Rauner names cabinet members to cover for retiring aides
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Gov. Bruce Rauner has named three cabinet members to replace top aides who are retiring.
The Republican named replacements Friday for Transportation Secretary Randall Blankenhorn, Agriculture Director Raymond Poe and Kirk Lonbom, secretary of the Department of Innovation and Technology.
Each is retiring Dec. 31. Rauner will leave the governor's office Jan. 14 when Democratic Gov.-elect J.B. Pritzker is inaugurated.
New 5-day bike ride to feature Illinois farms, vineyards
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Bicyclists will get to tour central Illinois farms, vineyards and breweries during a new, five-day ride scheduled as part of Illinois' Bicentennial celebration.
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — The Illinois State Fair's theme is the latest homage to the state's ongoing bicentennial celebration.
The Illinois Department of Agriculture announced Wednesday that this year's state fair's theme is "Celebrate Illinois: 200 Years of Amazing!" The Du Quoin State Fair will also have the same theme.
Agriculture Director Raymond Poe says the state fair is the "perfect place to showcase the state's 200-year history."
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — The state of Illinois is looking for gardeners interested in planting at the Illinois State Fair Grandstand race track's community garden this season.
The Illinois Department of Agriculture says there are 200 garden plots available at the Springfield site, including 100 for organic gardening and 100 for non-organic gardening. Plots cost $20.

Luke Sailer of Chatham was appointed the Department of Agriculture's Division Manager of Fair and Promotional Services. He previously was assistant Illinois State Fair manager. In addition to the state fair in Springfield, the division manages the Du Quoin State Fair, county fairs and horse racing.
The 25-year-old Carmi native succeeds Kevin Gordon, who retired after leading the fair in 2016 and 2017.
Group tops promised 200 trees donated to state fairgrounds
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Arborists are planting 53 trees at the Illinois State Fairgrounds as part of a trade association's ongoing "trecovery" effort.
The Illinois Green Industry Association promised in 2015 to donate 200 trees to the Illinois Department of Agriculture to replace those destroyed by the emerald ash borer. The beetle's larvae feed on and destroy ash trees.
10 agriculture projects in Illinois to receive $550,000
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Ten agriculture-related projects that are looking for way to expand the availability of fresh, locally-grown produce in Illinois will be sharing $550,000.
In a news release, the Illinois Department of Agriculture will receive the money through the most recent federal Specialty Crop Grant Program.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — The state of Illinois is urging farmers and others who use or produce pesticides and other agrichemicals to save the containers to be recycled.
The Department of Agriculture says it plans to collect the containers in July and August. They will be recycled to make products such as fence posts, shipping pallets and plastic lumber.
State agriculture director Raymond Poe says it's an opportunity for people to "demonstrate their environmental stewardship" in a convenient way.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — The Illinois State Fair has a new logo and a new theme.
Illinois State Department of Agriculture Director Raymond Poe and State Fair Manager Kevin Gordon revealed the new logo in a press release. The logo features the word 'Illinois' in black letters, the words 'State Fair' in bright red letters and a 2017 blue ribbon above the words of the theme: Generations of Fun!
Illinois State Fair Coliseum closes temporarily for repairs
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Illinois Department of Agriculture officials say they're temporarily closing the Coliseum at the state fairgrounds after engineers discovered structural deficiencies indoors.
