Columbia's public art organization One Columbia has teamed up with city poet laureate Ed Madden to create "Rain Poetry."
Madden solicited poems over the last year, and they were stenciled onto sidewalks around the city. The material used to paint the writings only shows up when wet.

Mayor Marty Walsh announced Monday that Porsha Olayiwola will formally begin her role on Jan. 1.
Olayiwola is the artistic director of MassLEAP, a nonprofit organization that serves young artists. She also co-founded The House Slam, which offers poetry slams and open mic events.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — The widely honored Mexican novelist and poet Fernando del Paso has died at the age of 83.
The University of Guadalajara said Del Paso died Wednesday, but did not give a cause of death. He had been director of the university's library.
Del Paso was best known for his historical novel "News From the Empire" about the brief reign of Emperor Maximilian in Mexico.
Tony Hoagland, witty, prize-winning poet, dead at 64
NEW YORK (AP) — Tony Hoagland, a prize-winning poet admired for his candor and sharp, off-beat humor, has died at age 64.
Jeff Shotts, executive editor of Graywolf Press, told The Associated Press that Hoagland died Tuesday at his home in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The cause was pancreatic cancer.

LONDON (AP) — American performance poet Danez Smith has won the prestigious Forward Prize for the collection "Don't Call Us Dead."
At 29, the poet from St. Paul, Minnesota is the youngest-ever winner of the 10,000 pound ($13,000) award, founded in 1992.
Smith, who uses the gender-neutral pronoun "they," was praised for "jubilant and confrontational" verses reflecting their experiences as a young, HIV-positive African American.

NEW YORK (AP) — Five young poets have received fellowships worth more than $25,000 apiece.
On Tuesday, the Poetry Foundation and Poetry magazine announced this year's winners of the Ruth Lilly and Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Poetry Fellowship. The poets are Safia Elhillo, Hieu Minh Nguyen, sam sax, Natalie Scenters-Zapico, and Paul Tran. With prize money totaling $129,000, each will be given $25,800.
Poet Sonia Sanchez wins $100,000 prize
NEW YORK (AP) — Poet and author Sonia Sanchez has won a $100,000 lifetime achievement prize.
The Academy of American Poets announced Tuesday that Sanchez is this year's winner of the Wallace Stevens Award. Sanchez, 83, is known for such collections as "Shake Loose My Skin: New and Selected Poems."
Writing program helps inmates behind bars find their voice
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — A nonprofit organization is helping inmates at jails across New Mexico express themselves through poetry, spoken word and journaling.
Rachel Martinez told the Albuquerque Journal that from a young age, her life has been a cycle of drug abuse and incarceration.
She is one of the inmates at the Metropolitan Detention Center participating in workshops by JustWrite.
Writer, teacher Robley Wilson dies in Florida at age 88
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Writer Robley Wilson, a novelist and poet whose works won numerous awards and who also was an editor and teacher, has died at his home in Florida. He was 88.
His wife, writer Susan Hubbard, confirmed Sunday in an email that Wilson died on Aug. 7 in Orlando surrounded by "family, cats, books, and music."
Wilson wrote three poetry collections, including "Kingdoms of the Ordinary," and novels such as "After Paradise," ''The World Still Melting" and "Who Will Hear Your Secrets"

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Tony Roy stood on the sidewalk next to Pratt Street on Tuesday afternoon, watching a spoken word poetry performance and thumbing through his phone.
Roy, a teacher at Connecticut River Academy, was considering sharing his own poem when one of the performers caught his attention and beckoned him to come into the street. The crowd began to chant his name over and over, so he read his poem, written for a hip hop movement club he runs.
