednesday night to fellow American Reilly Opelka 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 in the second round of the Delray Beach Open.
The 6-foot-11 Opelka, ranked No. 228, hit 17 aces. With two victories this week, he has doubled his win total for all of 2017.
Isner upset by Albot at New York Open
UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) — Third-seeded John Isner was upset by Radu Albot of Moldova 7-6 (5), 3-6, 6-3 on Wednesday night in the second round of the New York Open.
Isner hit 28 aces to Albot's one, but the 91st-ranked Albot came up with a third-set break and held on from there to knock off the American in a little more than 2 hours.
Isner, who had a first-round bye, has dropped his openers in all three tournaments he has played this season, including the Australian Open.
Davis Cup World Group: Germany 2, Australia 1 after doubles
BRISBANE, Australia (AP) — Tim Puetz and late call-up Jan-Lennard Struff gave Germany a 2-1 lead over Australia in their first-round Davis Cup World Group match, beating Matt Ebden and John Peers 6-4, 6-7 (1), 6-2, 6-7 (4), 6-4 in doubles on Saturday.
Puetz and Struff broke the Australians' service in the seventh game of the fifth set, then saved two break points of their own in the eighth before Puetz served out the match to love two games later.
Davis Cup: Kyrgios plays Struff 1st day, Australia-Germany

PARIS (AP) — Fifth-seeded Dominic Thiem needed four match points to beat lucky loser Peter Gojowczyk of Germany 6-4, 6-7 (3), 6-4 in the second round of the Paris Masters on Tuesday.
Having missed three chances to close out the match on his own serve, the Austrian finally won at close to midnight when Gojowczyk — serving to stay in the match — whipped a forehand that sailed just long.

Paire saves match point to beat Goffin at Moselle Open
METZ, France (AP) — French player Benoit Paire came out on top of a tight battle with David Goffin to reach the semifinals of the Moselle Open on Friday after saving one match point.
Paire edged the 2014 champion 7-6 (3), 5-7, 7-6 (7) after nearly 2 1/2 hours at the indoor tournament.
Goffin led 4-2 in the decider and failed to convert a match point at 6-5 in the tiebreaker.
Former champ Gilles Simon loses to Gojowczyk at Moselle Open
METZ, France (AP) — German qualifier Peter Gojowczyk upset two-time former champion Gilles Simon 6-4, 7-6 (4) in the second round of the Moselle Open on Wednesday.
The 95th-ranked Gojowczyk fired eight aces as he defeated the eighth-seeded Simon in 1 hour and 34 minutes for a place in the quarterfinals.
Top-seeded Jack Sock advances in Atlanta Open
ATLANTA (AP) — Top-seeded Jack Sock beat Israel's Dudi Sela 6-4, 6-3 on Thursday night in the American's opening match in the BB&T Atlanta Open.
Sock set up a quarterfinal match against fifth-seeded Kyle Edmund of England, a 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 winner over Germany's Peter Gojowczyk 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 in the hard-court event.
The 24-year-old Sock has three career victories, winning this year in Auckland, New Zealand, and Delray Beach, Florida.
Georgia Tech senior Christopher Eubanks made the most of his wild-card entry into the Atlanta Open, earning an opening-round 7-6, 6-4 win over fellow American Taylor Fritz on Tuesday.
Eubanks, the two-time Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year, held serve throughout the match — winning the first set 7-5 in a tiebreak and then earning an early break in the second before closing out the match on his serve.
The Atlanta native was playing in the tournament for the third time in as many years.
Top-seeded John Isner reaches Hall of Fame final
NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) — Top-seeded John Isner beat fellow American Bjorn Fratangelo 6-2, 6-4 on Saturday to reach the Hall of Fame final, putting him into position for his third title in the grass-court event.
The hard-serving Isner won at Newport in 2011 and 2012. He will face Australian qualifier Matthew Ebden, a 6-3, 6-3 winner over Germany's Peter Gojowczyk.

The hard-serving Isner had 20 aces and did not face a break point in his bid to become a three-time Newport champion. He won the grass-court tournament in 2011 and 2012.
"Just one of those matches on a surface like this, with two pretty good servers, that's how it can go," Isner said. "You just get one break and you try to hold onto it."
NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) — Peter Gojowczyk upset defending champion Ivo Karlovic 7-6 (5), 6-7 (1), 7-6 (4) on Thursday to reach Hall of Fame Tennis Championships semifinals.
Gojowczyk, a 28-year-old German, overcame 30 aces from the second-seeded Croatian. Gojowczyk was 3 for 3 on break points.
"In the end, it didn't go my way," Karlovic said. "That's life, that's tennis. That's how it goes sometimes."
NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) — Defending champion Ivo Karlovic of Croatia beat American Denis Kudla 6-4, 6-4 on Wednesday in his Hall of Fame Tennis Championships opener to reach the quarterfinals in the grass-court event.
The 38-year-old Karlovic had 16 aces and broke Kudla's serve three times. Karlovic will face Germany's Peter Gojowczyk, a 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 winner over Russia's Konstantin Kravchuk.
NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) — Denis Kudla beat fellow American Mitchell Krueger 6-4, 5-7, 6-0 in the opening round of the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships on Monday.
Kudla advances to play defending champion Ivo Karlovic, who is seeking his fourth straight finals appearance on Newport's grass courts.
Tobias Kamke won the final three games of the second set to knock out Taylor Fritz 6-3, 6-3. Kamke will play No. 3 seed Adrian Mannarino.
Brown reaches 2nd round in Metz, Paire out in straight sets
METZ, France (AP) — Dustin Brown hit 15 aces to dispatch local favorite Paul-Henri Mathieu 6-4, 6-2 and reach the second round of the Moselle Open on Tuesday.
Brown, from Germany, converted four of his six break points to set up a meeting with another French player, Julien Benneteau. It will be their first meeting.
