5 ejected in Tigers-Phillies game as 3 batters hit
CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) — Three pitchers were ejected along with Philadelphia manager Gabe Kapler and bench coach Rob Thomson as three batters were hit by pitches during the Phillies' 6-2 exhibition loss to Detroit on Thursday.
Detroit starter Matthew Boyd and Philadelphia relievers Parker Frazier and Pedro Beato also were tossed by plate umpire Tom Hallion.
Boyd was ejected in the fifth inning following a two-pitch sequence to Odubel Herrera.
Marcus Thames promoted to Yankees hitting coach
NEW YORK (AP) — Marcus Thames was promoted to hitting coach by the New York Yankees, replacing Alan Cockrell on the staff of new manager Aaron Boone.
Thames spent the past two seasons as assistant coach under Cockrell, who served as assistant to Jeff Pentland in 2015 and replaced him after that season.
P.J. Pilittere will be Thames' assist after serving as hitting coach at Double-A Trenton in 2016 and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre last year, the Yankees said Monday.
Phillies hire Rob Thomson as bench coach
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Philadelphia Phillies have hired Rob Thomson as bench coach.
Thomson spent the last 10 seasons with the New York Yankees as bench coach (2008; 2015-17) and third base coach (2009-14). The move was announced Tuesday.
The 54-year-old Thomson served 28 seasons with the Yankees as a minor league coach, manager, field coordinator, director of player development and vice president of minor league development.

NEW YORK (AP) — The Yankees have picked ESPN broadcaster Aaron Boone to succeed Joe Girardi as manager, a person familiar with New York's decision told The Associated Press.
The person spoke on condition of anonymity Friday night because the decision had not been announced by the team.
Former U.S. national team goalkeeper Brad Friedel is the new head coach of the New England Revolution.
The 46-year-old Friedel most recently served as head coach of the U.S. under-19 national team. The appointment was announced on Thursday.
Friedel made 82 appearances for the United States over 13 years and was on the national team's roster for three World Cups, including the American team that advanced to the quarterfinals in 2002.
Yankees bench coach Rob Thomson 1st to interview for manager
NEW YORK (AP) — Longtime Yankees coach Rob Thomson emphasized his ability to speak with players as he became the first person to audition for the New York manager job that opened when Joe Girardi was jettisoned last month.
A 54-year-old Canadian who has been with the Yankees for 28 seasons, Thomson spent a decade as a coach under Girardi. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman cited "connectivity" with players as the reason to part with Girardi.
