RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Carolina Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour says injured goalie Scott Darling will miss a few weeks, resulting in Curtis McElhinney being claimed off waivers from Toronto.
General manager Don Waddell announced the waiver claim for McElhinney on Tuesday. Darling hurt his hamstring in the preseason finale against Nashville.
The 35-year-old McElhinney went 11-5-1 in 18 games for Toronto with a 2.15 goals-against average.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — The Carolina Hurricanes were working on their power play during practice when first-year coach Rod Brind'Amour pulled first-round draft pick Andrei Svechnikov aside for some quick one-on-one instruction.
"Andrei," the coach said, "be a shooter."
The Hurricanes likely will need plenty of shots — and goals — from Svechnikov and fellow first-round draft pick Martin Necas if they're to finally snap the NHL's longest active playoff drought.
Carolina picks Williams as captain; Rask has finger surgery
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — The Carolina Hurricanes picked forward Justin Williams as their captain and said center Victor Rask had surgery on two fingers he injured while slicing food in his kitchen.
Team officials made the announcements Thursday when the team opened training camp.
General manager Don Waddell says Rask will be out indefinitely after having the procedure on the fourth and fifth fingers on his right hand.
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — The Carolina Hurricanes say Steve Smith has resigned as assistant coach.
The team announced Smith's resignation Monday. The 55-year-old smith had spent four seasons with the Hurricanes as an assistant coach under Bill Peters, who resigned after the season to become Calgary's head coach. Smith was responsible for the team's defensemen and penalty kill.
Former Hurricanes captain Rod Brind'Amour replaced Peters as head coach.

General manager Don Waddell announced the hiring of Daniels on Monday and completed the staff for new coach Rod Brind'Amour.
The 49-year-old Daniels was an assistant with the team from 2003-08, was part of the staff that won the Stanley Cup in 2006 and has been the organization's manager of pro scouting since 2015.
