Power outages drop; state emergency declared in Grand Rapids
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has declared a state of emergency in Grand Rapids, qualifying the city for additional assistance as it copes with power outages and cleans up from storms.
Whitmer says the declaration gives Grand Rapids additional resources beyond what it's already receiving from state agencies such as the emergency management division of the state police. Ice and fierce winds last week in western Michigan knocked down power lines and tree limbs.

MPUC to investigate power outage complaints in rural towns
HALLOWELL, Maine (AP) — The Maine Public Utilities Commission staff is recommending an investigation into complaints against Central Maine Power by residents in the Dover-Foxcroft, Jackman and Caratunk service areas.
The PUC staff recommends merging three different complaints into one investigation of complaints that the frequency and duration of power outages have become unacceptable.
CMP previously requested that all three complaints be dismissed.
Winter storm leads to avalanche, crashes across Utah
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A powerful winter storm has left a trail of traffic accidents, power outages and even an avalanche across Utah.
Little Cottonwood Canyon reopened Tuesday morning, a day after an avalanche closed the canyon and State Route 210.
Meanwhile, state troopers reported more than 200 crashes on highways in the last three days.
2 ½-hour power outage impacts terminal at Madison airport
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A power outage impacted terminal operations at the Madison airport for about 2 ½ hours.
The outage at the Dane County Regional Airport happened shortly before 5:30 a.m. Monday, and a backup generator also failed. Airport spokesman Brent McHenry told WMTV that passengers could not get on or off planes.
After power was restored, passengers were urged to check with their airlines about the status of flights.

Alaska Airlines flights back in the air after power outage
SEATTLE (AP) — Alaska Airlines flights are back in the air after a nationwide ground stop that was apparently caused by a power outage.
The airline says all its flights were grounded between about 4:20 a.m. and 5:15 a.m. Sunday after a power outage in the Seattle area, where its operations are based.
Airline spokeswoman Oriana Branon says the power went out around 3:30 a.m. and came back on about an hour and a half later.
Data shows Maine had most frequent, longest power outages
BANGOR, Maine (AP) — Data shows that Maine electricity customers had longer and more frequent power outages than any other state in 2017.
Maine Public Radio reports data collected by the federal Energy Information Administration shows Maine electricity users average three service interruptions in 2017. The service failures lasted over 40 hours on average.
Raccoon causes brief power outage in Florida community
KISSIMMEE, Fla. (AP) — Officials say a hungry raccoon caused a brief power for more than 3,000 customers in central Florida.
Kissimmee Utility Authority spokesman Chris Gent tells the Orlando Sentinel the raccoon climbed inside the utility's airport substation on Sunday afternoon and downed three primary feeder lines.
Power was restored about 30 minutes later to the 3,218 affected customers.
