Forecasts call for snow to start early Friday and later turn over to sleet and around midday. Travel conditions are expected to be slippery.

Maine warns firms of unauthorized solicitation attempt
AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Maine's secretary of state is warning businesses about a misleading solicitation attempt that is targeting companies in the Pine Tree State.
Secretary of State Matt Dunlap says the solicitors are sending mailings using the name Workplace Compliance Services. The mailings come with an offer to file annual reports on behalf of companies for a fee of $160.
South Korea sends insecticide to North to save pine trees
SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korea sent about 50 tons of insecticide to North Korea on Thursday to help stop a pine tree disease from spreading.
The move was the latest in a series of goodwill gestures between the rival Koreas to improve relations amid larger negotiations between Washington and Pyongyang to resolve the nuclear standoff.
South Korea's Unification Ministry said trucks carrying the chemicals crossed the border and unloaded them at the North Korean border town of Kaesong.

Towering pines will come down in NH city due to blight
CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — New Hampshire's capital city is cutting down a group of towering white pine trees due to a poorly understood disease that is affecting them.
The Concord Monitor reports city officials believe the trees have a type of needle blight. That means 22 white pines will be removed. That is the recommended course of action when white pine needle blight is found in a woodlot.

Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife biologists and game warden pilots are conducting the survey of the iconic bird. It nearly disappeared from Maine in the 1970s, when there were only 39 pairs remaining. There were more than 634 nesting pairs in the state in 2013.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Several Omaha residents are against the proposed installation of an AT&T cell tower disguised as a pine tree.
The 92-foot (28-meter) tower would be placed at the main entrance to Omaha's Memorial Park, according to the plan proposed by the cellphone provider and the Brownell Talbot School. The tower would sit between the private schools' parking lot and the park.
Warmer, wetter springs damaging pine needles
DURHAM, N.H. (AP) — University of New Hampshire researchers say warmer, wetter springs have been contributing to the yellowing and loss of white pine tree needles in the state.
They say since 2010, White Pine Needle Damage has become more widespread. Infected trees experience a yellowing of mature needles and loss of foliage.
Researchers are assessing the impacts of the disease on tree health and productivity, and developing guidelines for land managers.
BASS RIVER TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) — The New Jersey Forest Fire Service readily admits it can't see the forest for the trees.
Even when fire spotters climb to the top of the 80-foot Bass River State Forest fire tower, their view is blocked on three sides by nearby pines that have grown to the tower's height.
The tower oversees an area of about 50,000 residents — mostly to the east — in places like Little Egg Harbor Township, Tuckerton, Bass River and Eagleswood Township.

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York environmental officials say a beetle that poses a significant threat to pine forests has been found in Albany, the farthest north it has been detected in the Northeast.
The Department of Environmental Conservation says a single southern pine beetle was caught in a trap in the Albany Pine Bush Preserve. The agency has been monitoring the spread of the invasive pests which have killed thousands of pine trees on Long Island since 2014.
SLIDELL, La. (AP) — Fire crews have burned a small section of a wildlife refuge to benefit longleaf pine trees, which require periodic fires to thrive, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said.
Most of the 38,500-acre Bogue Chitto National Wildlife Reserve is in Louisiana and its headquarters is in Slidell, but Wednesday's burn was in Pearl River County, Mississippi.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexican environmental inspectors said Wednesday they found 7.4 acres (3 hectares) of illegal avocado plantations in the Monarch butterfly wintering grounds west of Mexico City.
It's apparently the first time that a wave of avocado planting has had a significant, direct effect on the heart of the Monarch area, a protected nature reserve.
Anglers wanted as Maine holds free fishing weekend in state
AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Maine is inviting everyone in the state to participate in a free fishing weekend on the Pine Tree State's thousands of miles of waterways.
The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife is hosting the free fishing weekend on Saturday and Sunday. Anyone can fish for free without a license, with the exception of people who have had their licenses suspended or revoked.
Middle schoolers to try to visit every state park in Maine
THORNDIKE, Maine (AP) — Students from a Maine middle school are attempting to visit every state park in the Pine Tree State this year.
The students are from Mount View Middle School in Thorndike. The Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry says the students got started in early February by picking up park passports and maps from Commissioner Walt Whitcomb.

Neither of Maine's long-shot bids to lure Amazon to the Pine Tree State has made the cut.
Seattle-based Amazon on Thursday named 20 cities that are still in consideration for a second headquarters. Proposals in Brunswick and Scarborough were not on the list.
Amazon plans to invest $5 billion in the new headquarters and could employ as many as 50,000 people in and around the city it chooses.
Pine beetles continue to spread in southwest Colorado
CORTEZ, Colo. (AP) — Officials say a beetle infestation targeting ponderosa pine trees is continuing to spread across the San Juan National Forest in southwestern Colorado.
The Cortez Journal reports the round-headed pine beetle has primarily infested or killed more than 10,500 acres of the 90,000 acres of manageable ponderosa stands in the Dolores District of the forest since 2011.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — State forestry officials say five Arkansas counties may be at risk of an outbreak of beetle that causes damage to pine trees.
The Arkansas Forestry Commission says aerial surveys revealed 102 spots from the Ips beetle in Clark, Dallas, Hot Spring, Ouachita and Pike counties. The Ips beetle is a native bark beetle that can damage pine trees, particularly ones that are weakened by drought or disease.
Falling pine tree in Rome crushes taxi, injuring driver
ROME (AP) — A pine tree has crushed a taxi in Rome, injuring the driver but leaving two passengers uninjured.
The taxi was going through a piazza near the Tiber river on Monday when the tree fell on the vehicle. Branches struck two other cars but without causing injuries.
Toppling street trees are a known hazard in Rome. Falling threes injured four people earlier this year. In 2013, a tree killed a man on a motorcycle.
Jack pines harvested to provide seeds and regenerate forests
BRIGHTON, Mich. (AP) — Officials say about 33 acres of overgrown jack pine trees in Livingston County are being harvested to provide seeds for new trees around Michigan.
The trees are at the Department of Natural Resources' Tree Improvement Center near Brighton.

MAYBELL, Colo. (AP) — A lightning-caused wildfire in northwestern Colorado is threatening some structures as erratic winds push the flames in multiple directions.
Fire managers said Monday the Pine Tree Fire has burned about 7 square miles (18 square kilometers) in grassland, sagebrush and small trees. It started Saturday.
The fire is about 15 miles (24 kilometers) south of the town of Maybell and 200 miles (320 kilometers) northwest of Denver.
Watchdog: Accountability lacking for Pine Tree program
AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — A report suggests a program created by then-Maine Gov. John Baldacci to spur development in economically depressed areas is not helping much, and some lawmakers are ready to scrap the program.
The Office of Program Evaluation and Government Accountability recommended a major overhaul of the Pine Tree Development Zone program, saying it lacks accountability to assess its true capacity to create jobs.
Officials plan to cut down and sell infested pine trees
RUTLAND, Vt. (AP) — A city in Vermont is planning to harvest thousands of pine trees before they become infested by insects and fungus.
The Rutland Board of Alderman approved the first three timber sales for the soon-to-be harvested trees Monday. The Rutland Herald reports (http://bit.ly/2vo7oci ) that an insect called the red pine scale has begun killing the trees, alongside an associated fungus.

It's an area that has tent cabins and wooden cabins that are utilized by park visitors and park employees, but no one else was injured in the accident Sunday.
