Provocative sculpture rejected by Louvre finds new home
PARIS (AP) — A huge sculpture deemed too obscene for the regal gardens of the Louvre Museum has found a new home at Paris' edgier Pompidou Center.
The art work was unveiled Tuesday in front of the Pompidou modern art museum. The piece, made of cubical containers, suggests an abstract pair having sex.
Artist Joep Van Lieshout told The Associated Press his sculpture, titled "Domestikator," is meant to represent the domestication of the Earth by humans and the evolution of robotics and big data.
Going deaf has sharpened my art, David Hockney says
PARIS (AP) — Renowned British painter David Hockney says his hearing loss has helped sharpen his sense of space and perspective.
Speaking Tuesday at a retrospective of his work at Paris' Pompidou Center, Hockney said: "If you lose one sense, you gain other senses, and I feel I could see space clearer. I put it down to the hearing loss. ... I can't tell what sound is coming from where."
Ever curious and innovative, the 80-year-old artist said he's currently working on reverse perspective paintings.
Russian oligarch leads art donation to Paris museum
PARIS (AP) — An exhibition with more than 250 works of Russian and Soviet art, donated by one of Russia's richest oligarchs, opened Tuesday at the Pompidou Center in Paris.
Vladimir Potanin, who wasn't present for the formal opening, initiated the donation of the art to France's national modern art museum in a bid to strengthen cultural ties.
He has previously described the collection as "a symbolic act that aims to encourage Russian art in living culture."
