NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Dylan Windler scored 25 points with a career-tying seven 3-pointers and Belmont defeated Tennessee Tech 92-74 on Saturday night.
The game between the crosstown rivals matched TSU first-year coach Brian "Penny" Collins against his former head coach, Rick Byrd, for the first time. Collins was a point guard at Belmont from 2002-06, helping lead the Bruins to their first NCAA appearance in his senior year.

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) — The Belmont Bruins are the preseason favorite for a third straight year to win the Ohio Valley Conference title in a vote by the league's coaches and sports information directors.
Belmont, winner of four of the past five OVC regular season championships, earned 18 of 24 first-place votes in balloting released Tuesday. The Bruins received 235 total points ahead of Jacksonville State, the defending OVC tournament champs, with 213 points and three first-place votes.

Former Knoxville Journal sports editor Ben Byrd dies at 91
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Ben Byrd, a former Knoxville sportswriter and editor who was inducted into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame, has died. He was 91.
Jeff Berry, a manager at the Berry Funeral Home, confirmed Tuesday that Byrd died Monday at the Ben Atchley Tennessee State Veterans' Home in Knoxville.
Byrd worked at the Knoxville Journal from 1947 until its closing in 1991 as a sports reporter and sports editor. He was named Tennessee sportswriter of the year five times.
