SAO PAULO (AP) — Five-time Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton has a two-step plan for keeping the new generation of talented drivers behind him next season: match their youthful hunger and outwit them with the experience that comes with age.

The Russian driver is making a surprise return to Formula One in 2019 with the team which dropped him last year for Pierre Gasly, who in turn moves up to the main Red Bull team.
BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas had the fastest lap on the final day of Formula One testing in Barcelona on Wednesday.
Bottas had a time of 1 minute, 16.904 seconds at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, just ahead of Ferrari reserve driver Antonio Giovinazzi.
McLaren's young reserve driver Lando Norris was third fastest.

SHANGHAI (AP) — A week ago, Toro Rosso driver Pierre Gasly came from nowhere to finish in fourth place in the Bahrain Grand Prix.
He and his team treated it like a victory.
"I must say, it's been amazing," Gasly said of his "success" as he prepares for Sunday's Chinese Grand Prix, the third race of the season.

They quickly got used to it, though, and the season will start in Australia in three weeks with few complaints about the odd-looking shield implemented to improve safety.
Most say that, as ugly as the halo may look, it won't cause a major impact on racing.

MONTMELO, Spain (AP) — Force India, Toro Rosso and Haas unveiled their new cars for the 2018 Formula One season shortly before preseason testing began on Monday.
Sergio Perez and Esteban Ocon pulled the tarp off Force India's pink-and-white car, dubbed the VJM11.
Perez and Ocon return for Force India after a good 2017, when the team finished fourth in the standings behind Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull.
Toro Rosso eyeing Hartley and Gasly for 2018
MEXICO CITY (AP) — Toro Rosso boss Franz Tost said Friday there's a "high possibility" that Mexican Grand Prix drivers Pierre Gasly and Brendon Hartley will make up the team's lineup for 2018.
Hartley made his Formula One debut last week at the U.S. Grand Prix in Austin and finished 13th and is the first F1 driver from New Zealand in more than 30 years. French driver Gasly made his debut in Malaysia.

The 23-year-old Russian driver has four points from 14 races which led to Team principal Franz Tost says Kvyat's poor performances led to them "standing him down for the next races."
Tost says Kvyat "has not really shown his true potential so far this year," citing technical problems and "mistakes of his own making."
