Mark Coyle was announced as the University of Minnesotas athletic director on May 11, 2016. The introduction was highlighted by University President Eric Kaler ripping the state of the mens basketball program, which had suspensions for off-court behavior and the worst record (8-23) in 120 years on the court.
Approaching two years later, theres some surprise that among the highest-profile coaches, only the mens basketball coach Richard Pitino has survived.

MADISON, WIS. There hasnt been much to celebrate for Minnesota and Wisconsin basketball this season.
Both programs went from the upper echelon in the Big Ten last season to the bottom of the league standings this season.
But a Border Battle rivalry win still means something no matter their records.
The Gophers got close to their first victory in Madison since 2009, but the Badgers forced overtime before escaping with a 73-63 win Monday at the Kohl Center.
Tom Izzo says he hopes Gophers fans continue to stick with Richard Pitino, because he doesnt know any basketball program in the country that could sustain the loss of as many players as Pitino has and remain competitive.

No. 2 MSU tops Minnesota 87-57 with 27 points from Jackson
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — With smooth moves, a sharp jump shot and an unavoidable 6-foot-11 presence on the floor, Jaren Jackson Jr. has given Michigan State another vast skillset as the lone freshman in an otherwise-all-sophomore starting lineup.
This performance was his best yet.
Jackson scored a career-high 27 points on 10-for-14 shooting in just 22 minutes for the second-ranked Spartans, who cruised to their ninth consecutive victory by beating Minnesota 87-57 on Tuesday.
Richard Pitino was dealing with his own adversity with the Gophers mens basketball program when he decided to reach out to show support for another Big Ten coach going through a tough time, Tom Izzo.
Michigan States Hall of Fame coach was under heavy scrutiny in late January when an ESPN Outside the Lines report mentioned his program, along with the Spartans football team, had alleged sexual assault incidents involving players years ago ignored by university officials.

MINNEAPOLIS — Nebraska saw a 15-point first-half lead vanish in the second half Tuesday night. But with an assist from Minnesota coach Richard Pitino, the Huskers hung on for a 91-85 victory.
The conference road win was the fourth of the season for NU (18-8, 9-4). You have to go back 19 years to find that many.
“That was our fourth Big Ten road win. There’s been one team all-time left out of the NCAA with that, so that’s a great indicator,’’ coach Tim Miles said on his postgame radio show.
MINNEAPOLIS — It wasn’t looking good.
James Palmer was on the bench with four fouls. Minnesota had rallied from a 15-point hole to tie the game at 62 with about nine minutes still to play in a building that has been more than unkind to Nebraska basketball since the Huskers joined the Big Ten.
Then, on a seemingly innocuous play, Minnesota coach Richard Pitino blew his top and earned a technical foul.
It was the spark for what turned out to be a game-deciding 8-0 run that took all of 61 seconds.
