Chiefs assistant Thomas retires after 5 decades in NFL
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Emmitt Thomas announced his retirement Tuesday as the defensive backs coach of the Kansas City Chiefs, ending an NFL career that began as a Hall of Fame player and wound up spanning five decades.
When longtime coordinators move from one defense to another, it's noteworthy.
There were several such transfers for this season, including former head coaches Romeo Crennel, back to Houston, and Mike Pettine, now in Green Bay. Dean Pees, as successful as nearly any assistant coach over the past two decades, landed in Tennessee.
Here are six intriguing new defensive coordinators:
Watson’s emergence helps ease loss of Watt for Texans
HOUSTON (AP) — Without J.J. Watt for the second straight season, a new star has emerged for the Houston Texans. Rookie Deshaun Watson has this team long known for its defense rolling on offense.
Though the Texans are 3-3 entering their bye, the development of Watson has them encouraged that they've finally found the player to end their years of quarterback woes and help the franchise take the next step.
Vrabel a hit in 1st year in charge of Texans defense
WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. (AP) — Mike Vrabel isn't making any drastic changes in his first season as the Houston Texans' defensive coordinator.
After what the unit did last year he knows that isn't necessary. The defense was the strength of the team in 2016 and finished the season allowing the fewest yards per game in the league despite defensive end J.J. Watt missing all but three games because of back surgery.
Texans add Welker to coaching staff
HOUSTON (AP) — The Houston Texans have added Wes Welker to their coaching staff as an offense and special teams assistant.
Welker wrapped up a 12-year playing career in 2015. He had 9,924 yards receiving and scored 50 touchdowns playing for five teams, including spending six seasons with the New England Patriots.
