Spieth tied for lead after 12 holes at rainy Riviera
LOS ANGELES (AP) — One of the wildest pars Phil Mickelson ever made didn't even count. Neither did one of the worst lies Jordan Spieth ever had.
Fifty minutes into the start of the Genesis Open, with only 30 players having teed off, the opening round was scrapped because of increasing rain that soaked Riviera and poor visibility that made it unusually tough on the earliest of starters.
Everyone started over after what amounted to a seven-hour delay, and Spieth made the most of his second chance.
Column: Woods, Mickelson still going strong

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Phil Mickelson is closing in on three decades on the PGA Tour and a half-century on Earth, and he still feels his best golf is good enough.
He was at his best at Pebble Beach, and no one had a chance.

Phil Mickelson on brink of 5th Pebble Beach victory
PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Phil Mickelson put himself on the brink of a fifth victory in the AT&T Pebble Beach pro-am by turning a three-shot deficit into a three-shot lead when a wild day of weather kept him from finishing Sunday.
Mickelson was bogey-free with six birdies, and he made his big run starting with a 9-iron to a foot behind the cup on the par-4 ninth. That was start of a five-hole stretch when Mickelson made three birdies and Paul Casey had two bogeys.
Casey leads by 3 over Mickelson at Pebble Beach
PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Bill Murray met a pair of baby kangaroos from the Monterey Zoo. Jerry Kelly tried to mimic the peculiar post-swing moves of Ho Sung Choi. Jordan Spieth sent players and fans along two fairways on a frantic search for his tee shot.
All that commotion on celebrity Saturday at Pebble Beach, and Paul Casey missed it all.

Adam Long wins Desert Classic, beating Mickelson, Hadwin
LA QUINTA, Calif. (AP) — Adam Long made a 14-foot birdie putt on the final hole Sunday to win the Desert Classic for his first PGA Tour title.
Making his sixth career start on the tour, Long closed with a 7-under 65 on the Stadium Course at PGA West to beat playing partners Phil Mickelson and Adam Hadwin by a stroke.
Mickelson, the leader after each of the first three rounds, fought putting problems in a 69. His 40-foot birdie try on 18 curled left at the end.
Phil Mickelson maintains 2-shot lead in Desert Classic
LA QUINTA, Calif. (AP) — Phil Mickelson has barely stopped smiling since he teed off Thursday morning in the Desert Classic.
"It's so fun," Mickelson said. "I just love being in contention, having a chance to win, being in the final group, feeling the nerves, feeling that excitement, the opportunity. It's just, it's really fun."
Phil Mickelson shoots 68 to take 2-shot lead into weekend
LA QUINTA, Calif. (AP) — Phil Mickelson birdied four of his last five holes Friday in the Desert Classic to take a two-stroke lead into the weekend in his first event of the year.
A day after matching his career-low score with 12-under 60 at La Quinta Country Club, the 48-year-old Mickelson had a 68 on PGA West's Nicklaus Tournament Course to reach 16 under.
Phil Mickelson shoots 12-under 60 at La Quinta in 2019 debut
LA QUINTA, Calif. (AP) — Phil Mickelson still feels as young as ever. He still plays that way, too.
Mickelson began his 27th full season as a pro Thursday by flirting with one of the few feats he hasn't accomplished — golf's magic number. The 48-year-old left-hander still shot a 12-under 60 in the Desert Classic, tying his career-low score he last shot in the Phoenix Open six years ago. It was the most under par he has been in any of the 2,077 rounds he has played on the PGA Tour.
Turner’s B/R Live among providers offering match refunds
Turner's B/R Live brand is offering a refund to those who experienced technical difficulties during the Phil Mickelson-Tiger Woods pay-per-view match in Las Vegas.
B/R Live said Saturday that it would offer refunds. Charter Spectrum, Cox Communications, Dish/Sling TV and AT&T — via its DirecTV and U-Verse platforms — also announced refunds.
Technical difficulties marred the event, which was billed as golf's first pay-per-view broadcast.
Friday Sports in Brief
Phil Mickelson birdied the fourth playoff hole to beat Tiger Woods in their $9 million made-for-TV match Friday.
Mickelson made a 4-foot birdie putt on a specially set up 93-yard, par 3. The match at Shadow Creek Golf Club finished in the dark with lights set up around the hole.
Mickelson wins match against Woods with birdie on 22nd hole
Phil Mickelson beat Tiger Woods in overtime Friday in their $9 million pay-per-view match in Las Vegas that ended up free for many viewers because of technical problems.

Woods-Mickelson match will be unique experience for viewers
Golf used to have a prominent place on the Thanksgiving weekend calendar with The Skins Game. That made-for-TV event ended in 2008 but Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson will have their own high-stakes showdown Friday.
After years of discussion, the two will compete in "The Match" at Shadow Creek in Las Vegas, a $9 million winner-take-all event that will air on pay-per-view.
Many wondered if a Woods vs. Mickelson match was a thing of the past.
Nicklaus-Palmer still the standard in golf rivalries
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Jack Nicklaus says if he were in a high-stakes match in Las Vegas in his prime, the most compelling opponent would be Arnold Palmer. Never mind that he considers his toughest rival to be Tom Watson. Or that he finished runner-up to Lee Trevino in majors four times in seven years.
With apologies to the super-hyped exhibition between Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson on pay-per-view, any talk of rivalries in golf starts with Nicklaus and Palmer.
Column: The real measure of Tiger vs. Phil is how many watch
The winner between Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson might be the least relevant aspect of their Friday night match in Las Vegas.
Far more compelling was the outcome of a 72-hole exhibition played over two courses for an obscene amount of money — Harry Vardon received nearly seven times more than what he had won from his one-shot victory over Willie Park Jr. in the 1898 British Open.
PGA Tour stop in California desert loses title sponsor
LA QUINTA, Calif. (AP) — The PGA Tour event in the Southern California desert in January will be played as the Desert Classic after losing its title sponsor.
The event returns to the name used when it first began 60 years ago and comedian Bob Hope's name was attached.
The PGA Tour said Thursday that CareerBuilder has decided not to return after three years as title sponsor. It says the tour and local organizers are working to secure a new sponsor for 2020 and beyond.

NAPA, Calif. (AP) — Brendan Steele is trying to win the Safeway Open for the third straight season. He's also eager for the new PGA Tour season because it's a fresh start.
He missed the cuts in four of his last five tournaments.
"I really didn't like how I finished last season," said Steele, set to open with title defense Thursday on the North Course at Silverado Resort and Spa. "I wasn't very good the past few months. I just got confused with what I was doing; I was making the game really hard."

Europe wins back Ryder Cup, beating US 17 1/2-10 1/2
SAINT-QUENTIN-EN-YVELINES, France (AP) — Payback belongs to Europe, and so does the Ryder Cup.
Two years after the Americans thought they had their Ryder Cup problems figured out, Europe reminded them Sunday why it practically has owned this shiny gold trophy for the last quarter-century.
Column: Time for Tiger & Lefty to exit the Ryder Cup stage
SAINT-QUENTIN-EN-YVELINES, France (AP) — Phil Mickelson watched the ball splash into the pond in front of the 16th green and knew he was done. No need to hit any more errant shots on a day filled with them. Lefty removed his cap and stuck out his right hand to Francesco Molinari, carrying out golf's version of the white flag.
Europe finishes off dominant week to win back Ryder Cup
SAINT-QUENTIN-EN-YVELINES, France (AP) — Europe waited two long years for that one moment when the Ryder Cup was back in its hands.
Exactly when it happened Sunday was unclear, making it all the better.
At roughly the same time, in two singles matches on two greens at Le Golf National separated by 150 yards of water, Francesco Molinari and Sergio Garcia each made par to secure at least a half-point, either one giving Europe the 14½ points it needed to regain the Ryder Cup from the Americans.

EUROPEAN STREAK: Europe now has won nine of the last 12 times in the Ryder Cup and has not lost at home since 1993.
WINLESS: Tiger Woods went 0-4, failing to contribute a point for the first time in eight Ryder Cups.
‘Vamos!’: Garcia firing up Europe at Ryder Cup
SAINT-QUENTIN-EN-YVELINES, France (AP) — Sergio Garcia and Phil Mickelson were handed captain's picks for the Ryder Cup as much for their value in the team room as out on the course.
Only one of the veterans is delivering on both fronts at Le Golf National.
