Jets’ Darnold unfazed by all the attention after 1st NFL win
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — The kid has a sense of humor, too.
Sam Darnold kept a straight face for a split-second as he answered a question about what he could've done differently on his first pass in the New York Jets' season opener in Detroit.
You know, the one that was intercepted and returned for a touchdown before many fans were even settled into their seats Monday night.
Darnold recovers from 1st-play pick-6, helps Jets rout Lions
DETROIT (AP) — Sam Darnold rolled right and made a rookie move, lobbing a football across the field that was picked off and returned for a touchdown.
It might've been his only mistake all night.
Darnold made a stellar debut after throwing a pick-6 on his first NFL snap, and the New York Jets intercepted five passes and also scored on special teams in a 48-17 rout over the Detroit Lions on Monday night.
Jets’ Sam Darnold throws pick-6 on first career play
DETROIT (AP) — Sam Darnold had nowhere to go but up after his first career snap.
The rookie quarterback steadied himself quickly.
Darnold threw an interception on his very first NFL play, and Detroit's Quandre Diggs returned it 37 yards for a touchdown to give the Lions an early lead over the New York Jets on Monday night. But by halftime, the Jets were up 17-10, and Darnold's debut was looking a lot better.
Lions sign Diggs to contract extension
ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) — Defensive back Quandre Diggs and the Detroit Lions agreed to terms Monday on a contract extension that will carry through the 2021 NFL season.
Detroit's sixth-round draft pick (200th overall) in 2015 out of Texas, Diggs is entering his fourth NFL season. He has appeared in 44 career games with 19 starts. His career totals include 131 tackles (110 solo), three interceptions, 16 pass defenses, three forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and one sack.
Allen Park — Over the past several days, leading up to the NFL draft, we've taken a position-by-position look at the Detroit Lions' roster situation, evaluating how the team might address these positions during the event. Today we close out the series with the secondary.
Current roster: Darius Slay, Teez Tabor, Nevin Lawson, DeShawn Shead, Quandre Diggs, Jamal Agnew, Adairius Barnes, Glover Quin, Tavon Wilson, Miles Killebrew, Stefan McClure, Rolan Milligan, Charles Washington
The Relative Athletic Score (RAS) system was developed by Kent Lee Platte in 2012 to provide fans with a contextualized score on a 0-10 scale, making it easier to understand how athletic draft prospects are when compared to their position dating back to 1987.
Allen Park — Glued to the bench early in the season, Detroit Lions rookie cornerback Teez Tabor had finally managed to carve out a role down the stretch.
He played a season-high 44 snaps in Weeks 15 and 16, and with Nevin Lawson out with a concussion, appeared primed to see the field even more in the finale. But his day ended in the first quarter, when his arm was injured in a three-way collision with Packers wide receiver Randall Cobb and safety Quandre Diggs.
Here are reactions to notable moments during Sunday's Detroit Lions at Cincinnati Bengals game, compiled by Eric Coughlin of The Detroit News.
Halftime: Lions 7, Bengals 6
The first half ended with the Lions up, 7-6, and the Falcons down, 13-0, but Detroit fans were left wanting more, especially on offense:
Detroit — He's under pressure, constantly. They're under pressure, constantly.
But go ahead and say this about Matthew Stafford and the Lions: They're getting more comfortable handling the duress.
During the Lions second drive of the game, Darius Slay headed back to the locker room and being evaluated for a concussion.
Tampa, Fla. — When Quandre Diggs saw the flag, and heard the ruling he was being penalized for unnecessary roughness against a defenseless receiver, the Lions defensive back initial concern was his bank account.
"First thing that goes through my mind is that's 50 racks, gone," Diggs said. "I told the ref, 'Y'all trying to take all my check.'"
Tampa, Fla. — The Detroit Lions benefited from a ruling that one former general manager said he's never seen before.
Late in the first quarter against the Buccaneers on Sunday, wide receiver Mike Evans caught a deep pass across the middle, only to have the ball dislodged by a big hit from Lions safety Quandre Diggs. Cornerback Darius Slay quickly scooped up the loose ball.
Allen Park — It was widely assumed the Lions would turn to Miles Killebrew when starting strong safety Tavon Wilson suffered a season-ending shoulder injury, but Killebrew was on the field for a paltry seven of the team's 64 defensive snaps against the Ravens on Sunday.
Charles Washington, the team's other backup safety, got five snaps of work.
Instead, the Lions looked to an unexpected option to fill in for Wilson, moving nickelback Quandre Diggs into the role for the afternoon.
Green Bay, Wis. — It was midway through the third quarter and the Green Bay Packers still had a pulse.
Down 14 points and at midfield, the Packers faced a fourth-and-2. Going for it was an easy choice and the play call was a good one against the man-coverage look the Lions were showing. Wide receiver Randall Cobb motioned from the far right of the formation and took a pass from quarterback Brett Hundley, a sort of jet sweep.
Allen Park – Detroit Lions defensive tackle A'Shawn Robinson escaped an additional fine from the NFL after he was ejected for throwing a punch against the Pittsburgh Steelers last Sunday. Several of his teammates weren't so lucky.
