Montreal making a (big) move as MLS season winds down
The North is making noise in the East.
And no, it's not Toronto FC.
The Montreal Impact are unexpectedly in the MLS playoff picture after a steady climb up the standings.
The Impact plummeted to second-to-last place in the Eastern Conference in the 12th week of the season. But they currently sit in sixth — and just above the line for postseason contention. They're five points in front of seventh-place D.C. United, their opponent on Saturday at Audi Field.
Silva leads Impact in 4-1 win over Union
CHESTER, Pa. (AP) — Alejandro Silva scored twice off assists from Ignacio Piatti and the Montreal Impact beat the Philadelphia Union 4-1 on Saturday night.
Silva capped a breakaway in the 28th minute to tie it at 1. Silva ran behind Piatti's lead pass and slotted it past the onrushing goalkeeper from outside the penalty area.
Silva and Piatti connected with a give-and-go at the end of another breakaway in the 76th minute to cap the scoring.
SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Raul Ruidiaz scored his first MLS goal in his first league start to help the Seattle Sounders beat the last-place San Jose Earthquakes 1-0 on Wednesday night.
Seattle (6-9-5) is unbeaten in its last five games. San Jose (2-12-6) has gone 11 games without a win, including three straight losses.
Ruidiaz chested down a pass from Cristian Roldan near the penalty area on a breakaway and one-touched a shot inside the far post in the 62nd minute.
SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Jahmir Hyka scored in the closing minutes to help the San Jose Earthquakes to a 2-2 draw with the Houston Dynamo on Saturday night.
Hyka, in his first MLS action of the season, came on in the 67th minute and first-timed a feed from Quincy Amarikwa to make it 2-2 in the 85th. Florian Jungwirth's cross from the right flank floated through the box to Amarikwa, who tapped it to Hyka for the finish — which deflected off defender Adolfo Machado.
Earthquakes clinch playoff spot, beat Minnesota 3-2
SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Marco Urena scored in the third minute of stoppage time and the San Jose Earthquakes secured a playoff spot with a 3-2 victory over Minnesota United on Sunday in their regular-season finale.
San Jose (13-14-7) needed a win for the final spot in the Western Conference after FC Dallas' 5-1 victory over the Los Angeles Galaxy. It's an unexpected run for the Earthquakes, who fired coach Dominic Kinnear midway through the season.
Sporting beats Quakes 2-1, 1st win in San Jose since 2000
