Northern Illinois hires former star RB Hammock as coach
DEKALB, Ill. (AP) — Northern Illinois has hired former star running back Thomas Hammock as its head coach.
Hammock is taking over at his alma mater after spending 16 seasons as a college and NFL assistant — the past five as the Baltimore Ravens' running backs coach. With the hiring announced Friday, he becomes the first African-American head football coach at NIU.
Carey introduced as Temple coach, a place he “wants to be”
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Temple University athletic director Patrick Kraft smiled and let out a little laugh when he took the podium to introduce the school's newest head coach, Rod Carey.
"I feel like Bill Murray in 'Groundhog Day,'" Kraft said Friday.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Temple has hired Northern Illinois coach Rod Carey as its next football coach, filling a vacancy that abruptly opened in late December after the newly-hired Manny Diaz left to lead Miami.
Temple officials said Friday that they planned to introduce Carey at a news conference. Athletic director Patrick Kraft says Carey is a proven winner and the right fit to keep the Owls moving forward.
DETROIT (AP) — Northern Illinois is hoping to re-establish its recent run of Mid-American Conference dominance with a return to the Motor City in November.

NIU to mark 10th anniversary of deadly campus shooting
DEKALB, Ill. (AP) — Hundreds of people gathered at a memorial garden at Northern Illinois University to mark the tenth anniversary of a shooting that left five students dead.
The garden in DeKalb features memorial stones for victims Gayle Dubowski, Catalina Garcia, Julianna Gehant, Ryanne Mace and Daniel Parmenter. Seventeen others were injured in the gunfire on Feb. 14, 2008 before the shooter took his own life.
Duke squares off against Northern Illinois in Quick Lane Bowl
Duke wants to be a regular postseason participant, so that's why winning the last two games of the regular season to qualify for a bowl was so vital to the Blue Devils.
Duke takes on Northern Illinois, which also missed the postseason last year, in Tuesday's Quick Lane Bowl at Detroit's Ford Field.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — San Diego State running back Rashaad Penny says he received an apology Monday from the Northern Illinois player who gouged his right eye during the No. 19 Aztecs' 34-28 victory Saturday night.
Penny said he spoke with both NIU linebacker Antonio Jones-Davis and coach Rod Carey. TV cameras picked up Jones-Davis sticking his fingers into Penny's facemask while he was at the bottom of the pile after a kickoff return.
