Etling TD pass, run lead Pats over Giants to end preseason
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — It takes a lot to put a smile on Bill Belichick's face and get a handshake from the stoic New England Patriots coach in the fourth game of the preseason. Third-string quarterback Danny Etling did it all on one play.
In a meaningless game Thursday night in which neither team played their starters, Etling added a lighthearted moment to the contest and iced the Patriots' 17-12 win with an 86-yard run on an option keeper that totally fooled the New York Giants' defense.
Vanderbilt leans on Shurmur looking for 2nd bowl in 3 years
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Vanderbilt's all-time leading rusher is gone, currently trying to earn a job in the NFL with the New England Patriots.
With Ralph Webb out of the picture, luckily for the Commodores they have quarterback Kyle Shurmur back to follow up one of the best seasons in school history and help Vanderbilt earn its second bowl berth in three years. Coach Derek Mason calls Shurmur one of the most dynamic quarterbacks in the Southeastern Conference to lead that group.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — New England might have found a running back in undrafted free agent Ralph Webb.
Washington may have lost one with a knee injury to second-round pick Derrius Guice.

Vandy whips Tennessee 42-24 to cap Vols’ dismal season
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Vanderbilt's Ralph Webb ended his career as the sixth-leading rusher in Southeastern Conference history.
He may prefer to be known as the guy who helped change the direction of the Vanderbilt-Tennessee rivalry.
Webb ran for 163 yards and two touchdowns in his final college game Saturday as Vanderbilt whipped Tennessee 42-24 to beat the Volunteers for the fourth time in the last six years. Vanderbilt had gone 1-28 against Tennessee from 1983-2011.
Gamecocks have avoided being caught in Vanderbilt’s Webb
COLUMBIA — Ralph Webb is having an un-Ralph Webb season, heading into Saturday’s game at South Carolina with a mere 408 rushing yards this season.

Vandy ready to take to air to ease focus on Webb, run game
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Defenses keep daring Vanderbilt to throw, determined to stop the Commodores' all-time leading rusher and one of the best ever in the Southeastern Conference.
So that's coach Derek Mason plans to do.
"We're not abandoning the run," Mason said Tuesday. "I just think you got to rethink what your process is and really put it in the hands of guys that can work for you now to help us balance out what we're going through right now."
Vanderbilt looking to expand offense with Webb, Shurmur
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Vanderbilt offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig has been very busy this offseason trying to take full advantage of having the Commodores' all-time leading rusher back for a senior season.
Ralph Webb ranks 20th all-time in Southeastern Conference history with 3,342 yards rushing and could climb past some big names with a strong season. Ludwig has added some plays use both Webb and a talented group of running backs.
Webb is looking forward to every opportunity he gets.

Vanderbilt hoping QB Kyle Shurmur picks up where he left off
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Kyle Shurmur is happy doing whatever it takes to help Vanderbilt win whether that is handing the ball off or throwing down the field.
The way the quarterback has grown this season, coach Derek Mason believes the best is yet to come.
No. 24 Tennessee, Vandy end season jostling for bowl spots
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Vanderbilt center Barrett Gouger knows how he'd like to see Ralph Webb become the Commodores' all-time leading rusher: Break off a 28-yard run and get it over with quickly.
The way No. 24 Tennessee has defended the run lately, that could come on Webb's first carry. Not that the Commodores are taking that for granted no matter how the Vols have struggled.
"That doesn't necessarily mean it's just like an automatic thing for everyone," Gouger said.

Georgia Tech bracing for power runs from Vandy’s Webb
ATLANTA (AP) — Georgia Tech's relentless spread-option attack with its triple-option potential is known for causing sleepless nights for defensive coordinators.

Webb ran for a career-high 211 yards and two touchdowns as Vanderbilt easily handled the weather delay and beat Middle Tennessee 47-24 Saturday.
