Anisimova beats Zhang to reach her 1st final at age 17
TOKYO (AP) — American qualifier Amanda Anisimova is in her first WTA final at age 17 after upsetting top-seeded Zhang Shuai of China 7-6 (4), 7-5 at the Japan Women's Open on Saturday.
Trailing 5-4 in the second set, Anisimova hit two fierce winners down the line and went on to win with her first match point as Zhang's backhand went long.
Anisimova, who turned 17 just two weeks ago, is the youngest player to reach a final since 16-year-old Donna Vekic at Tashkent in 2012 and Birmingham in 2013.
NANCHANG, China (AP) — Top-seeded Zhang Shuai moved into the Jiangxi Open quarterfinals for the first time after beating Margarita Gasparyan 6-4, 6-1 on Wednesday.
World No. 32 Zhang, the top-ranked Chinese player, needed around 90 minutes for the second-round win over her Russian opponent, who earned her first WTA main-draw win in more than two years when she beat Shilin Xu in the first round.
NANCHANG, China (AP) — Former Russia Fed Cup player Margarita Gasparyan earned her first WTA main-draw win in more than two years at the Jiangxi Open on Monday.
Gasparyan beat former qualifier and former junior world No. 1 Shilin Xu 6-1, 6-4.
Gasparyan won WTA singles (1) and doubles (2) titles in 2015 and played for Russia in 2016 then fell off the main tour because of injuries.
PRAGUE (AP) — Second-seeded Petra Kvitova cruised into the quarterfinals of the Prague Open with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over unseeded Russian Natalia Vikhlyantseva on Wednesday.
Kvitova will face fellow Czech Katerina Siniakova, who prevailed 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 over another Russian, Ekaterina Alexandrova.
Sixth-seeded Shuai Zhang of China eliminated Romanian qualifier Elena-Gabriela Ruse 6-4, 6-4, wile seventh-seeded Mihaela Buzarnescu dispatched another qualifier, Antonia Lottner of Germany, 6-0, 7-6 (7).
Top-seeded Svitolina beats Wang to reach Dubai quarters
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Defending champion Elina Svitolina needed more than two hours to overcome Qiang Wang 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 Wednesday and reach the quarterfinals of the Dubai Championships.
However, French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko's slumped to her sixth loss in nine matches, and fourth opening-match loss of the season. The 20-year-old Latvian, who had a bye in the first round, lost 6-1, 7-5 to Russian veteran Elena Vesnina.
Charleston touring tennis professional Shelby Rogers advanced to the quarterfinals of the $250,000 WTA Tour tournament in Strasbourg, France, on Wednesday with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over 50th-ranked Qiang Wang of China.
Rogers, ranked 55th, will oppose another Chinese player, No. 8 seed Shuai Peng, in the quarterfinals. Peng, who hits two-handed from both sides, defeated wild card Amandine Hesse of France in the round of 16.
PRAGUE (AP) — Defending champion Lucie Safarova withdrew from the Prague Open on Wednesday ahead of her second-round match against Kristyna Pliskova because of illness.
Organizers said she was ill before the tournament and her condition worsened after her 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 victory over Kristina Kucova on Tuesday.
In the quarterfinals, Pliskova will face 144th-ranked Beatriz Haddad Maia. The Brazilian qualifier beat fourth-seeded Sam Stosur 6-3, 6-2.
PRAGUE (AP) — Top-seeded Karolina Pliskova was eliminated from the Prague Open on Monday, losing to unseeded Camila Giorgi 7-6 (6), 6-2 in the first round.
It was the first victory for the 90th-ranked Italian over the world No. 3 in four matchups, and a blow to Czech chances in their home event.
It was the earliest loss for Pliskova, the U.S. Open finalist, since June.
Heather Watson advances in BNP Paribas Open
Indian Wells, Calif. (AP) — Britain's Heather Watson beat American Nicole Gibbs 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 on Wednesday in the first round of the BNP Paribas Open.
Watson will face No. 11 Johanna Konta in the second round.
Former No. 1 Martina Hingis and double partner Yung-Jan Chan beat Raquel Atawo and Yifan Xu 6-1, 6-4.
