Rabies confirmed in raccoon involved in altercation with dog
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Health authorities say rabies has been confirmed in a raccoon involved in an altercation with a dog in western Pennsylvania.
The Allegheny County health department said the dog involved in the incident in Upper St. Clair was up-to-date on its rabies vaccinations.
This is the first report of a rabid animal in the county this year. Last year, 25 animals were confirmed to have rabies in the county: a dozen raccoons, nine bats, two cats, a fox and a groundhog.

2 foxes in Flagstaff test positive for rabies
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) — Two foxes that were captured in Flagstaff have tested positive for rabies.
The Coconino County Public Health Services District says the foxes had attacked people and animals in east Flagstaff and near Lowell Observatory.
The four people are being treated, and the two dogs are under quarantine for 45 days.
Arizona police respond to rabid fox calls in Flagstaff area
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) — Police officials say they have responded to several calls about rabid foxes in the Flagstaff area.
The police department said Monday a fox believed to have rabies jumped into the bed of a pickup truck and bit someone before running away Sunday. A fox believed to be the same one was captured a few hours later after another attack was reported. A second fox believed to be rabid was captured Sunday after it bit a person.

HARTFORD, Vt. (AP) — Vermont authorities say a bobcat that bit three people in Hartford this week had rabies.
The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department says two women were attacked by a bobcat on Wednesday. State game wardens shot the animal.
The department says a man who saw media coverage of the attacks said he stopped to take a photo of a bobcat in the same area the day before and the animal entered his car and bit him.

MIAMI (AP) — Public health officials say an otter that bit a person tested positive for rabies in one Miami-Dade County neighborhood.
The Miami Herald reports that it's the first rabid otter identified in the county this year.
Department of Health officials say the otter bit a person and the animal later died. Four people may have been exposed and were told to seek treatment.

The Tazewell County Health Department confirmed the rabid bat bite this week.
The Journal Star reports it was the second rabid bat bite reported in the Peoria area this fall. Late in September a rabid bat bit a dog in Chillicothe. The dog was quarantined and given another round of rabies shots.
Officials issue alert after rabid cat found in Miami-Dade
MIAMI (AP) — Florida health officials have issued a 60-day alert in Miami-Dade County after a second cat tested positive for rabies this year.
The Florida Department of Health announced the alert Tuesday morning. It covers a limited area in North Miami Beach and will last until Dec. 14.
An earlier alert following the discovery of the first rabid cat is set to end Nov. 24. It covers another area in North Miami Beach.

The Douglas County Health Department said Wednesday that the bat was found on the ground at Morton Middle School on Friday afternoon. The bat was sent to a state lab and tested positive for the infectious disease.

Bat tested positive for rabies at Grand Canyon
GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK, Ariz. (AP) — A bat collected from the bottom of the Grand Canyon has tested positive for rabies.
Park officials said Friday that visitors have reported an uptick in bats along the Colorado River.
No one is known to have come in contact with the rabid bat. It was taken from Phantom Ranch in late August and tested.

LOXLEY, Ala. (AP) — Alabama's most popular county for tourism is facing a problem with attacks by rabid foxes.
Officials say they've confirmed eight attacks by foxes infected with rabies in coastal Baldwin County since May. The fast-growing county includes the state's prime beach areas, although no tourists have reportedly been affected.

2nd rabid skunk in 3 weeks found in Allentown
ALLENTOWN, Pa. (AP) — Authorities say a second skunk in three weeks has tested positive for rabies in the eastern Pennsylvania city of Allentown, and like the earlier case the animal came into contact with at least one dog.
Officials say the skunk was picked up Wednesday about a half-mile southeast of where a rabid skunk was picked up after contact with two dogs July 30.
Annual anti-rabies bait drop begins across Vermont
BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — Vermont's annual anti-rabies bait drop is underway in much of the state.
About 450,000 rabies vaccine packs are expected to be distributed across 110 communities in nine Vermont counties as part of an effort to stop the spread of the disease among wild animals.
In some area the bait will be dropped from airplanes. In residential areas the bait will be placed by hand.
