RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — A North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles employee says she and others shouldn't be forced to choose between work and family if DMV headquarters moves from Raleigh to Rocky Mount.
Nicole Hunter spoke Tuesday at a House committee examining plans to relocate the headquarters and potentially 400 positions. A law ordered DMV to leave its aging property in 2020 and seek leased property elsewhere. Rocky Mount space was the lowest bid. The Council of State still must finalize it.
Woman accused of making false claims for disaster relief
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — A North Carolina woman is accused by federal prosecutors of making fraudulent claims to secure disaster relief funds.
The U.S. Department of Justice announced in a news release Wednesday that 50-year-old Sheila Ruffin of Rocky Mount is charged with 15 counts of disaster fraud related to Hurricane Matthew recovery efforts.

Ship’s engine accident burns 2, prompts Coast Guard airlift
ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. (AP) — The U.S. Coast Guard has flown two crew members from a cruise ship after they suffered burns during an accident in the engine room.

Police: Mother, child electrocuted at North Carolina motel
ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. (AP) — Police in North Carolina say a mother and her 9-year-old daughter have been electrocuted after a heating and air-conditioning unit at a motel apparently sent a jolt of electricity through their bodies as they attempted to exit the room.
Rocky Mount police Cpl. Brad Summerlin says Kendra Pittman and her daughter died Monday. Investigators say Pittman and her three children lived at Economy Inn Hotel and Suites.
North Carolina father charged with murder in toddler’s death
ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. (AP) — A North Carolina father has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of his 2-year-old son.
News outlets reported Tuesday that 23-year-old Kahlid Mohammed Whitehead was arrested and charged this week. A Rocky Mount Police Department release says officers responded to a report of a deceased person Sunday morning. It says they found the toddler dead at the scene.

Rocky Mount police told media outlets 21-year-old KaShard Raheem Howell of Nashville was stopped Wednesday by officers and Nash County sheriff's deputies. Howell was wanted for probation violations.

KINSTON, N.C. (AP) — A North Carolina family announced Tuesday it has reached a settlement in a lawsuit involving a near-drowning almost four years ago.
News outlets report the family of Jaekwon Williams announced at the Lenoir County Courthouse that a Superior Court judge approved a settlement in a lawsuit brought against the city of Kinston, a local water park and the city of Rocky Mount.
Officials said insurance carriers for Kinston paid $10 million, and more than $2.6 million for Rocky Mount.
Police said Wednesday that a Rocky Mount child who had been missing since Sunday has been found safe, but his mother remains missing.
Etionne Dubraye Joyner, 16, was last seen Sunday at Greater Joy Missionary Baptist Church, at 820 Nashville Road, police said. She left the service with her son, Ja'Kari.
Police didn't disclose how or where they found Ja'Kari.
Police said Tuesday they are searching for a Rocky Mount woman and her young son.

Edgecombe County Sheriff Clee Atkinson told news outlets the Tar River Regional Drug Task Force executed a search warrant on a Rocky Mount home Tuesday, seizing 520 bags of heroin, nearly $14,000 cash, three handguns and crack cocaine. Atkinson said the men arrested are part of the Sex Money Murder street gang, a subset of the Bloods.

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. (AP) — Police in North Carolina say they were able to get mental help for a student who threatened to bring a BB gun to a high school so a police officer would kill him.
Edgecombe County Sheriff's Detective E. W. Muse Jr. says the teen posted on Facebook earlier this month he wanted the officer at SouthWest Edgecombe High School to kill him.
Escaped inmate from North Carolina prison recaptured
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Authorities say a minimum custody inmate at a North Carolina prison has been recaptured.
A news release from the N.C. Department of Public Safety says 24-year-old Clayton Campbell was captured without incident in Rocky Mount just after midnight on Friday.
Officials say Campbell escaped from an outside work assignment at the Caledonia unit on Thursday.
North Carolina Sen. Bryant not seeking re-election this year
ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. (AP) — A Democratic state senator known for vocal opposition to Republican policies at the North Carolina legislature won't seek re-election this year because of redistricting.
Sen. Angela Bryant of Rocky Mount announced her decision Monday as candidate filing opened. Bryant joined the General Assembly in 2007, serving six years in the House before going to the Senate.
2 officers eating lunch at mall foil $20,000 jewelry theft
JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) — Authorities say a North Carolina man who tried to run off with $20,000 worth of jewelry from a New Jersey mall store was captured by two police officers who happened to be eating lunch nearby.
Police say 19-year-old Shawn Nelson, of Rocky Mount, was trying on jewelry at the Newport Centre mall in Jersey City on Tuesday when he ran off with chains still around his neck.
North Carolina woman charged in crash that killed man
ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. (AP) — The North Carolina Highway Patrol has charged a woman in the death of a man after a traffic accident.
WITN-TV in Greenville reports the patrol said 43-year-old Leila Faranesh of Greenville is charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle in a wreck on U.S. 264 east of Bailey on Thursday.
According to troopers, the car Faranesh was driving ran off the road before it side-swiped another vehicle, which overturned and killed 46-year-old Ricky Stewart of Holly Springs.
Deputies: Store worker shoots at fleeing armed robber
ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. (AP) — Sheriff's deputies in North Carolina say an employee at a store pulled out a gun and fired shots at a gunman as he fled.
WITN-TV in Greenville reports Nash County sheriff's deputies say the Nashville store was held up late Monday night by a person who demanded money from the cash register.

11:40 p.m.: A car slid off Interstate 95 in Halifax County and into an embankment. Crews were responding and authorities did not say if anybody was injured.
11:30 p.m.: WRAL Chief Meteorologist Greg Fishel says light snow could still be falling in the eastern part of Wake County as the system moves out, but measurable snow could still be falling hard in places like Rocky Mount and Goldsboro until about 3 a.m.
Police: Man killed in domestic violence shooting
ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. (AP) — Police say the killing of a 40-year-old man in North Carolina was an act of domestic violence.
Rocky Mount Police said they were called to a home around 3:45 a.m. Friday and found Toby Harrison shot to death.
Authorities released few details beyond blaming domestic violence for the killing.

A Chinese tire manufacturer plans to open its first U.S. plants in Edgecombe County, creating 800 jobs, officials said Tuesday.
Triangle Tyre Co. Ltd. plans to invest nearly $580 million in the plants, which will be built on the so-called Kingsboro mega-site, a 1,500-acre assemblage off U.S. Highway 64 east of Rocky Mount. North Carolina created four mega-sites in recent years in an effort to bring large manufacturing operations to the state.
Rocky Mount police cancel Silver Alert for 39-year-old man
The North Carolina Center for Missing Persons on Thursday canceled a Silver Alert for a missing 39-year-old man.
Officials said Brian Desmond Blackmon, 39, was missing and endangered. He is believed to be suffering from dementia or some other cognitive impairment, according to the center.?
A Rocky Mount couple was arrested Tuesday night on charges of armed robbery and kidnapping in connection with a robbery last week at Swift’s Fine Jewelry in Knightdale.
A tearful employee told a 911 operator that a man and a woman held guns to the heads of employees at the store, at 210 Hinton Oaks Blvd., and forced them to lay on the floor.
The robbery was reported by the store's security service in a call to 911 when the store alarm was activated, just before 2 p.m. on Dec. 8.
Edgecombe County economic development heats up with over 900 new jobs planned
Edgecombe County is about to get an economic shot in the arm with announcements over the next several days of new jobs coming to the struggling county.
Gov. Roy Cooper is scheduled to visit Edgecombe twice in a week to share news about the nearly 1,000 new jobs for a county that has the second highest unemployment rate in the state and has experienced an exodus of residents in recent years.
About six hours after it was issued, the N.C. Center for Missing Persons canceled a Silver Alert Monday for a Rocky Mount man. George Michael Butts, 60, is white with long, white hair and blue eyes. He is about 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighs 140 pounds.
Butts was reported missing Monday from 730 Marigold St. in Rocky Mount.
Authorities said eh was found safe Monday evening, but did not release additional details.
Knightdale police on Monday released the names of two people wanted in a jewelry store robbery in hopes that the public can help track them down.
Jaquin Jamal Pratt, 18, and Nikita Shontel Taylor, 25, both of Rocky Mount, are wanted on charges of armed robbery and kidnapping.
Knightdale Police said information from witnesses helped them identify the suspects, and they hope the public will aid in locating them.
The murder of Magelene Puckett is one of Rocky Mount's oldest and most puzzling crimes. She was beaten to death in July of 1990 during a robbery at her mother's home.
Police say the suspects came in through the kitchen window, likely intending to rob the home.
Puckett, 63, was sexually assaulted, beaten and left for dead. Her mother, 81-year-old Aggie Roberson, was also beaten, but managed to get out of the house and summon help from neighbors.
Worker dies after being hit by bulldozer in North Carolina
ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. (AP) — A worker at a North Carolina landfill site has died after being hit by a bulldozer.
WITN-TV in Greenville reports the state Department of Labor says it has opened an investigation into the death of 48-year-old Gary Sigmon of Denver in Lincoln County. The department said Sigmon was employed by Earnhardt Grading of Stanley.
Rocky Mount Police Chief James Moore notified the city manager on Tuesday that he plans to retire effective Jan. 1. Moore has been with the Rocky Mount Police Department since January 2012.
Moore leaves having overseen a five-year decline in the overall crime rate in the city, the longest continuous drop on<br /> record.
Before Rocky Mount, Moore served as deputy police chief in Wilmington, N.C.

Proposed railroad cargo hub in eastern N Carolina uncertain
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — A planned CSX Corp. cargo hub for eastern North Carolina could be in jeopardy but Gov. Roy Cooper says he'll keep pressing the railroad to invest and create jobs there.
CSX announced last year a $160 million investment in the terminal near Rocky Mount to move railroad cars to delivery trucks. About 150 new jobs were expected, but state officials predicted many more.
The Rocky Mount Police Department issued a Silver Alert early Wednesday morning for an 88-year-old man who is believed to be suffering from dementia or other cognitive impairment.
Estee L. Lawrence was last seen at 104 Windmere Ct., Rocky Mount, according to police. He was wearing a blue jacket, white shirt, blue jeans and brown shoes.
Lawrence is described as a black man with gray hair and brown eyes. He is 5-foot-6 and weighs 154 pounds.
